I have two dash cams. One for filming the front view and the other pointing back. I have been hit in the back about every other year in seems. So now I will have film for any wreck I might be in.

So I bought this "pro" CD unit because it has SPDIF (coax) digital outputs which would work well with my digital board. Digital connection is clean, you don't worry about levels, it cuts down on cable clutter, it leaves my analog inputs open for other things, etc. I was borderline on the iPod feature but thought that for $30 more, it'd be handy to have.

Was VERY surprised to find out that the iPod dock does NOT WORK thru the digital outputs! So I have to either resort to using the analog outs for everything, which is NOT what I bought a "pro" CD player for, or I have to have an extra pair of channels available just to play the iPod. If I wanted to do that, it would be MUCH simpler just to connect an 1/8" to 1/4" or RCA cable straight from my iPod to the board.

I'm thinking I will return this product as this is clearly unacceptable.

Nice unit, but be aware that the Ipod dock does not work with the digital audio out connections. The Ipod and Aux only work with analog out. So, if you were hoping to get digital signal to your fancy DAC from your Ipod it's not going to happen with this unit.

We were living with a 300 cd juke box that a professional company had installed about 10 years ago. Found I was enjoying listening to my iPod more. More current selections and just the songs I like from the albums in the juke box. So I wanted to be able to listen to iPod through our stereo system but not get rid of capability of playing a CD once in a while. This device fit the bill. The analog output was no big deal for me as in other reviews. That was how my juke box was wired anyway. My only complaint is that the iPod tray requires an Apple universal dock adapter. Think they could have included that with price or at least warned me that I needed one so I would have ordered with player.But other than that, I love it

I was looking for an iPod docking station, and I came upon this Tascam deck, which has the docking station, but also allows you to play CD's! This definitely fills the bill for my purposes.

I bought an SKB 2U hard case for it, so I can take it on the road with me. I plug it into some JBL 210P speakers, and let the party begin!

We use this on our church sound system. We use an iPod for all of our background music. It works great and controls the iPod well. My only complant is the inability to enter CD track numbers on the face of the player. Unfortunately you have to use the remote to do it. Other than that we are satisfied with this player.

I am very happy with this mp3 player. This is my first real mp3 player, and I decided videos and pictures weren't something I needed or wanted, so I first considered an iPod Shuffle. After my brother reminded me that with iPod comes the mandatory iTunes, however, I decided to look for another brand. I decided to go with Philips because I've had many good experiences with their products in the past.

The player itself is very nice, like the other reviewer said, being made of metal is great and it feels very durable. It's very easy to use and has the features I wanted. You can shuffle and repeat songs and all that good stuff. Adding music is really simple, just drag and drop. The sound quality is really good. The battery life is great. You just plug in into your computer to charge it and it doesn't take long at all. I've never had it go completely dead thus far.

The earphones are great. This was the main reason I chose this model over the red, 4 GB version that comes with regular earphones. I guess I have small ears because I always have problems with earbuds hurting my ears and falling out. Because of the little wrap around piece on these however, it is easy to get this pair to stay, and stay comfortably. I wear this when I clean my house and even when I look under my couch, turning my head almost completely upside down, these still don't fall out.

I also love the little case it comes with. I didn't really think I'd use this when I bought it, but I was wrong. This consists of two pieces, a stretchy arm band, and then a very snug case for the player itself. It makes the player feel very protected and has a velcro loop thing that you can attach to the arm band or a belt loop (much more convenient than putting the player in your pocket, which is what I thought I'd do). There is also a little loop at the very top which I guess could be used to attach it to a keychain or something similar.

All in all I would definitely buy this again, in fact my mother is thinking about getting one for herself.

This MP3 player is an excellent alternative to Apple's iPod Shuffle. The Philips player has more features, like an FM radio and voice recording, and is very well built with a mostly metal case.

Unlike some other small, inexpensive MP3 players that are cheaply built, this player feels solid and of good quality. I purchased this for exercising to replace a Sandisk player whose headphone jack failed after only 3 months. The Philips player feels solidly built.

I considered the Shuffle, but the Philips is also really small and has more features for less money including a handy case. As a second player that's extremely small and lightweight, I'd recommend the Philips GoGear SA1929 near the top of the list compared to alternatives.

I bought this mainly to listen to when I work out. I am very happy with the product! the sound quality is great and it comes with head phones, a carrying case, and arm band. It is very simple to operate and holds a charge for a long time. The head phones also stay in securely, they don't fall out. I highly reccomend this product to anyone in need of a nice user friendly MP3 player.

This mp3 player is the best I have owned, including a ipod. The best feature is the FM setting. If you get tried of listen to your music or just want to hear the news it is nice to have that option.

Purchased this on August 12, 2009 it died on December 29. Completely dead and useless. To add insult to injury the "warranty" ended in November. $10 a month for an MP3 player is no bargain.

Sony Portable Mini-Disc Player/Recorder (MZ-G750DPC)

Minidisc continues to be the Rodney Dangerfield of recording media, i.e., it "don't get no respect." This is too bad; after all, minidiscs are small, exhibit terrific sound fidelity (it's unlikely that the average person can distinguish an MD recording from one made on a CD), and now can be stretched to record as much as five hours of material on a single disc. The newest recorder/players are so tiny they can fit easily into a shirt pocket. Minidiscs can be used to record music from cd's or MP3's, or can be used with a microphone to record lectures and conversations.

Incredible! Yet this amazing technology continues to languish as an afterthought within the U.S. electronics market as a whole, largely because of the domination of the commercial market by cd's and the existence of alternative types of players for MP3's (e.g., Cd/MP3 players and single-use MP3 players). Because people (including me) generally buy their music in the form of commercial cd's, using minidiscs requires some additional laborious steps that apparently discourage most people. You have to obtain a cd player with an "optical out", you have to use an optical connector (one is included with this Sony unit, by the way) to deliver the music from the cd to the md player, and if you want to be able to keep track of what's what on your md's, you have to devise a system for labeling your md's (this is actually kind of a fun activity, but I can see how some people might consider it simply "more work").

This is all too bad, since minidisc units like the MZ-G750DPC are amazing little pieces of technology that are fun to use and amazingly versatile. This is my second MD player, my first being a previous Sony model, the MZ-R55. This older unit was fine in most ways, but had one annoying flaw in that its battery capacity was a mere three hours or so unless one attached an external AA battery holder. And besides, it required an expensive Ni-MH "gumpack" rechargable battery. Newer units like the MZ-G750DPC, however, can play for six hours or more using a single rechargeable AA battery (these are cheap and easy to find), and will perform far longer using an ordinary AA alkaline battery.

Other improvements include the advent of the new MDLP technology, whereby the recording time of a minidisc can be either doubled or quadrupled. At 2x, there is virtually no discernable falloff in audio quality, but I would recommend the 4x setting only for the recording of voices and other non-music sources. This unit also comes with a small device for downloading music in MP3 form from the Internet. In light of the struggles that Sony, Sharp, and other md manufacturers have experienced in promoting minidisc in this country (it is far more popular in Japan and Europe), the industry has been actively promoting the concept of md as a device for storing and playing MP3 files.

The reason I bought this particular unit is that it comes with a remote control unit that includes an am/fm tuner of reasonably high quality. This renders the MZ-G750DPC even more versatile, a virtual all-in-one portable audio entertainment center.

The only reservation I would express about the unit is that because of its very versatility, it can be complicated to use. There are a LOT of commands and options, and so a purchaser had better not lose the instruction manual! Fortunately, the manual is decently written and illustrated.

Let's see: it has "G protection" so that it will skip only if you are running really, really fast; it has the capacity to allow users to insert introductory scrolling text onto their recordings (this is indeed laborious, but it can be done); it allows the insertion of track marks onto recordings that arrive as one long track (useful for dj mix sets or many Internet concert broadcasts); it comes with an AC adapter both for plug-in play and for recharging the battery-and it is very, very cool-looking, to boot.

All in all, this is a unit that should appeal to all music lover/gadgeteers. I think it's terrific.

I have just recently purchased this product and it is absolutely one of the best electronic investments I have ever made. It is light weight, easy to use, stylish, convenient, and has wonderful sound quality for a small minidisc player. In my opinion, this product was worth every penny! With this little device, you can record up to 4 CDs onto one minidisc! It also provides you with the Mega Bass system to enrich the sound quality. Plus it has Skip-Free G protection which is nice. The package includes a Digital PC link cable, a rechargable battery, a USB cable, an AC adapter, and a Digital Connecting cable. One of the advantages to having a portable minidisc player instead of an MP3 player, is that you can continue to make more and more MDs without having to worry obout the memory, where as with the MP3 player, you have to worry about how much memoryyou have taken up on the unit. What I like about this device, is that you can also access the radio with the small yet practical remote control and also edit. It also gives you 24 hours of playback with one Sony AA battery! Oh and did I mention that this little thing weighs only 4.2 ounces without the battery? One thing that did dissapoint me however was the fact that the LCD display on the unit as well as the LCD display on the remote control was not backlit. But overall this little life saver is an EXCEPTIONAL piece of equipment and is very reliable I might add. Hope this review was of help to you!

I've been putting off buying a portable listening device since my last '90 Aiwa tape player. But after seeing the Minidisc in action it's a definite buy and constant use gem.

Sound quality? Can you say OPTICAL input. You cannot get any better sound resolution than this; any decent DVD player has an optical out; decent CD players too. RCA IN is a plus (not included) and the PC IN option is mediocre it is convenient with all the CD-R/PC/MP3 formatted music. It's got a two-stage added-bass feature that works quite well. The standard headphones are excellent an updated version with position detents for fixed fit. The remote fob device is essential for total playback+record control once your MDplayer is tucked away in the pocket. (look for the RM-MZR55 remote with backlighting if you want to upgrade)

The unit has never skipped even with major motion, jostling, or shock. I haven't done a drop-test, but I'll skip it for now. The biggest drawback is the lack of a custom case/holster for the unit; it does come with a bag, but it isn't adequate for protection or carrying with any confidence. Plus, the lack of backlighting on the main unit is a bummer.

It comes with it's own AA ni-cad battery and charger, and runs for a prolonged period of time ~ 6 hours playback, 1.5-2x as long on a regular AA. The half-sized ice cream sandwich form kicks the CD portable players to the curb. It isn't as ubiquitous as some MP3 players but why would you want to drop several dimes on something invisible. Personally, the anodized blue colored one has more impact than the silver, but the form and interface overall is a delight. The battery bulge just slightly cants the display up, the button separation and placement works great for easy access. I find excuses to block the world out and listen to high-fidelity music on the go.

Sony makes great products and this is one of them. I like their minidisc player because of its's small size and mine came with a free armband (carry case) so it's super easy for me to take it along while running or just working out (if you're looking for a non-skip workout player; this is it; mine hasn't skipped yet and I run, jump, and practice martial arts while I have it on). The pc connection makes it simple to burn a song onto the minidisc but it burns in "real time" so it can take a while... but if you have something like a windows media player on your pc you can copy any of your favorite songs from different cds or from the internet on a playlist [the minidisc's discs work just like a cd-rw so you can add and delete songs on them (and they come in neat colors)] and while your computer plays them back to you, the minidisc can be recording them. For anyone shopping for a minidisc~ you may want to opt for one of Sony's cheaper models; they have much better color options (this model only comes in silver unless they updated it) and you probably won't be using the radio much anyway unless you're a real radio buff, lit screens and lit remotes are nice too; I would tell you how nice but the model I bought didn't come with this option; also, being able to label your songs is nice and all but it takes a while so unless you REALLY want your songs labeled, don't make that a consideration. I'd rather have a cheaper lit model than one with song labeling capability & a radio but of course, that's just my personal preference. Last but not least, the rechargable battery is GREAT, I love not having to buy new batteries every month; when the batteries get low (I think they last about 4 hours or so??) just plug the minidisc into the wall and press charge; after it's fully charged it will shut off by itself or if you're at home, just listen with the unit plugged into the wall intead of using the batteries =) I haven't had and problems with the batteries draining unless I hit the play button up against something with the "hold" not on [this model when I bought it came with a battery case too so if it wasn't in use I could always remove the battery so it wouldn't turn on by mistake (and drain the batteries)]. If you're in the market for a portable minidisc player don't forget to shop around and keep an eye out for in store and online sales~ sometimes you can save a lot ^_^ Good Luck at finding a good deal and Xiexie (Thanks) for taking the time to read my review ^_^

Buying this MD was one of the smartest thing I did, for several reasons. One because it's price is really good, also it comes with a great bundle (PC link...) also it has an FM/AM radio if you get tired of listening to your recorded minidisc, also it records with great sound and with the Lp2, Lp4 and Mono mode you save battery life and you have much more time to record songs.

Vulkano 010410VK All-In-One 8 GB Media Placeshifter, Black

I preordered my Vulkano direct from Monsoon, after a few delays I received it August 23rd. The first day I hooked it up to my TV via Composite connections and couldnt get a picture. I called tech support and they said that Composite is not enabled right now and would be in a later firmware release.

I then used a networked PC to set it up given that the TV setup wouldnt work. Within a few hour's of trying it out I now have this laundry list of issue's.

1/ Composite Video out is not enabled and this is the only input available on my TV.

2/ Overscan lines visible on Desktop player.

3/ Cannot stream while recording to the Vulkano's memory.

4/ Audio/Video not in sync on recording's.

5/ Cannot stream to more than one device on local network at same time unlike hava's

6/ EPG sometimes decides to stop recognizing my US Zip code.

The first time I called tech support I was told the new firmware would fix the Composite out issue, a few days later still no firmware update so I called back and asked for an RMA (their policy is that you can return it for ANY reason within 30 days which they kept touting when people would say its unproven.. "try it, and if you dont like it send it back" (paraphrased).

Well I was told I couldnt have an RMA because that had to go to another department (this is after arguing with the tech support that I didnt want it even if there was a firmware fix). I have still not heard from the RMA dept and I get stalled everytime I call and told the RMA people are working on it.....

This review is for those who are thinking of upgrading from Monsoon's older Titanium WiFi product.

I've been using the Monsoon Titanium WiFi for DVR and placeshifting purposes for more than a year now and it was a pretty good product. Overall the Vulkano line is a good upgrade from the Titanium WiFi with the following notes:

** Why you should upgrade:

1. The Vulkano now has an HDMI built-in so you can use it to play back recordings to your 1080p HDTV I was impressed with the playback quality, even though the recordings were done over a composite feed.

2. The Vulkano local streaming works very well the picture quality appears to be much better when viewing on the PC application. I have not tested this on an iPhone or other mobile app but assume it will be pretty good on the smaller screen.

3. The Vulkano setup is pretty much the same process as the Titanium in fact aside from color and font changes the screens and process will look very familiar. The one problem I ran into was setting Port Forwarding to enable place shifting and remote viewing of recorded video. The user guide was helpful in pointing to a website to find the TCP and UDP port numbers and clues to how to manually add these to your WiFi router to make it all work. The Vulkano setup process only tells you it encountered a problem and wasn't much help. See additional notes below on this issue.

4. As other reviewers have indicated the Vulkano like the Titanium does not charge anything extra to support remote viewing. No annual service fees.

5. Over time, my Titanium's video quality degraded as the device warms up. For the first 5-10 mins the remote video and recordings look like the first day I bought it. Then it gets what appears to be snow or horizontal interference dashes. So far the Vulkano is working great will find out how long this lasts.

6. Video capture is the same as the Titanium via composite or component inputs and output.

** Things you should know before buying/upgrading

1. The Titanium allows you to plug any USB memory stick or external disk drive into the device's USB port and it is ready for use for recording no formatting or anything. I used to do recordings on a 2.5" Solid State Disk (SSD) drive and then took it with me on road trips and played the video on my laptop or saved the recording in a media archive. The Vulkano requires any USB device to be formatted to something that a PC will not recognize. This means you have to dedicate a Memory stick/SDMC/Ext Disk to the Vulkano and leave it plugged in. This is the biggest negative aspect of the product really kills making your recordings portable. So I ended up dedicating a 1Tb hard drive for DVR.

2. Here on Amazon and on the Vulkano websites there are 3 models you can buy Platinum (lowest cost); Delux, and Delux Pro. I would recommend buying the Platinum and get a much cheaper USB/SDMC and disk drive from Amazon.com than spending $100+ on the bundled versions.

3. Port Forwarding configuration the old Titanium worked right out of the box and didn't need me to fiddle with my router. What you need to do is find out the UDP (place shifting) and TCP ports the Vulkano is trying to use it will show up during the setup process. If both the default and after enabling UPnP fails you will need to write these port numbers down and log into your WiFi router's administrator application often it is a website at . Look for advance administration and "Port Forwarding". Add the ports the Vulkano is trying to use to the UDP and TCP look up you will also need to know the IP address assigned to the Vulkano device.

4. The Vulkano advertise being able to automatically locate UPnP media devices/PCs on the network to share video and images no indication this actually works. The YouTube widget seems to be the only thing available. I haven't yet found documentation about this and how to get it to work.

Hope this is helpful I'll update when I figure out how to get media sharing working... by the way Monsoon is having a sale on these devices through 1/23/2011.

Overall I really love it and promote it amongst my friends. We used it to stream to a laptop (connected to projector)to watch a baseball game on the patio and it worked great for that purpose.

Everything else I tested (recording on PC or built-in SD, streaming via iPhone using WiFi, watching YouTube) worked fine. Some improvements in regards of usability would be nice, but again it works. And I knew that some of the other features might not be there yet before I bought, but only because i looked into the forum and reviews.

I agree the cables/remote delivered with the product are on the lower end of quality at least from look and feel, but other devices don't even include cables...

Support was responsive/helpful (and friendly ;-) when I sent a questions via email and got back to me within a day.

So why just 3 out of 5 stars:

1 star off for not having all the features they advertise (pictures on TV via UPNP from NAS is not available with the current firmware, Oct 2010, no blackberry support yet,no 3G support for iPhone...)

1 star off for releasing too early and forcing customers to be beta testers for some of the features

Clearly the product has high potential, if monsoon gets the missing features out soon and improves the software a little, I'll be more than happy to chage my review to 5 stars.

After 365 Days of waiting for the product to be released. I Have requested an RMA yesterday.

The Product looks and sounded like the "god box" it has been touted to be. Instead it is a fancy, flat, faux sho' only box.

On your wifi it streams decent video. + for Ipad owners who would want a extra portable TV.

Anyone on 4.0.2 or higher iOS don't bother on wifi the app closes after 20 seconds. If your on 3G despite what the website, reviews, and box says no connection.

This is supposed to be a DVR right? Wrong, you can schedule recordings and they appear to be waiting for you to transfer however they never do transfer, and I suspect they never recorded since my e-sata hard drive free space never changed before and after recording.

All in all I very much wanted this product to work as advertised and chalked up the wait time (originally announced for release same time as ipad) as extra Q&A testing. Not so, The Beta testers were me and everyone else who

pre-ordered through monsoon.

All that said if they actually get working all the things that I and other posted are wrong (they have a great forum from myvulkano dotcom) Then I would purchase again.

I have 2 Slingboxes,the Pro and Pro HD. I loved the Slingboxes but when a problem happens, if it's after the 90 days of support, then it's $30 per call not even per incident. That was so annoying that when I had a problem, I looked for an alternative and found the Vulkano, they have lifetime free support. I found the Vulkano to be frustrating to set up but support was so good and easy to get, I made a good decision to go with Vulkano. Works well to placeshift. I like the Slingbox player interface a little better but I was told down the pipeline they would address some issues I have. I would also like to, like Tivo, pause and reverse live tv, supposedly that too is coming. Like Tivo, Vulkano records well. There is room for more improvement and I believe they will come. The product as it is now is terrific, I love it.

When the dvd player arrived I was really impressed with all of its features: 1. car mount for the headrest, 2. remote control, 3. swivel and 4. car charger.

Major Advantages: 1. extremely functional; 2. battery last for over 2 hours and if the battery runs low, you can always plug it into the the car charger; 3. the screen is large enough to view across the room; 4. you can use the remote from nearly 8 feet away and 5. most of all it works!! :>

Disadvantages: 1. you can not control the volume with the remote and 2. for the price, the material of the dvd player does not appear to be of quality (it feels like plastic).

All in all it is a great product and so far so good. My 2 year old received it for Christmas and he never leaves home without it!

I've tried several portable DVD players and this was the best. It ran smoothly right out of the box, playing older DVD's , newer DVD's, CD-RW disks of music and video files, everything I played in it worked perfectly. The built in screen is clear enough and big enough to display all aspect ratios crisply, the built in stereo speakers are more than adequate to produce the full range of audio, and the unit comes with all the cables you will need for hookup to a stereo receiver and/or to a TV or monitor if you want. I used this unit both ways, as a portable player using its built-in screen and features, and also hooked it up to my 20 inch television and technics stereo. The image was excellent on the television and the sound was very deep and full through the stereo receiver. The remote is very slender and feels a little too light, but it worked as it should as long as I aimed it directly at the front of the unit. I was about eleven feet away and it worked fine. Still, I would treat the remote carefully, don't accidentally sit on it or leave it to get stuck between the sofa cushions. I say this because the buttons on the DVD player itself are a little awkward to use. The are under the built in screen and not positioned very well. The buttons on the unit do work, I've tested them all, and they function as they are supposed to, but it's much easier to control it with the remote, so you want to make sure you don't damage the remote. The built in 360 degree swivel screen is great. It functions well no matter how far you have it turned. Though the screen is large enough to watch comfortably from about ten feet away, you will do better sitting about eight feet or less from it. All in all, I have not been able to find anything negative about this unit, except as I mentioned with regard to the buttons on the unit itself. I highly recommend this portable DVD player.

First let me say the camera only gets any stars one because Amazon doesn't let you zero star items and two because the seller sent my camera in a timely fashion and because my camera came in one piece...but...I don't know how Vivitar has the audacity to price people $40 dollars for this, if I wasn't getting a deal by only paying $18 for this I'd be highly pissed with the fact that I wasted any type of money with this camera! This camera is total garbage!! I mean like yea it takes pictures and things like that, but the quality is awful, I actually had a cell phone from the early 2000's with i think about 1.5 megapixels and it shot pictures a little better than this camera does, and God help you if you don't have the perfect lighting, you won't even have a shot, if this is a camera you need quick for the money, get it because it at least takes pictures, but if you have the time, and the money, it's definitely worth spending the extra few bucks to get something that isn't total crap like this one. all i'm saying is don't let them fool you, it has no memory of its own and on top of that you have to buy one of those memory cards and then on top of that you have to buy this holder to put the memory card in so that it can properly fit into the camera...either way this is my experience I know the megapixels were crash but the price was only a fraction of what other people were selling it for and I was 10 months pregnant and my son was coming and I needed to get a camera quick, I wanted to capture the first few moments of his life for a cheap price, even if it was on a crappy camera, and that's exactly what I got a crappy camera, I haven't even picked it put since the first day I used it, I hate it, total waste of money, I'm just happy I hardly spent any money on it, too bad I didn't spend the money on something else, like some formula!!!

CIB 460 TVL w 24IRs is good for $29 stock by Amazon. On time (2 day UPS).

Even has power supply! Installed one today. I have 400 TVL Night Owl original CMOS cams, an Evertech 700 TVL (with Sony Super HadII ccd chip and 30 IRs), and I now bought these. I prefer a wider angle lens (3.6mm) unless it is a door cam where better detail is wanted, then 6mm is ok like the N-O originals. I fitted a 2.1mm lens into one N-O cam (had to lose the IR ring to fit they are so compact)and love it but I can't find them original on Amazon.

After head to head comparisons I find not near enough difference to justify more than the $29 CIBs here. Day or night. The vaunted Sony Super HAD chips are not with the cost, possibly the non Sony companies use such cheap other parts that the benefit is largely lost (maybe the lens' are cheaper also). I never even find a full Sony CCTV camera on Amazon.

Do not go crazy on too many IR LEDs either !!!!

Too many make a face shine so bad it is not recognizable at the close range where the camera can detail the face well enough to prosecute, etc.

More than 20 IRs is just overkill unless the camera is really only for more than 15 20 feet where detail starts to suffer with all the cameras. I use the (approximately) $10 (36 LEDs?) IR illuminators separate from the cameras to see further out.

If you expect anything like an ordinary modern camcorder image you need to bite the bullet and invest in all digital (NVR not DVR) and HD (at least 720P, but why not 1080P at those prices). Uses ethernet type cables, not CCTV. Upside is many of the cams have SD cards usable like gamecams without cables, and can stream to websites without a computer.

I bought this camera to replace a Zmodo camera on my front porch. I have 8 cameras but the colors are off and they are not very high def. Well this camera has much better colors but the definition is about the same. I bought it because it is a CCD and supposed to be a better picture but it is about the same as my other cameras except it is a wide view with pretty good colors, and the night vision is much better than my Zmodo, but in the day time the definition is about the same. The wide view makes things seem farther away but it does seem to have better definition up real close like under 5 feet. I'm glad I bought it because now I can see the entire side of my house but I think I'll just keep the rest of my cameras. It is really a lot like my Zmodo cameras, it is clear enough for a police video out to about ten feet but after that I don't know if it would hold up in court, although you can still easily identify people you know, you just don't get that clear facial definition. Here's what I don't understand, I bought a spy camera for 10 dollars that is a on a key chain, it holds a mini card, and it has much better definition and colors than these big security cameras. It has a tiny lens and it weighs like an ounce or two...what's up with that?

I purchased two CIB 460TVL cameras as replacements, and they have much better day and nighttime performance. The camera is a bit larger than I expected, and appears to be well constructed. For my purposes, the IR illumination works fine, with little noise in the picture. Daytime color is also better, and the camera does a good job of handling areas that have both bright sun and shady sections. This camera also has a 3.6mm, wide-angle lens, which allows it to view more area. The mount is also well designed and easy to adjust.

I purchased the SD-4700 mainly for its progressive scan feature and I must say that it does make a big difference. I'm using this player with a Philips digital widescreen HDTV (32" tube) and, finally, I'm starting to see the full potential of the DVD format. Some people may argue that since a lot of new TVs (especially HDTVs) are equipped with high quality line doublers, you get all the benefits of progressive scanning directly from your TV, but at least in my case, the SD-4700 does a much better job than Philips' own "Natural Motion" technology in presenting progressive output while still maintaining that "film quality" of the... err... film :)

The remote control is a lot easier to use than previous Toshiba models and provides very easy access to all the features you may need during playback (e.g. subtitles, audio and angle selection). It also contains a rather large joystick that makes it very easy to navigate menus. Also worth mentioning is the fact that all the controls are also available on the player itself. Very useful for these times when you accidentally "misplace" the remote.

As for the supported formats, I had no problems playing DVDs, VCDs, music CDs & CDRs and MP3 CDRs. The MP3 support is very basic and has some quirks. For example, I still can't really understand how the player determines the order of tracks. Seems a bit random to me but there must be a logical explanation here :). Anyway, the feature actually does work, the overall sound quality is good and that's what counts. I haven't tested the player with DVD Audio discs yet so I can neither confirm nor deny the problems reported in other reviews.

Now for the kinks, which are minor but still prevent this player from getting 5 stars:

1. Some widescreen HDTVs (my Philips among them) do not allow the user to manually set the aspect ratio for progressive signals. This means that you may get just a little bit frustrated when you play widescreen, NON-anamorphic DVDs ("letterboxed" -where the "black bars" are coded into the frame to make it display correctly on 4:3 TVs). Your options with these DVDs are to either watch them letterboxed in a rather small 4:3 viewing area (annoying!), have the SD-4700 stretch them to 16:9 (annoying because it will mess up the aspect ratio) or use the zoom feature of the player to try and get the optimal picture (frustrating but doable). What this player really needs is a smart zoom feature that removes the black bars and scales the picture to fit the screen (like most widescreen TVs have) but I guess you just can't get it all. That said, since most new DVDs are anamorphic (contain no black bars and therefore always displayed in the correct aspect ratio), this can be considered a minor inconvenience.

2. The player has some problems displaying menu items in 4:3 progressive mode: highlighted menu items sometimes get totally messed up. This doesn't happen with native 16:9 DVDs or when you set the player to stretch everything to 16:9, so it's not really that big of a deal.

3. Pixel cropping I think this player crops almost half an inch off the bottom of your picture (I made sure this was not a problem with my TV not being properly aligned). According to the AVIA test signals I used, over 25 pixels were cropped out and that's considered a little too much. Still, I guess many people wouldn't notice this glitch because their TVs are probably cropping so much more... :).

All in all, I am very pleased with this player. You really do get a lot for your money here! Sure, there are a few kinks but they are not horrible (unless you are a non-compromising videophile). If you have an HDTV, you really owe it to yourself to get a progressive scan DVD player, and this is probably one of the better (and cheaper) ones out there.

I purchased this unit wanting to have one player handle all formats, as well as progressive scan, which will be my next upgrade (16:9 format screen).

As a DVD player, it doesn't get better than this! The player has exceptional picture quality with no "hangs" or artifacts. The freeze frames are crystal clear. The zoom function was far more useful than I had expected. It is amazing how far you can zoom in on a picture with minimal picture quality degradation. If you do not care for the black bars you are forced to have on some wide screen DVD movies, you can "zoom" as much of them away as you want! Right now it is connected to a Mitsubishi 46" with an S-video cable. This is the best picture this set has ever displayed. I can't wait to see what it will do on a progressive scan set! All the outputs you need for audio are there coax, RCA, and optical, as well as the ability to handle Dolby Digital, DTS, etc.

As an MP3 player, I am disappointed. Some files that played flawlessly on an MP3 player or PC had distortion, and LOUD sound artifacts when played on the Toshiba. Other similar files played fine. Although the addendum sheet stated to use 8 character file names and no more than a 74 minute CD-R, it seems to work also with 80 minute CD-Rs and CDR-Ws (same results with MP3 poor). No problems when the MP3 file was burned in standard CD audio format, though.)Also, no problems with standard audio CD playback.

The remote control was easy to use and intuitive for major functions. It is not the "universal" type. The menu structure is easy to use.

The manual was clear, but I would like to have seen it broken down by type of media being played back. An extra manual is included to correct all the errors in the original manual Most of these correct functions the manual states the player will do, but in reality does not do.

Overall, I am pleased with the machine as a DVD/CD player.

The perfect DVD player. It has all the features you could want, and if you someday plan on upgrading your TV to HDTV (and you should), the progressive scan feature on this player will blow you away. This model packs in all the high-tech yet user-friendly features you'd want. Did you know that hardly any other brands feature a ZOOM feature like Toshiba does? Gosh, I thought it should be a standard feature. The Toshiba SD4700 (and most other Toshiba models) has it, as well as every stereo decoding feature you'll want or need. Prepare to be awestruck by the superior sound, picture, and breadth of options!

Considering this is my first standalone dvd player, it's hard for me to fully ascertain how strong this product is. I bought the 4700 for the video quality more than the audio features, and in this respect, I am more than pleased. But it's not all peaches.

After two months of owning this product, I have confirmed that this dvd player has the ill-fated "chroma bug" problem. I only became aware of this recently when watching Vertical Limit on DVD. While watching the "making of" featurette, there was significant bleeding of bright red, especially evident with the subheadings. For the more casual consumer, this isn't that big of a problem, because it's hard to notice. But I'm sure any meticulous buyer will want to know. However, since many of Toshiba's, Sony's and Pioneer's lines of dvd players are conflicted with this problem, I don't see any reason to particularly bash this model. (By the way, this chroma bug flaw can't be fixed. Let's just hope future mpeg decoding technology will overcome this problem. As far as I know, only the Panasonic brand has consistently avoided the bug.)

The chroma bug issue is not a big deal, since it's rarely noticeable to the untrained eye. What's more important is the overall picture quality, and that's where this product shines. I'm using this player with standard analog connection (no S-video, no hdtv, interlaced mode), and the video is SUPERB. I can only imagine how much better the progressive scan would be. There should be no concern that the video display will far surpass expectations.

However, dealing with the audio features can be frustrating. Switching between 5.1 Dolby Digital audio, DVD-audio discs, normal CDs, and mp3 music requires you to switch modes manually. There is no automatic conversion, so if you use this player a lot for audio playback between different mediums, be prepared for some tedious menu changing. Some reviewers have complained of the player's poor mp3 playback. I don't know personally since I only use this player to watch DVD movies, but I could imagine audio problems existing. The LCD panel only has 8 characters, so I'm sure this will come as a problem for long mp3 filenames.

The zoom feature was surprisingly good, and although I think the remote is ugly and bulky, I quickly adapted to it. The manuals and documentation were pretty good, and the Toshiba website seems to provide good support and FAQs, although I haven't found them to be necessary yet (that's always a good thing). The warranty is only three months, which is downright sad.

Despite it's flaws, I'm still giving it 5 stars. Why? Because 1) the video is superb (my main priority), 2) there are a plethora of features, 3) lots of connectivity choices (all gold-plated), 4) $250 (Best Buy) is an absolute steal for a progressive scan player, 5) very simple graphical menu system and ease of installation, 6) fast and silent disc loading, 7) plays problematic discs (ex. Matrix) without fault, and 8) it doesn't heat up and seems to have strong build quality.

Weighing the cost-benefits, I'd say it's as close a perfect product as one could get for the first-time or casual DVD consumer. An audiophile, however, might want to entertain more scrutiny.

GPX PD908B 9 inch Swivel-screen Portable Dvd Player (Black)

My GPX portable DVD player stayed in its box until the day before a family vacation. Once out of the box, the player worked for 2 hours and then the screened died. Please note that it was in my possession (not my kids) before and after it died. My wife and I spent about an hour trying to think of some button or command we must have pressed it couldn't be the new player, could it?!? We packed it away, went on with the trip, and I got around to calling GPX about a month later. When I did call, I was first told it must have been me dropping it (I think I would remember and wouldn't have spent an hour trying to figure out what happened). Then, they said they could help if it was in warranty. I had called a little later than I expected and they said that although I called 84 days from when I received the unit, I was 92 days out from when I ordered it so sorry, we cannot help you. The funny thing they couldn't care less that the product failed within 2 hours!!!! I would NOT recommend GPX products.

i bought this product to be able to play dvd's in the car when travelling with my kid. It was about a $100 at Wal-Mart (canadian) and it did not work properly from Day 1. Purchased as a Christmas gift it did not play the first disc i put in it. Loaded up the start screen then froze. From then on it would play certain discs and not others. (all work on my Xbox at home). Don't go cheap on this type of product spend the extra $50 and get a recognizable brand name.

I purchased a GPX PD951BU 9 Inch Portable DVD Player and it is a FANTASTIC player. I do not know how it would compare to the 908B here but the GPX brand is great. Any other review saying GPX is not good is wrong. I have purchased and returned so many. I tried RCA, Panasonic, Sony... all of them failed my expectations. They (RCA, Panasonic, Sony) all had some kind of problem. Either it was no remote control, or the sound was bad or it would not restart a video where you left off. I tried DVD players that ranged from $70 to $250. This one. A brand I never heard of (GPX)is perfect. It has a great picture, great sound, a remote, it swivels (none of the others did that), it starts the movie where you left off, and it is 9 inches. I am beyond pleased. I highly recommend the GPX pd951bu 9 inch portable dvd player (mine is blue). I love this machine. It is easy for my son who is 5 years old. It plays dvd's that I made myself as well as those I purchased. I could not be any happier.

First Alert D575 Digital Wireless Security Recording System

This wireless camera w/dvr recorder is very easy to setup and use. I own a similar Lorex system and this budget red alert is almost as good. The range is great and pairs up easily additional cameras.

I use it at a small business to keep an eye on customers and employees as well and works perfectly even at night. Since it's a digital system it virtually gets no intereference, not even from the wireless router.

Cons

Doesn't record from 2+ cameras simultaneously.

SD cards won't hold much recordings, but then again no DVR SD system will.

Summary

I've read other reviews and it isn't bad as they say. I mean sure this first alert is a budget security system but i still believe that for the price is a great deal.

I purchased the First Alert D575 Security Camera System for at my seasonal campsite. I've had problems with a neighbor lady that has mental problems spraying my bushes with grass & weed killer. The camp grounds manager hasn't done anything about it. So my wife and I decided to catch her doing it on video. Then I plan on calling the State Police and filing charges!! I found the system fairly easy to install. I had it installed in a matter of a couple of minutes. When it came time to set it up; this was another story!!! First Alert advertises it as having "motion activated technology". I had a real problem trying to get it set up for motion activation only!!! There's a setting for X-15sec-10sec-15sec blasts. I couldn't get it to record without being in one of these settings. They sent a 2GB SD Card along with the system. It filled the card up in no time!!! I played around with it for about 3-4 hrs the next day. Still I couldn't get it set up to "motion only". I figured I had better get a larger SD Card if this was going to be the case. The next day I called First Alert to see what the largest size card was I could put in it. The guy at First Alert told me that he thought it was a 2GB SD. After I spoke with him I checked the "Users Manual" and watched one of First Alerts sales videos. The manual said up to a 16GB SD Card will work and the video also said the same thing. I explained my problem of not being able to set it up on "motion activated only" to the guy at First Alert. He told me that there was a "icon" about 12 o'clock that indicated it on the front of the reciever. At the time I only had my "Users Manual" in front of me and that there wasn't any thing like that on the front of the reciever. I was calling him from home at the time. He told me to call him back when I had the unit in front of me. I also told him that there were things like a "Power Saver" mode mentioned in the "Users Manual" but actually I couldn't find that setting on any of the settings!!!! He couldn't tell me what was with that!!! I returned to my camp site. Called this guy back at First Alert but thre was no answer at his office. I decided to play around with it for another hour or so. I found that the "camera" on the remote control has to be clicked on and the red "REC" and the red counter will flash across the TV screen when the motion sensor is activated!!!! When I first clicked this on it appeared that it was video recording all the time. So other users "Be Ware"!!!! First Alert needs to review or revise their "Users Manual"!!!!

So the system itself works great for the price, the motion detection only has about 10ft of range so it's hard to put the camera in an inconspicuous location. The major issue with this system is that it advertises that it won't interfere with your wireless Internet connection it actually dramatically slowed down our Internet. We tried moving the camera, reciever, and Internet routers away from each other... As soon as the camera is on and communicating with the reciever, we lose 15mbps of speed, effectively cutting our Internet speed in half.

AVN80X have very easy to use simple user interface and it do works well with Safari, Opera and IE9... Remind me of my first router install, simple and easy.

AVN80X do support both ActiveX and QuickTime format, as with all IP camera's video

Do get a bit of lag but it around but in my opinion it less than one second barely noticeable...

I tested and monitor my Co. cubical area when I was away (to see who is using my pen) and I did try it on my family and family pets Detection & Tracking and assess control for the front door pet door sensor.

I could see theAVN80X automatically locate the brother face in the frame, zoom in, and follow it. good safe option to monitor guest or family member even under low light condition the quality of the picture and video pretty good as Live MOS Sensor gives you an extremely clear and detailed picture. The quality of the picture was great even in a low-light setting. Even with out any light in the room -AVN80X built in White LED on the front produces an enough light that can illuminate objects in total darkness at least twenty feet or more in front of it.

I did try to enabled Digital Smart Zoom, this feature did allow me to leave the controls, and the AVTECHAVN80X could zoom in on the dog movements as motion got detected...(also I used the option with pet door sensor attached to the back of theAVN80X)

Also you could use it as security camera with remote monitoring plus option to attach compatible sensors to monitor door/or windows opening away from the camera viewing angle... (Excellent option for Home/Corporate Security)

Myself as visual person I would like to mention few options I really like:

LED Status Indicators gives me visual ability to check the current Internet &LAN connection status easily

We've had this product for 3 years now. We use it for our (now 5 year old) son while traveling. The battery life only lasts us about 1 hour when fully charged. That is my only beef. But it comes with a car charger and an ac adapter. We bought a power inverter that kind of acts as an extension cord to get this thing to the back seat and in my son's lap (on top of a pillow). That way if we have an extra long trip that is longer than an hourwe can just plug right in to the cigarette lighter. It has headphone jack and you can plug it right in to any sound system or TVso you can use it as a regular DVD viewing back up when your regular DVD player goes broke. Ours was VERY VERY durable. It's slide off my son's lap a few times and hit the floor of the car. It's still intact and in perfect working order. I think it's a great buy. We use it while doing laundry at the laundry mat too. It's saved us from many a grey hair.

Marantz PMD661 Portable SD Recorder

Update Notes: 10/2010: Another buyer asked me to look into the power draw for battery usage reasons. After using the TWO independent battery conservation modes on the 661 (turn off the leds and minimize the big display from 5 rows to just one row of data) the jumpy current waveform settled down to 315 mA DC +/15 mA. For battery usage, you can use a 315mA draw for conservative recording power usage estimates. So that perspective users of the 661 can get a feel for it I've uploaded 5 most often seen sample screenshots with notes in the pictures section above. The notes cover what each screen does and how the function keys work. The instruction manual shows you how to wire pushbuttons and resistors to the 4 terminal remote plug which is VERY hard to find (most are 3 terminal left/right/ground) you can use the 3 terminal because the only 2 points you need are ground and the tip, but here is the 4 pin version for $0.28 on amazon 6FT 3.5 mm to 3 RCA AV Camcorder Video Cable Sony JVC 6 with this cable and the instructions in the manual you can build your own remote with LEDs and extended switches beyond the marantz remote from the PMD660 Marantz RC600 Mic Mount Remote Control which could be operated by computer or other automated systems. Basically the 4 terminal plugs are becomming more common now. The resistor values chosen for pushbutton operation are common values and easy to find.

UPDATE 8-2010:

I've put alot of hours on my PMD661, made a custom case for it, and now I must report a MINOR negative about a whole class of products (the 661, the H4n, certain flashlights, etc)

While doing flashlight testing on the Fenix TK-40, 'Menace' pointed out that it seemed to drain AA batteries without being used AT ALL while a similar light, the TK30 did not. I confirmed his findings using an inline ampmeter a small amount of power was flowing with the light turned off. As I measured other products that used the AA NiMH cell, the problem proved to be a bigger issue than just one flashlight.

This "trickle" power is just like your car leave it in a garage at the airport for 30 days and don't expect the battery to be full when you return. The amount is small, but placing a plastic strip between a battery and the spring then routing it out of the battery compartment will stop the power from flowing. The "off" power is higher on the PMD661 because it has a timer and can turn itself on for play or record functions with preprogrammed times which other recorders can not do.

Update 9-12-2009 I just returned from a cruise ship using the 661. I used a Canon hs-10 avchd camera for capturing the main stage video and the 661 to plug into the ship's mixing board for audio. The ship's audio engineer was excited to see the 661 and hapily pulled out an XLR patch cord set to give me the house mix line level out, which was recorded in the same lossless format (24bit/48 khz) used by the camcorder audio making synchronization in adobe premiere pro a breeze. The final benefit was hearing the show audio as it left the mixing board to the amps instead of being picked up by the camera set on a tripod in the audience full of echo and laughter, clapping etc. The final production to blu-ray disc sounded like I was right on stage with the camera. The marantz ALC circuit performed better than expected and prevented digital clipping while maximizing dynamic range. End of edit.

[ACTUAL PRODUCT REVIEW BEGINS HERE]

When Marantz added a line level XLR input that bypassed the microphone preamps as opposed to just a mic level input in the 660 (prior model) I finally jumped at it. Since I work alot of mixing boards I have access to the final stereo mixdown at line level voltages. Whats the big deal? Recording at line level gives you 20dB more signal to noise thats 100 times better for those who don't speak dB compared to mic level xlr inputs. Also recorders that put an attenuator in front of microphone amplifiers tend to be noisy marantz is not built this way (the H4n I use for MIC level recordings is it is not well suited to line level input because it must attenuate the signal to 0.8% before recording it) If you look at your dvd player at home all the outputs are line level simply to get rid of noise. With such a fabulous recorder, why in the world would you want 100 times more noise in your recordings?

There are many other factors Marantz did that made the 661 the optimum professional recorder to get the display is bright and easy to read under all lighting conditions, they used a 1/4" headphone jack so the little 3.5mm headphones wouldn't pull out at the worst moment (another pro move) and they improved the case quality. There is also a digital input for people who are 100% digital already, however it stops at 44.1/48 KHz sampling.

Given these features, the PMD-661 sits head and antlers above all the other compact recorders out there offering professional connectivity at an economical price. It's also fully customizable the bright display is dimmable through 8 steps for indoor club use at night, and it features dual rca line level outputs for analog playback. About the only thing I would like to have seen would be a worldclock input for synchronizing analog recordings to digital cameras, but the size of the bnc connector would have nixed that option in this handheld product.

Prices are starting to drop I bought in early but you can save 50 bucks off the original price. Good job Marantz (from a former dedicated tascam fan!)

Cons

-timer based recording draws more "off" power inserting an insulator made from a plastic battery case easily prevents draining batteries until you need to start if you do not use the timer functions.

-can not entirely shut off the display most minimal power usage is to shut off LED vu meter and just have one line of text in the OLED window with essential data on it.

-lacks a 1/8" mic in but has a 1/8" stereo TRS line in instead so all mic level voltages must go in via XLRs

-4 input sources but only 3 personalities means one input won't be used without reconfiguring (usually digital in)

-lacks digital out (other than USB and removing SD card)

Yes, the price on this baby is steep. You can get a pretty good Marantz HT receiver for this money.

But what you get for the price of two Edirol HDs is a leap in sound quality, build quality, and ease of use. Build quality may or may not matter in your situation. The way my stuff gets hit in the field, it's important for me. Camera tripod mount is great for this unit--it sets it apart from the mics on mic stands and helps others to notice the piece of high-end gear on the stand and try to be careful around it.

Data dumps are a breeze in Mac and Windows. I've had no file misreads yet, anywhere.

Line-in XLR allows full low-noise field mastering in a multi-mic stereo setup.

hi-res lossless is the selling point for many at this price level. There is simply nothing else at this price point that can do this resolution.

And because of the XLR line ins, your hi-res lossless recordings will have an exceptionally low noise floor.

None of the mid-level digital recorders can do this, and this is why I ponied up.

It sounds so much better than its lower-priced competition that it belongs in this price category beyond them.

If you want Edirol quality sound, Marantz makes the 620 for you, a thoroughly competent unit in its price class.

But if you have significant audio to record and you are willing to spend an extra 300 bucks to get far better audio quality, this unit will make you happy.

I'll be brief; First off I will state that I am very particular, and hard to please. I have been in the audio/music/broadcast business about 40 years

I have not used any of the other flash recorders. Prior to purchasing I did heavy research and the PMD661 fit my needs. This has the features I want, and the sound quality is amazing. I have used it with a Rode NT4 stereo mic, a Sennheiser shotgun mic, a Sennheiser broadcast headset, and direct from the console via spdf digital. All produced great recordings.

The internal mics will do in a pinch, but are not the best, and the preamp for the internal mic is noisy. The external mic preamps are clean and quiet. At first I though there was a lot of noise, but it turns out to be from the headphone amp. The actual files sound great.

Transferring tracks is a breeze

The design and build quality are fantastic

cons;

Headphone amp is VERY weak seriously. I would pay for a mod.

Software included is for Windows only

Internal mics pick up a lot of handling noise.

No timecode sync

Cost a bit high but then well you get what you pay for. This is suitable for professional work.

My setup is a Rode Ntg-1 Rode NT4, Rode Blimp and Marantz PMD661.

Some considerations:

1 The recorder is very good, very easy to use. Mutch better than Zoom in terms of sound quality

and built quality. Zoom though, comes with some very nice features, like a swiss knife.

Limiter is one of them that Marantz doesen't have and can be very usefull.

Other like a metronome is useless for me, but can be nice for bands or musical groups that want to record rehearsals.

2 I did some recording of the cheering for the first Brazilian match in the world cup with North Korea in São Paulo, with the NT4 and the internal mics. The difference is huge.

The Nt4 gives us a very nice sound stage. Since i was in a neighbourhood with lots of residential buildings we can here a lot of sounds coming from everywhere and NT4 delivers it.

The internal mics not. So, not good for ambience and similar sounds.

3 Well, I did a lot of research and MaRANTZ seem to be the best for me, considering i use it for also different purposes. I needed something with good quality for ambience and foley

and also internal mics that could be usefull(not like those of the Fostex Fr2-Le for instance). So i'll use the

internal mics just for rehearsals and interviews (i'm also a musical director for a theater company).

They are ok for that purpose.

4 When you use just one entrance in stereo recording mode, like a directional mic on L, the other Chanel (R) sounds very noisy in the headphone.

So using just one entrance you are obligated to use the true mono recording feature.

But on the other hand it's very nice, because you don't need to ocupate useless space in the sd card.

Well i loved it, i bought also the Marantz Carry case, it fits the unit perfectly and it has a lot of openings for the cables

and the entrances. But it just fits the unit, anithing else, like extra batteries and cables must be carried

in a extra bag.

I've owned this unit for a few weeks and I must say that Marantz really hit one out of the park with this one. I had previously owned a PMD660 and it was a nice enough unit, but I could never understand its wild popularity. It had a cheap feel to it and the sound was mediocre. The 661, on the other hand, is a tank. Think of the 660 as the rough draft for this finished product. Just about everything is done right this time and the sound through the improved preamps is significantly cleaner. I've read some comments that it may be a little large, especially considering how compact much of the competition is nowadays, but I think the size is perfect. You can easily hold it in one hand and the display is big, bright and easy to read at a glance.

The only improvement I can think of offhand, possibly in a 2nd generation unit (are you listening Marantz?) would be a color display. As easy as this one is to read it would be even easier if record mode glowed with a red "rec" and pause with a green "pause."
