In itself the product is very good but unfortunately the claims of being able to use on PAL DVD's is not true. While it works fine for NTSC DVD's and is great in size and connecting to a TV, I bought the player specifically to use in England and to be able to play DVD's either NTSC or PAL within the regions described by the product.

I'm just very disappointed that I'm not able to make full use of the machine otherwise it would of been a great little player.

The Coby DVD-209 plays DVD's fine for the price. But to advertise it as a Multi Region code free zone free DVD player is just wrong. The instructions included with the player do absolutly nothing. So if you want a cheap portable dvd player I would recomend this but if you want to play other region dvd's look elsewhere.

Had the same problem with playing any region DVD's as the instructions it came with didn't work. This worked for me and it may be worth a try for anyone having problems. Open DVD Tray. Use the remote control and go into 'setup'. Press the VOLUME keys ' vol+,vol-,vol+,vol' (that's volume plus then minus, plus then minus). That should get you to another screen. Using the ARROW buttons scroll until you get to '255'. Highlight '255' then press 'setup' to exit. Newer models have new locks. Try this if the above doesn't work. Open DVD Tray, Press "PBC Menu" button, Press "8888", Press "OSD" button, Enter "0" for region free. There will be a warning about copyright. Press "Setup" to exit. Good luck it worked for me and I can watch all my British stuff & USA too. Great to travel with, light and easy to use (now).

I was so excited when I first got my Coby DVD player. Played my British DVDs with no problems. THEN....about 3 months later BAM! It just stopped working. Nothing. No matter what I do, it refuses to work. I am DISGUSTED. What a waste of time, money and energy. DO NOT waste your money on this product! Go ahead and spend a little bit extra for a quality product. This unit works and is pretty easy, but I cannot get the top drive to work so I have to set the 2nd one down to be the master. It wasn't worth sending it back, I can still make 6 at a time.

I am new to dash cams but not to mobile technology.

Its pretty cool it has WiFi, GPS, 3-axis gyro, accelerometer, shock sensors and ambient light sensor. It records to a MicroSD card or you can download directly via WiFi to your iDevice or Android.

I bought this 500GW-HD about a week ago and I have been fiddling with it via Telnet/SSH/FTP, iPhone 5 & iPad 4 iOS app, Android app (rooted Kindle 2 running Jelly Bean 4.2) and the MicroSD card directly. I am primarily a Mac and Linux user on the desktop, although I loaded Windows 7 on my Macbook Air & iMac to look at the Blackvue Viewer Windows application (which is much better than the Mac version, BTW. More on this later)

My first impressions of the Blackvue DR500GW-HD are, by and large, positive. The 500GW-HD gets warm, but never hot. The camera mount is solid and very adjustable, the angle of view is excellent and the video quality is much better than I expected, even at night. Audio is crystal clear and in-sync. I expect that Firmware updates will fix/mitigate some of the more glaring defects discussed below.

It has some kinks, which is to be expected as this technology is still maturing. In particular, the firmware is not actually updated with any changes you make on the SD card (config.ini), the camera just reads the config.ini and uses that. But not always. Sometimes, after a power down/power up, the SSID and pwd will be forgotten or some of your other settings (timezone etc.) will be ignored. This may be a Blackvue Mac vs. PC application problem rather than a Blackvue firmware bug, although this did happen twice using the Windows app only.

My Firmware is in English and the latest version as of this writing version 1.003; I bought the 500GW-HD along with a Sandisk 32Gb Class 10 MicroSD card from Amazon. I also bought the Power Magic Pro (from eBay) and hardwired the Blackvue. The PMP is set to 12v & 48 hours and has been rock solid so far. A little background for anyone new to hacking the Blackvue 500GW-HD you can Telnet, SSH and FTP to the device via WiFi. The IP address is 192.168.8.1, login as "root", default password is "pt". FTP is ftp://192.168.8.1/Blackvue/Record/ to access all of your videos.

My config.ini is set to Normal, 1080p, Brightness 1, all flashing LEDs off, default LED colours, default sensors, voice on for everything except Events, custom SSID & pwd, custom root pwd, 1 minute record intervals, MPH and TimeZone to 174. I am in Houston, Texas, if that helps with the timezone thing. I tried setting the Blackvue to 802.11n by adding the line "ap_11n=1" to the [WiFi] section of the config.ini, but it didn't work. Fastest connection so far is 802.11g

Let me briefly discuss the Blackvue desktop Viewer applications for Windows and Mac. The Windows apps I am sure most of you are familiar with (and has been discussed many times elsewhere) so I won't spend any time on it other than to state that if you want to make changes that will persist over reboots, use the Windows application. Contrary to what others have stated, the Mac Viewer app does indeed have configuration settings, and they do write out to the config.ini but I would suggest you do not do this. Use the Windows Viewer app or manually modify the config.ini.

The Mac Viewer app looks identical to its Windows counterpart except for the configurations settings and video quality. Yes, you read that correctly; the Windows video quality display is better, on the same hardware. Go figure. I tested this on both a late model 27" iMac and late model Macbook Air, both running Mountain Lion on the Mac side and Windows 7 on the PC side (via BootCamp). Same files, same SD card, the Windows video looks way better.

Below are some screenshots of the Mac Viewer app. You will notice the similarities to the (superior) Windows app all the same functionality (Events, Parking Mode, Normal Mode, date/time, GPS mapping etc.), until you get to the configurations screens. There you encounter extremely limited TimeZone selection and if you save these settings, all bets are off as to what the Blackvue will actually do when it boots up using these settings (not what you expect, that's for sure). My advice; do not use the Mac app to make any configuration changes.

Let's move on to the iOS and Android apps, both also pretty rough. Both looked like they were written by a 8 year old, with an extremely poor and confusing interface, insane choices of font colours and sizes (very light, bright green on a white background!) along with confusing options. To get to the Live View, you have to swipe the top menu to the right (seriously?) and you cannot delete any videos on the SD card only copy them to your iOS or Android device. Copying a 1 minute video (about 55Mb) takes a while at 802.11g speeds so get comfy. You can configure the Blackvue via iOS/Android, which simply modifies the config.ini file and then you have to reboot the Blackvue for it to read the new config.ini. But given what I have said above (especially the font colours!), don't bother. There is no dedicated iPad app that will take advantage of the big 10 inch screen, just a iPhone app that you can double the size. It is actually better to do this than use the app on a iPhone as you can see the screen much better. The Android app is phone sized and looks fairly bad on the Kindle 2 but it is usable.

Parking Mode takes a while to both engage and disengage, but that can be tweaked via the motion sensors configuration. Event Mode, likewise can be tweaked.

Reading this review, it may appear as if I have been overtly negative towards the 500GW-HD, but that is not the case. As I started out saying, my impressions are largely positive. The Blackvue does what it was designed to do record video unobtrusively 24/7, and it does that very, very well.

The camera is remarkably configurable and very capable, far beyond my expectations. Video quality is par excellence for a 2mp CMOS.

I recommend the Blackvue 500GW-HD.

UPDATED 4/12/2013

Upgraded to latest firmware 1.0.5, but didn't notice any new features or improvements. Also switched to using 32GB card and now on a few occasions it wouldn't record. I have to unplug the camera power to start recording again. WiFi feature maybe selling point, but I haven't used it in 2 month. The video feed is choppy and with delay when using live view feature. I covered silver accents with black tape, looks tacky, but at least it doesn't stand out as much now.

Virus issues: There were reports that there is a virus on the sd card from this seller. I have not had this issue because I purchased this from another source, but prior to upgrade my blackvue to 1.0.3 I've actually formatted the card, so I don't know if I had the virus or not.

I've been using different DVRs over the years, mostly Chinese made, this is first Korean DVR and this is the first one that actually I really like and it addressed most of my previous concerns:

THE GOOD

Compact, simple, non distracting design and solid quality feel

No built-in display, it's substituted with WiFi connection to your smartphone which becomes DVR display. Love this feature! Keep in mind there is about 1-2 second delay in the live image. Silver accents are noticeable. Blackboxes should be All-Black-Boxes, but nothing that black tape or marker can't fix.

Design does not allow you to move the camera horizontally

No built in battery, there is however some sort of capacitor that serves purpose of allowing the cam to save the file correctly when there is no power.

Standard bitrate is a bit low at 7000, but with some modding (search forums) you can increase it up to 15000

I've been having mixed feelings with the mount. On one had I understand the stick on clip design, but I prefer non permanent solutions, like suction cups. Also removal of the DVR is a bit cumbersome. You have to first unplug power then click the button to unlock and only then you can remove it from the mount.

It does get warm a bit to the touch, but venting holes help to cool it down fast after powering down.

I received my purchase which was sent via UPS, 2 day business shipping. The package arrived on time, in great shape and everything inside the same. I had fun installing the camera in my 2012 Tahoe. I mounted it on the windshield, directly in front of my rear-view mirror and ran the cable above the headliner, along the passenger side, down and inside the windshield side support covering, under the dash and to the lighter adapter ( I plan on wiring it directly to the fuse box in the near future).

Before ordering, I had several email conversations with the selling company and they were professional and replied within just a short period of time. They stated that their testing showed the DR500 to run cooler than the DR400 and earlier models (more on that later). They also claimed to be an authorized seller for Pittasoft. I decided to give it a try and placed the order. After I received and set it up, I had a question regarding a setting, so I emailed the manufacturer Pittasoft. Before they would deal with me, they asked for my serial number to verify the product was sold by an authorized dealer. I emailed them the serial number which they indicated was an authorized unit and my questions were answered, however, due to and "only due to" the difference in time between USA and Korea, several back and forth replies took a couple of days.

I have had this in my vehicle for over 2 weeks and the unit runs perfectly. The unit records clear pictures, unfortunately, when I zoom in on a plate of a passing vehicle using the Windows software, most often the plate is unreadable due to the picture's pixels being scattered, and the unit is set at the highest setting, Full HD (1920x1080) @30fps, with no compression; thankfully this is not a deal breaker for me as the rest of the video and sound is exceptional. I did buy a larger 32GB mini SD card which works flawlessly.

The unit has been running 24x7 and goes into the parking mode about 10 minutes after I park in my parking spot. The parking mode records things at by movement, usually locking in on the event 5 seconds before it sees it and then for one minute in length. I'm using the factory settings which seem sufficient for me. One night I had a 1 minute recording at about 2 am. I played the video only to see a small moth walking on the windshield in the vision path of the camera. I liked that, knowing that any passing movement in the middle of the night is recorded.

I want my unit to be as stealth as possible, so in the event that someone were to break in to the vehicle, the recorder would not draw attention, I have all the LED lights settings marked "off" when the unit is operational which still leaves the WI-FI indicator on. I placed a piece of black tape over that LED and now it is totally dark. In addition, I have the voice settings off so an intruder would not be alerted by voice either.

I am currently in Florida and the weather is now in the 80's. With the sun hitting the unit, it does get hot, but then so does everything the sun hits. I have not seen any issues on any of the video, still clear, smooth and good audio. Even out of the sun, the camera is warm to the touch, not hot, and the card, if I pull it out and immediately put it between my lips, it also is warm but does not feel dangerously hot. I'll do an update on the units heat once summer is over or if I have problems sooner, but as of now, I'm very satisfied and don't see a heat issue.

So for now, the following on my likes/dislikes.

Pros:

*Cylinder shape -The unit is horizontal to the window making for a smaller look, so it's not as obviously a recorder is in the vehicle.

*Wi-fi, via an Android App(no screen-again keeping a small inconspicuous footprint) allowing to easily adjust height view, play back and verify everything is working properly. I can view it using my phone or my larger Android tablet, which really is nice. The application also has a settings page where all the camera settings can be adjusted (settings can also can be adjusted using the PC software; I don't have a Mac so I can't say one way or another for that). I have an old unused Droid I have set up with the Android App that is set using only the Wi-fi allowing me to keep it logged into the camera as long as I like.

*Available Settings; normal, event and parking.

-Normal, allows for normal live recording while the vehicle is in motion.

-Event, when an event occurs, such as a sharp corner, fast breaking/acceleration, hard bump, an accident or damage to vehicle, the recorder will ensure that in the case of power loss, the one minute event is saved before the camera can shut down preventing the loss of the data.

-Parked, the camera goes into what I visualize, a none record mode even though the camera sees everything going on in front of it and if and when any movement occurs, it begins recording 5 seconds before the movement and for at least 1 minute or until the movement stops.

*On all the time, so no lag for start up. When I get in the car, the camera has already recorded me approaching from the front and when I start the vehicle, the camera continues on recording.

*Internal clock, minutes are accurate but nonadjustable (this give credibility to the time of the recording), one only needs to adjust the time zone and the clock is right on.

*Long power cord, which should enough for most installations. In addition, unit comes with two 3M window stick-ons (more can be purchased) and 5 or 6 cord hooks that stick to the window or car molding to help direct the power cord.

*GPS system works well and is as accurate as any other GPS system I've used.

*No lag or missed time between video clips

Cons:

*The factory SD card had a Trojan Horse. My antivirus program (Norton) immediately found, quarantined and removed the "autorun.inf" file on the SD card due to it reporting the file infected with W32.Downadup/W32/Conficker. However, if one reads several forum posts about this, it seems this was common on these disks. I formatted the card with the format function built into the camera, all the operational files were automatically reinstalled but W32.Downadup was not. This must have been introduced only to the card when it was made, it is not in the camera software.

*The cost, however, now that it is installed and operational, I feel the cost was reasonable.

*The instruction booklet was translated to English, but it could have been done better, some sentences don't make sense.

*Even though the instruction booklet is in English and touched on most of the options, it did not go into depth about the sensitivity settings, so in the event I need to change them, it will be a bit of trail and error. There is also a "Brightness" setting. I've played with it a little, but I'm not able to see a difference and again, the instructions failed to explain this.

*Most functions of the Android app and Windows software is in English, however, there are a few spots where the English is poor or still in, I believe, Korean.

*The 140 degree view of the camera is nice, however in certain circumstances, mostly with rain or water, the playback view can look like a fish eye. If there were an option of an 120 degree lens, I believe I would opt for that.

Bottom line, I think this is a great unit and I'm glad I opted to buy it. I plan on putting a second camera in my truck, to the rear, however I don't think I will buy another DR500 for this since that unit won't need all the options.

WARNING: The SD card that came with my Blackvue was infected with Conflicker.B Trojan. Before you plug ANY strange software into your PC make certain autoplay is turned OFF, and scan the new device with a good anti-virus scanner. In my case, Windows Security Essentials (Free) detected the trojan and removed it. After that all seems well.

As for the dashcam itself, it arrived in very nice packaging, everything in English and very professional looking. Setup in the car went flawlessly with plenty of length on the supplied power cord for hiding it under the roof and door trim around to my center console cigarette lighter. Although, since the input pin on the cam is labelled for 12V input, I wish there was an option to buy a cable that fit the power socket on the cam and then could be direct wired into the car's 12V electric system. Even the available BlackBox Pro battery protector has the dashcam going through a lighter plug.

Getting the Cam to connect via WiFi to the android app seems a bit finicky, though I'm starting to suspect that it may just be that I'm too impatient. If I try to connect as soon as the voice notification that normal recording has started is over, I can't get a wifi connection without trying multiple times. If I keep trying, after a few minutes it connects and everything is fine. If I wait 5-10 minutes after turning the camera on, then it connects much quicker.

The video quality is great. The unit does get warm to the touch during operation, but with the vent holes, cools rapidly once powered down. I've been using it for only 2 days now, and we're still in winter, if you can call it that in Texas. I'm very interested to see how it continues to perform through it's first Texas summer in a few months.

I have both the DR400-HD and the DR500GW-HD

I purchased the DR500GW-HD for it's live view and wifi function. These features are nice but not what I had expected. It's almost a gimmick.

I had imagined the LiveView function to be just that, live view. Unfortunately the live view gives you a video which is delayed, of lower quality and not smooth. It's pretty much only good for adjusting the camera. On both cameras, the "Blackvue" logo can be used to adjust the camera. Align the Blackvue logo horizontally and the camera angle is pretty much set correctly.

Don't expect the wifi connection to be like your home router. If you think you can sit at a cafe and use Live View from across the street you'll be diasppointed. It's only good for a very short distance, less than the stated 10m. Additionally, even with the supplied class 10 microSD card, viewing recorded video through wifi is not a very smooth experience due to a lot of buffering (on multiple iOS and Android devices). On top of that, I occasionally get a "weak signal" error on my android devices when connected so I have to get out of the mobile app and reconnect.

It is 44% bigger (by volume) than the older Blackvue. Not sure why they had to make it so much bigger for the WIFI function but it is noticeably bigger. The camera recording angle is much wider (156 diag/123 hor/90 vert degrees vs 120 diag/98 hor /55 Vert degrees). Although the recording angle much better, it tends to loose some details of license plates.

The biggest problem is the video generated by the DR500GW. It is worse in quality compared to the DR400! In areas with a lot of trees and dark objects, the video quality is horrible with big blocks of pixelation. When viewing the video using the Blackvue windows application (approximately reduced to 30%) the video looks ok but you can still see pixelation. The same video zoomed out to 100% is pretty bad. In other situations the video is comparable to the DR400, just slightly less in quality. The video from the DR400 is also much better at night. The video from the DR500GW at night has too much constrast and looks greenish. The only setting you can change is brightness and mine is set to the lowest level)

Bottom line? Is DR500GW-HD a worthy upgrade? NO! While it has wider recording angle and better cooling, the DR500GW-HD produces lower quality video. Additionally, the Live View and WIFI function doesn't work as expected/implied.

If the bitrate can be increased to improve the video quality (perhaps a low, medium, high instead of just compressed and normal) and the WIFI streaming (both video replay and Live View) works smoothly with longer range, then Pittasoft has a innovative winning product. At the current iteration, it's a down grade from the previous generation.

Vivotek 1-CH Dual Codec Video Server VS7100

I have one of these already, not from this seller. They work great to convert a CCTV camera to IP signal for recording to a network server and for live viewing from the web browser. This seller HDVideoDepot has not sent a shipping confirmation and the product was ordered 10 days prior to today. I would love to have the product, but I may have to cancel this order and find another supplier that can get it to me tomorrow. I give 4 stars for the product and 0 stars to the company for no response. Please correct his issue as soon as possible.

I bought one of those $500 wired security systems (made by First Alert) from Menards. It comes with for cameras, its own monitor for viewing and a built-in DVR for recording. But I wanted a way to view the video feed from elsewhere in the house. This item fits the bill! I just plugged in a coax from the output of the First Alert to this video server, then plugged an ethernet cable to a network hub.

It did take a little configuring... you have to use a program on the CD to initially configure it, and this program works only on Windows. All I have are Macs. The program would not work using Parallels (which lets you run Windows on the Mac within Mac OS X). But I do have a Macbook with Windows installed in Boot Camp, which lets you boot up the lap in native Windows mode. The program ran fine that way. The important thing in using the program is to initially set the IP address for the video server. Once you do that, you can just configure the device with a web browser.

Another nice thing is the built-in web server of this device does not use Java or Flash to serve the video, so the video is viewable on iPads.

Also, I was concerned with the small size of this device that it would get hot (devices that process video tend to create a lot of heat). But it runs cool as a cucumber.

My company just installed these Eyecast Cloud Vaults in our office. They work amazingly well. I can view the office in real time from my computer and iPhone 24 hours per day with excellent resolution and refresh rate, and all of the playback, archiving, and exporting is done online and can be performed remotely. We replaced our hard drive based DVR storage system with these devices (the existing cameras plug right in) and the upgrade was tremendous. Further, if anything happened to the actual old DVRs (theft, fire, flood, power surge, etc.), all of the stored data / recordings would be lost. This system, since it is cloud based, prevents the loss of any data due to DVR damage / loss. Also you can expand the storage service online with Eyecast, so it is very flexible. These are good batteries at a reasonable price. As I write, they are powering my wireless mouse. They also provide the power for my TV remote control, my LED flashlight, and even the remote control for my ceiling fan.

It is possible to give batteries an objective rating in milliampere-hours (mAh), an indication of how much charge they store. Unfortunately, the manufacturers rarely provide us with that information. All that I can say is that these batteries seem to work at least as well as any others.

the only real way to compare batteries would be to place 2 different brand batteries in 2 same devices & see how long they last. i didn't do that. simply these are batteries & they work. my only other way is to compare on price & at about $1. a battery here on Amazon, they're not as cheap as 50 cents a battery when on sale at CVS. other than that, good batteries.

I didn't know Panasonic made batteries! I often shop locally for batteries and have never seen Panasonic, just the typical EveryReady, Duracell, and Rayovac. I don't remember purchasing batteries from Amazon ever before although I make almost daily purchases from Amazon (316 so far in 2012, 324 in 2011, 193 in 2010, 206 in 2009...) and have never noticed them as customers also bought this. The Amazon listing says they have been available on Amazon since March 16, 2003; who knew?

I was very pleased to be offered these on the Amazon Vine program (lucky me!) and tested them to work wonderfully in every electronic device I tested them in. My GPX portable DVD player stayed in its box until the day before a family vacation. Once out of the box, the player worked for 2 hours and then the screened died. Please note that it was in my possession (not my kids) before and after it died. We packed it away, went on with the trip, and I got around to calling GPX about a month later. When I did call, I was first told it must have been me dropping it (I think I would remember and wouldn't have spent an hour trying to figure out what happened). Then, they said they could help if it was in warranty. I had called a little later than I expected and they said that although I called 84 days from when I received the unit, I was 92 days out from when I ordered it so sorry, we cannot help you. The funny thing they couldn't care less that the product failed within 2 hours!!!! I would NOT recommend GPX products.

i bought this product to be able to play dvd's in the car when travelling with my kid. It was about a $100 at Wal-Mart (canadian) and it did not work properly from Day 1. Purchased as a Christmas gift it did not play the first disc i put in it. Loaded up the start screen then froze. From then on it would play certain discs and not others. (all work on my Xbox at home). Don't go cheap on this type of product spend the extra $50 and get a recognizable brand name.

I purchased a GPX PD951BU 9 Inch Portable DVD Player and it is a FANTASTIC player. I do not know how it would compare to the 908B here but the GPX brand is great. They (RCA, Panasonic, Sony) all had some kind of problem. Either it was no remote control, or the sound was bad or it would not restart a video where you left off. I tried DVD players that ranged from $70 to $250. This one. A brand I never heard of (GPX)is perfect. It has a great picture, great sound, a remote, it swivels (none of the others did that), it starts the movie where you left off, and it is 9 inches. I am beyond pleased. I highly recommend the GPX pd951bu 9 inch portable dvd player (mine is blue). I love this machine. It is easy for my son who is 5 years old. It plays dvd's that I made myself as well as those I purchased. I could not be any happier.

VideoSecu High Sensitive Preamp Tiny Spy Microphone Audio Pickup Device Kit for Security Camera Sou

I use this microphone with other professional mics for bird and wildlife audio as well as general security. Please note LOUDNESS is determined by the gain (think volume control) of the security unit circuits not just this microphone. More about that below if you wish to read on. For now I will say that this mic, being "powered", has a low noise level and a high sensitivity in a 60 degree cone to the the general direction it is pointing. It is very transparent but does not have (or need) outstanding fidelity. It has AGC (automatic gain control) to even out the loud and soft sounds and that is a good feature. It is ideal for security uses and the price is right! Is it loud enough to capture the elusive noise you WANT to record with your security DVR? It depends on you DVR audio circuits and how quiet of a noise you EXPECT to record. You will just have to try it but I suspect that most "powered" security mics will record at about the same loudness. In a nutshell, this one seems to be a very good value.

Details My microphones all go through an audio mixer before patching into the security DVR or other recorder. Yes, I have meters to monitor and adjust loudness too. Also, I listen with headphones to avoid any chance of feedback loops. If I want any mic to be louder (more sensitive to faint sounds in the lingo of an audio engineer) I turn up the mixer's gain. In theory the more you amplify a microphone signal the fainter and more distant the sound you can hear but there are always limits in the real world, huh?

Turn any mic way, way up and you may hear the rumble from your home's fridge motor, furnace, AC, cars on distant roads, etc (a general low frequency rumble). Also, the more you turn it up the more "line noise" you hear. Line noise sounds like static and can become so loud that it drowns out the distant noise you want to hear. WARNING: Opening a door or speaking anywhere near the mic with the volume cranked up will blow the headphones right off your head and probably ruin your hearing too. Please note that most security DVR systems do NOT have an audio gain control or volume knob. Audio gain in a security system might be useful to folks who complain that a certain mic only recorded things a few feet away!

They do make expensive, professional microphones for videographers and film makers that are very sensitive to distant, quiet noises while keeping background static and noise to a minimum (think about recording roaring lions from 500 yards). Some use a parabolic collector (like a satellite dish) and some called shotgun mics are long, skinny things that listen to a very narrow tunnel of sound much like binoculars or a zoom lens that looks far away but at a very small area. Search Amazon for "parabolic microphone" to see such toy and professional microphones.

Back to this security mic. Actually this "powered, active electronics" mic has less noise and is better for security recording than some professional microphone costing hundreds of dollars. You see, security mics have high gain, low noise and AGC. For any audio geeks out there, this mic is much quieter with MORE gain than any dynamic mic but with less dynamic range. I would have to use a phantom powered or active electronics professional mic to get as much sheer gain with as low a noise floor as this cheap security mic!

In conclusion, for it's intended use this microphone is very good all that you need. But, can you record a grasshopper burp in the next block? Nope! Once again, your mileage (and mic sensitivity) will vary depending on the security DVR you hook it to but I suspect that most security mics will record at about the same "loudness". Try this one and see if it doesn't fill the bill for recording sound around the area your camera covers.

We hooked the audio up to the security system we bought for our home. It works as others said it would. Picks up sound well.

update: so after several firmware updates, virtually all of the xtreamer functionality is broken. Seemly nothing is ever fixed. promised functions have never worked and functionality that once worked is now broken. So the only thing it does now is play DVD isos now. This has been a real let down. I would not purchase anything from this company again. The updates that have been provided have progressively broken features. Never again.

So, I've had a few days to test out the Pro. I have experience with the ROKU SDRoku SD Player box and loved it. I thought I would solve a network storage for media problem as well as eliminating a DVD carousel and CD carousel.

The good: This box is tiny. The box looks nice. The remote is easy to use and has special function keys to speed things up. With fan on low, I only hear hard-drive noise. The UI is usually fast (although it slows down when switching thumbnails) and the boot time is fast. DVD ISOs seem to play without issue. DVD ISOs stream across wireless N without a problem. The device found all of my NAS shares devices automatically. The video quality seems to be good but it is hard to tell as I have had to drop back to composite video as I do not have HDMI.

The difficult:

Firmware:

The firmware provided needs a good bit of work. The functions implemented are brittle. Something works for this file this way and for the next file of the same type it will not. You either get a black screen that you can get out of or the device reboots altogether. Currently, the device reboots all of the time for me as I try something, it hangs and then restarts. The device UI is designed for large screen displays. On my 32", the text is very hard to read. Will not copy files to the box without a flash drive inserted even though it has HD installed.

Music:

The device fails to play any file from my Thecus NAS N2100 Network Attached Media Server (Black). However, it will stream across the network from a PC and will play locally.

Jukebox:

Performance is slow.

Video:

When playing videos through the optical digital cable, it appears that the device is outputting analog signals as opposed to digital. I suspect this because the PCM indication is raised with my receiver rather than just Dolby.

Internet TV

The implementation of the internet tv screens is badly laid out. The thumbnails either do not load or are mismatched in size.

Summary:

The UI is several steps down from the ROKU standard I love.

The reliability of just doing what is supposed to be supported is not there.

This is my third media payer over the last five years or so. The first was an Mvix/Unicorn product, the second was a WD HDTV, and the third is this box. All three are good in their own ways, but this one beats the other two hands down.

This player may not be for everyone out there, because the menus and some features are a little "rough" as other have said, or at least are not exactly intuitive. Put another was, this is the exact opposite of an Apple product. Note: that's not necessarily a bad thing!

This is what this product does well:

It allows you organize massive amounts of media storage into one simple menu for playback on your TV just set any folder from any internal drive, external usb, etc. to the "Favorites" list.

It plays back just about any file type I can throw at it (My WDHDTV had problems with some MKV formats)

Frequent updates address many of the issues that other users have reported. Also note that the updates can de done directly from the menu (as long as you have the wifi antenna) so no need to search for a download, plug in the laptop, etc.

Internet radio, you tube, internet TV channels, etc.

File transfer feature is pretty cool this allows you to transfer files from one place to another without the need to plug the device into a computer. For example, plug in a flash drive or usb hard drive, then transfer over what you want to the internal drive without having to use a computer.

MASSIVE STORAGE (two internal 3.5 bays, esata, two usb ports, plus the possibility of streaming over the network)!

In sum, if you want ultimate ease of use (and you like paying $10-$20 for compressed video files) get yourself an AppleTV, but if you want ultimate functionality and you can deal with figuring out a few settings and menus, and especially if you want to terabyte upon terabyte of storage for your HD MKV files or whatever format you happen to have your movie collection in (ISO, avi, MP4...etc.), this player may be for you!

I was toggling between WD Live Plus and the Xtreamer Pro, just to give a bit o' background on my purchase.

I received promptly from seller (Xtreamer US Distributors) and in fine condition. Box was new and unopened. All items were present an accounted for. They supplied quite a few extras that I hadn't anticipated ie. esata cable, sata expansion card, hdmi cable etc. I plugged it in adjusted a few settings (changed digital audio selection to Tru HD/DTD Master. I also set up my samba connection to Mac Pro and was able to see my shared folders. I also added one of those shared folders as a "favorite", basically making it a shortcut instead of navigating all the way to it.

The menu is bold and visually appealing. I was able to easily navigate through the main menu and all the settings. I fond nothing out of the ordinary good or bad in regards to the main or sub menus. I was able to update the firmware with USB stick (firmware is available here:). Word of caution, I tried using another USB drive initially, and it didn't work. So, make sure the drive is formatted Fat 32 (I formatted w/mac disc utility) and the extracted file from download zip is in the root of the USB stick.

I was able to stream (wired) an m2ts (33.4GB) flawlessly with TrueHD (I have pioneer 7.1 tuner). Info of the file was observable via on-screen text. The video player is able to fast forward in 8 (I think...maybe more or less) different speed increments and in 3 minute increments. No chapter skips, but that's the files fault, not the Pro's. The file was not remuxed with chapter breaks inserted, it is the original file. It also streamed: HD WMV and several mkv(s) with sizes up to 2.4 gb.

I cannot comment on the Pro's movie jukebox via XLive as I have not used it. I did try items through the xstreamering portion of the Pro. I watched several Discovery channel video pod casts. I also watched several movie trailers. I read some bad reviews of the Pro and found them to be unsubstantiated at best.

I thought this product was great, I read good reviews about it, but mine just spontaneously reboots!!!!. Upgraded to the new firmware, but didn't fix it! It just reboots anytime it wants too, and somitimes gives me a green screen, and hangs! It reboots while i'm browsing the files of when using File Mananager. Sometimes reboots when I'm in JukeBox just browing movies....

What is worst, it even reboots in the middle of a movie!!!

It is very annoying!!!! I'm going to return it and give it another try, and get another one... I'm hoping that this is just a bad device that I received. I will let you know next time I got the other one.

5/29/2011 Yes, I bit the bullet again, just to give it another chance... I got the second xtreamer pro more than a week ago now... THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE. DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS PRODUCT. POOR QUALITY. THIS PRODUCT IS HORRIBLE. Nothing but problems... after a week, jukebox started acting flaky, it can't scrape my new ISO, and the third day, it wiped out the entire contents of my movie folder including all the fanarts, xmls and ISO files,, I spent/wasted 2 weeks time ripping my DVDS, only to be deleted by this poor product... I WILL NEVER USE ANY OF XTREAMER products again, I just lost my confidence to this company. What is worst, they dont have a real customer support, I emailed them again, and all I got is the same answer, "Reinstall your firmware.. blablabla". You have to rely to the community of users if you really need help. WHAT A WASTE OF TIME and MONEY.

I've never return a product to amazon before, I can't believe I will ask again for a refund, second time around, for the same product, I dont think this is a coincidence, This product is horrible, Period!. I'm really DISAPPOINTED. I'm very thankful that I bought this through amazon, and they honor returns/refund, especially for very poor product like this one. It's time to buy a competing product now.

This DVD player comes with a very well designed remote control, which makes it easy to navigate the buttons in a dark room with my eyes on the TV. All remotes should be this well designed. Unfortunately, the 5-disc carousel is worthless. You can put five CDs into it, but it will never automatically switch from one CD to the next. If you hit "Play", it will play the current CD, then stop at the end. If you choose "Random Play," it will randomly choose tracks on the current CD, without ever switching to another one. The only way to switch discs is to manually hit the "disc skip" button. This defeats the purpose of buying a 5-disc changer!

The manual claims that Random Play will give you the option to switch between discs, but Samsung Tech Support told me that the manual is wrong.

That said, it plays DVDs very well, and the excellent remote control makes it very easy to use. I especially like the "Instant Replay" button, which lets me jump back about ten seconds to catch whatever piece of dialog I might have missed due to room noise. They also took care to make it very easy to view photo CDs. (This was a problem with earlier models.)

I don't have an HD-TV, so I can't comment on the qualities of the Progressive Scan display.

In summary, this would make a fine, inexpensive single-disc DVD player. It's less expensive than many other single disc progressive scan players, so if you're not counting on a useful carousel, it's a very good buy. But if you want a 5-disc carousel, choose a different model.

I agree with most of the above reviews.I was also disappointed that this changer does not change to the next disc automatically.You would think that a 5 disc changer would play a disc all the way through and go to the next disc number and play that one too.Not so.You cannot randomly play 5 music cds.There are mistakes in the owner's manual.I found this out by calling the 800 number and explaining that the screen does not show what the manual says it should show.Two things that I love about this player:The picture and sound.I hate the fact that on some movies if you stop the player to grab a sandwich and come back and push play again the movie starts all over again.What a pain.Also I wished that when you power up the unit it would not go into autoplay before you get a chance to go to your easy chair and sit down.Subtitles are hard to get rid of.The default position is on.It doesn't matter if you don't speak German or Italian.It will still put the first language listed on the disc subtitles into action.You have to hit Subtitle on remote to turn it off.I like the picture format changer located on the remote.You can changer from letterbox to screen fit with the remote while the movie is playing.I bought mine brand new in box for 69 dollars.

I bought this player a while back, and connected it to my hdtv with no problems, using component cables and progressive scan switch turned on. It plays every dvd I have tried, and every audio cd also. It does not play a standard vcd, instead, it plays SVCDs, which are better anyway, since you can vary the effective quality. I'm pretty sure it will play a DVD-R (Most any player should be able to read this format), but I am sure it won't play DVD+Rs (This is too advanced for most players to play without being designed for it specifically). It plays mp3 cds, but will not navigate through directories, so you'll have to unsort your music and put them all in the root directory of the cd, and it plays them alphabetically. This wouldn't have been my first choice if I was going for the best, but at its price, I don't think you can beat the features that it does have.

There is a very good reason why I make it a rule not to read online consumer reviews. I find that in most cases the author means well, but simply doesn't write an accurate review. Usually this is attributed to lack of knowledge on the subject matter, or lack of understanding in how to use the specific product. In typical fashion, most reviews for this product on this site, suffer from both caveats.

I am neither an engineer or top-tier power user. However, I am an afficianado of Home AV with far more than a passing interest. Believe me when I say that this player is worth every penny...if you can get past the one (potenitally huge) pitfall.

The BAD news: Let's get this out of the way right now. The Samsung DVD C-631P 5 Disc Changer, INEXPLICABLY, does not random play any more than 1 disc at a time, and more importantlydoes not automatically change discs after it has fully played through a single one. If you want to play through all 5 CD's/DVD's in one deft swoop, I'm sorry to say that you will need to press a button on the remote between each disc. Yes, that equates to roughly 4 seconds of "work" for 5 hours of music (if you consider pressing a button on the remote control actual work). I bought a CD changer with MP3 capabilities so I could keep 5 discs in the player without getting up to change them, and that's exactly what I got.

The GOOD News: The audio/video quality produced by this unit (on my standard definition 4:3 32" Toshiba television) is remarkeable. Watching the "Fifth Element" in all of its widescreen beauty is truly breathtaking. Thankfully, the audio quality is every bit as good. This player is running through a Dolby Digital/DTS capable Yamaha V730 receiver and provides superb audio in all digital modes and even stereo. The difference between this player and my last Pioneer (2nd generation, 525) is astounding. I do not have an HD television so I can not vouch for the progressive scan capability.

This unit WILL play almost ALL CD, CDR, CD-RW, DVD, DVDR, MP3, WMA, and SVCD formats and the player supports simultaneous mixed media. You can load different types of discs all at once (MP3, DVD, CD etc.) and each one will be detected. I found this to be very helpful. Some other players need to be filled with all one type of format. Additionally, 4 discs can all be swapped while one is still playing. A handy feature. So far I have not come across a format that did not play perfectly.

The MP3 playability is what really attracted me to this unit and it performs flawlessly. There is a very easy to interpret graphic interface that shows the CD directory structure and filenames (organized alphabetically). At first it appears not to recognize more than one folder on the CD (which baffled me), but I soon learned that a button press is necessary to view all folders (the "RETURN" buton, for those of you who have not figured this out yet). The display is clear and easy to navigate. One drawback is the inability to program different tracks from different CD's in the player. Again, it only allows programming of up to one disc. A potential deal killer for those of you looking for 40+ hours of uninterupted music spread across multiple discs. Not a problem at all for me.

The remote isn't very sexy or overly functionalbut it is layed out well, ergonomic and intuitive. It's also equipped with a few unique features such as "Instant Replay" which allows the user to instantly jump back 10 seconds in a film, and an "on-the-fly" aspect ratio selector. The user can switch bewteen widescreen, pan & scan, stretch-fit and zoom-fit pictures, without stopping the DVD, all at the touch of a button. Not important to me (I watch everything in widescreen, the way films are meant to be seen), but I bet many of you hate the "black bars" and have found the process of limiting them quite laborious. Well, not anymore.

The GREAT News: I could have spent $150 on this player and still been thrilled with it. Fortunately, I purchased it during a sale price and also got a rebate. I had a 10% off coupon good through the weekend as well (at this particular store). My bottom line price was a jaw-dropping $84.00. Simply amazing.

For those of you looking to purchase a player that holds multiple discs, performs remarkably and looks/sounds superb on any set, this is the one you want. If the thought of pressing a button (on the remote control) between discs really bothers you, then buy a different player (this one isn't for you) and please re-evaluate your definition of "inconvenient".

I got this DVD player yesterday, got it all hooked up to my reciever and TV, and I was pleased with it. Played movies beautifully (used digital coax for sound and s-video), but I also wanted it to be used as a CD changer for music. I tried putting 5 music cds in on random, and came to the conclusion that this player is incapable of playing more than 1 cd random. The manual says to "choose one disc or all discs", but this command is missing from the interface. You can choose random, but it doesn't give you a choice of 1 or all. So you're stuck with 1 disc at a time. Also, once it's done playing the one disc, it does not automatically go to the next. As far as I can tell, the only way to switch discs EVER is to manually hit the disc skip button. Sort of defeats the purpose of having a changer, doesn't it...

This is based on my experience with the TC-P50G10, which is identical to P42 but with a larger screen. I bought it three weeks ago, and am very happy with it. I did a lot of research and tried out a number of TVs before settling down on this one, so I thought I would share some of the information and my experience with the TV, and hopefully make your decision in choosing the TV a bit easier.

First thing first. According to my research, the Panasonic G10 probably has the best picture quality among all TVs in mass production as of the time of this review (May, 2009). Most importantly it has pitch dark black level, scorching brightness, high color accuracy, and good motion processing.

I chose the Panasonic plasma over Sony and Samsung LCD for a few reasons. (1) Compared to 120Hz LCDs, Panasonic is significantly cheaper than Sony and Samsung. (2) I think the G10 is better in handling motion than the 120HZ LCDs. (3) The colors on the plasma are more appealing to me than those on the LCDs. (4) It has superior viewing angle. It looks perfect from any angle you will actually watch the TV without washing out the color, prserving the quality of the color.

The third point on color appeal is subjective and calls for description of subjective experience. There are lots of technical comparison of the colors on different displays on the internet, but my perceptual experience is that the colors on the panasonic plasma is very vibrant, punchy, tantalizing, and mesmerizing. The colors look like things in real life, but they are more intense than real life. A friend said "it's prettier than real, but not distorted. It is just like an enhanced colorful world." If you prefer high fedelity to real life colors, you can use the THX mode to tune it down to be very faithful to studio color measures. LCD in comparison is also very vibrant, but it doesn't look as realistic. It's more like computer graphics and less like colors of living things. Technically, this may have to do with the deeper black level on the plasma than the LCD.

Before the G10, I had the Panasonic Viera TH-46PZ80U 46-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV. Both TVs have very appealing colors, but I returned the PZ80U and got the G10 because the G10 has a number of important improvements over the PZ80U: it has a brighter plasma display, has a VGA PC input, lower energy consumption, and more accurate color. Also, its frame is more compact, so I can fit a 50" G10 into the space that would only hold a 46" PZ80U. In fact, the G10 is brighter and more contrasty than last year's top model Panasonic TH-50PZ850U 50-inch Viera 1080p Plasma HDTV.

What else do I like about the TV? It is very bright for a Plasam TV. According to tech specs and online reviews, it is the bightest plasma ever made. In Custom Mode, it is more than bright enough to watch in my room with direct sun light (sun light in the room not on the TV). In Vivid Mode, "you should prepare to put on your ski googles". In fact, it's too bright and overly constrasty and saturated for regular viewing. However, it is quite useful in displaying low resolution and low quality online video such as YouTube or Netflix Instant Watch. The extra boost in brightness, contrast, and saturation make the low quality online video look much more appealing and lively.

VieraCast is kinda cool. Not a deal maker but certainly not a drawback. I used third party firmware DD-WRT to set up a Linksys WRT54G2 Wireless-G Broadband Router as a wireless bridge. So the TV can get online without running a cable to my main router.

I find this TV fits my needs perfectly. But no TV is perfect, at least not for the technically savvy.

So here are the cons:

(1) The sound is mediocre. It is fine to watch a TV show, but lackluster to watch a good movie or music show.

(1.2) True Cinema 24-frame mode flickering is perceptually disturbing because the refresh rate is set to 48 Hz in the mode. It is a pitty because motion does look much more life like and less video like in True-Cinema mode. Wish the TV could run at 72 Hz.

(2) My PC only has VGA out but no DVI out. (This point does not matter for those with DVI out on their computers. A DVI to VGA cable will work fine) The VGA input on this TV does not support 1080 HD. It only supports up to 1280x768. Panny should not cut corner here. Although this problem doesn't really matter for video contents because most computer video resolution is less than 1280x768. And the pixel interpolation effect on the Plasma is more like a CRT and less like an LCD. So the set is reasonably good at displaying contents with resolution lower than its native res.

(3) VieraCast needs improvement. The content is still limited. The search function of Youtube on VieraCast is not as easy to use as on a computer. The Amazon video on demand price is way too high (but this is not really Panny's problem). I would kill for a firmware upgrade that enables Netflix streaming.

(4) The remote is not as well laid out as the one on PZ80. The 3 big buttons above the directional keys are occupied by the rarely used VieraLink, VieraCast and VieraTool. The commonly used Menu key is moved to a small key. Totally wrong choice of ergonomics.

(5) VGA PC input is paired with RCA audio input. I wish it is a 3.5mm (1/8 ") mini jack instead, which will allow a single cable cable integrating VGA video and mini jack audio. Now I have to use two cables.

(6) The stand does not swivel.

Regardless of the above drawbacks, overall I find this TV to have the best picture quality and price combination. The pros by far outweigh the cons. The picture quality of this TV is truly amazing, as such some calls it "The New King of Plasma." Anyone seriously considering an HDTV should take a look at this one, now that the Pioneer Kuro exited the market.

I have just received my new 42 inch G10 in the mail, and I must say, I am very pleased. I researched the living crap out of this set, so my expectations were pretty high. Upon opening the box my first impression was that the overall look of the TV is amazing. Just a solid design, without a whole lot of extraneous stuff. After removing all the stickers it really looks nice in my living room. Also pleased to notice the only light on this TV is a very small dim red light when it is on (I can't stand bright lights on my electronics).

Once I turned it on and started messing around with the settings, I was pleased at how smooth, and natural all the menus are. Very easy to understand, but there is plenty of advanced control for the more hightech custy. Personally I like to tweak my settings, and the Panasonic remembers each input and preset, so its pretty painless. I found THX to have the most accurate colors, although I did tweak the settings a bit for a little more light. Custom allows you to get a very decent preset for TV viewing or daytime viewing in my case. Some say you can actually achieve a better picture through custom than through THX, but in my opinion THX was very good looking when watching a DVD.

Most noteworthy are the blacks. Simply stunning. I haven't seen anything quite like it. I usually say Film is the best viewing experience, and I still do, but these Plasmas really put off that soft color that is very easy on the eyes (unlike LCDs). So far I haven't seen any noise, or jaggies which is good. While gaming I noticed a slight (very slight) yellowish trail when following a white dot across a black screen. This is pretty minimal, but its there. However scrolling text showing no trailing.

24P doesn't work as well as it could, which is to me the biggest draw back. There is flicker, causing it to be pretty much unwatchable unless you pump up the refresh rate.

This is a stunning television, that I hope will last for many years to come. Anyone considering it, should feel comfortable knowing that it really lives up to the hype. Check out the Cnet review for yourself. They have all the geeky details. But from a common customer (although I work in the video field), I can honestly say this TV is top of the line. Probably one of the best Plasmas out there.

*Update It seems my set died today! It turned off, and the power light started to blink 5 times. I contacted Panasonic Concierge, and they are sending a technician out to my house. Luckily I was within a week of my warranty expiring! Very lucky! Be advised, it seems about 2-3% of Panasonic Plasma TVs may have this same problem (google: panasonic plasma blinking light of death). I will update once I get it fixed. Panasonic responded very well so far, and it seems I will not be paying anything out of pocket for the repairs. I will say Panasonic has a good track record with these sort of things, and its not uncommon for electronics to malfunction. The most important thing is how well they respond. So far so good. I recommend getting an extended warranty from Mack.

Over the past month people have been discovering that their 2008 and 2009 Panasonic televisions are no longer performing how they were meant to perform. One of the major reasons why the Panasonic plasmas are (actually now "were") considered so fantastic is because they had excellent black levels, meaning the blacks look really black.

Well that's no longer the case because after a few hundred hours the black levels double and triple to a point where even a mid-range LCD beats it. Panasonic issued a statement that they knew the issue existed and that they were investigating it. Well today they issued a statement that the issue has been reviewed and that there will be NO FIX.

Now to be fair, black levels do rise slightly over time, but they do not double and triple. In fact the Panasonic Plasmas from 2007 do not have this problem. To further prove this, a 2007 Panasonic Plasma after a couple thousand hours of use has BETTER blacks than a 2009 Panasonic Plasma after a couple thousand hours of use.

When Panasonic was asked about this, they said they were constantly "updating" their products. That's good, but basically they are doing a bait and switch on you. They brought down the black levels so they could sell you the television and hope that you don't realize that their newer sets will look worse than their older sets after less than a year of use.

The 2009 Panasonic sets look fantastic till this happens, but once it happens they look worse than 2007 models.

As a side note, the THX on these sets came broken for over half a year. The newer sets have the firmware that corrects the color decoding issues, but if your set doesn't have firmware 1.28A then you have to call Panasonic to have them send someone to your house to update the firmware. Panasonic won't deny you the repair but they sure will try and keep it a secret because they have to pay for the technician to come to your home.

At this point, you're going to see a lot of review cites like mention this issue because it is a serious quality issue. Currently is conducting its own study with the sets it has in house. It'll be about two months before they get done because they have to let the television set run for several hundred hours in order to take measurements.

Please note that this isn't an issue you'll see when you buy the television, it'll be something that comes up later in its life, possibly after the 1 year warranty is up.

I've been researching HDTVs for the past couple of years, and I finally took the plunge when I found a great deal on a 42" Westinghouse LCD back in May. I thought it was a great set... for about 2 weeks. The color would shift noticeably when you moved more than 30 degrees off center. Then the digital tuner started to go.

Since then I've been through 3 more LCDs and one Plasma before I decided that the Panasonic G10 was the way to go. My problem with the LCDs is I am just not happy with the off-angle shift in the black level. When you're sitting head on, LCDs can look great, but as soon as you move off center, you can see the black is not consistent across the screen. This is especially apparent when you are watching a movie with the black bars across the top and bottom. Plasmas are not subject to this issue and plasmas have deeper blacks. This makes a HUGE difference (to me) when watching movies.

The other plasma I had was the Panasonic 42px14 (). I returned it, however, as it had a few issues that kept it from being great (overscan, slow channel editing, etc), and I wanted a 1080p set.

The G10 was a great fit, because I needed a 42" or 46" set and the 1080p as well as the great review on CNET. I bought the G10 through the Amazon Warehouse Deals, and got a screaming good deal (saved about $200) and got a better deal than the S1 (the set just below the G10). The only downside I can see to taking this route is that since I purchased the set, the prices have risen significantly (almost by $200) through the same Amazon Warehouse Deals. I guess you just need to be patient and wait for them to drop again. I don't feel like the prices should fluctuate that wildly. It just feels too opportunistic. Yeah, yeah, I'm well aware of supply and demand, but at some point it just becomes an excuse to abuse trust.

But that has nothing to do with the quality of this set. And back to that point, I am extremely satisfied with this tv set. The image really looks sharp and even standard definition is watchable. People complain about the speakers on all flat panel tvs, but I've found these ones to work great for casual viewing. Just nudge up the bass to about +5.

My recommended settings are going to be in more of a range, since this completely depends on your viewing environment. But here's what I think looks great.

Use Custom setting

Drop the Contrast to somewhere between 55 and 65.

Raise Brightness up to between 56 and 64. Really, just raise it until you notice the black level start to lighten up, then drop it back a notch or two.

Drop the Color back to about 40-46.

Reduce Tint to about -5.

I just left Sharpness as is (75, since I don't see any bothersome artifacts on the screen).

Everything else I pretty much left at default.

Ok, what else do you need to know?

Burn-in / Image retention? Not an issue with these sets. Temporary Image Retention can happen, but it's easy to remove, and if you keep the contrast where I mentioned (lower than 75 at least), it shouldn't really ever be an issue. I've never seen it in the 2+ weeks I've had this set.

Plasma Gases Leaking? Come on, you aren't really going to buy into that myth are you? Nothing but urban legend junk, guaranteed... even if you do claim you have a friend who had to get his plasma set recharged (psst... you're friend got taken).

High Energy Usage? If you tame the contrast to around where I've mentioned above, you'll see energy usage that is very similar, if only a tiny bit higher than the same size LCDs. Seriously, we're only talking a difference of maybe a couple bucks a month (at most) in energy costs.

So... if you're still on the fence, then get off it! Prolonged fence sitting is going to hurt your posterior and make it hard to walk straight.

This TV is simply wonderful. I can't imagine a better TV for the price. I replaced a CRT HDTV with this, and this TV beats it in every single way. Simply can't compare this to LCD's in the same price range. To get similar quality on an LCD you're going to spend almost twice as much.

I watch cable TV, DVD, Blu-Ray, and play PS3 games. All look amazing.

The only very small complaint I have is that the TV can be a little dim if I watch it during the brightest part of the day. My condo is very bright (skylights) so it's probably more the fault of my place rather than the TV.
