Pioneer DV-220V-K HDMI 1080p Upscaling DVD Player

Pioneer DV-220V-K HDMI 1080p Upscaling DVD Player
  • HDMI 1080p Upscaling
  • USB Input for Compressed Music Playback
  • CD-to-MP3 ripping to a compatible USB Recording Device
  • Advanced Graphical User Interface
  • Ultra-compact Design - 14-3/16" (360mm) Wide

This player is really small, so it might not stack well with your other components.

The converted picture to 1080p is really amazing! (I don't feel like I need to get a Blue-Ray player...)

One small complain: to change mode from 4:3 to 16:9 you need to stop watching, go into the setup menu and do it.

It would be nice to have a button on the remote to do this.

(We just finished watching a DVD that had been recorded in 4:3, so it looked squished on our HD TV until we figured out how to change that aspect ratio...)

The DV-220V-K is a great little machine in most respects. For simple commercial DVD's the HDMI upscale sound and picture quality are impressive, as good as my HD satelite reception which, in my humble opinion, is excellent. Menu options for tweaking sound and picture are adequate and the size of the machine (14" wide vs 17" wide for most DVD players) is appreciated. I have two complaints. As stated in another review, I wish the player had more picture size options. It offers 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios in the initial setup and two zoom levels, both adequate for inspecting Johnny Depp's nasal hair but not much else. I hate the letterbox effect and I would really like an incremental zoom control of some kind on the remote. I can't compensate with my TV controls because my TV will stretch but it won't zoom. My second complaint is the skimpy operating manual. It tells you almost nothing about what effect the various menu contols will have so trial and error are the order of the day (be sure to set the picture resolution to the highest your TV can handle). In conclusion, I have to say that this player is far better in almost every respect than my previous purchase which was a Samsung F-1080 (big disappointment) and the price is better than right.

Finally I can play an avi file without having to burn it! This DVD player rocks!!!

Just received this yesterday, 03/10/10, and it has played avi files on DVD-R and a flash drive. I will update in a few weeks. But so far so good. Picture with HDMI upconversion with a store bought DVD is near Blu-ray. The picture with a DVD-R with a burned movie on it is decent quality.

Over a month later, and it continues to be an awesome DVD player. Knock on wood! Seriously thinking of ordering another one for the bedroom.
