Toshiba SD-K220U VCR VHS DVD Player Combo Dual Deck Hi-Fi Player Silver SD-K220U VHS Cassette Recor

Toshiba SD-K220U VCR VHS DVD Player Combo Dual Deck Hi-Fi Player Silver SD-K220U VHS Cassette Recorder
  • Switch from watching a DVD or VHS in one Second Single Button Press Instant Switch!
  • Very Easy & Simple to Use!!
  • Excellent Picture and Sound Quality
  • TOTAL OF 14 Component Inputs & Outputs; Coaxial Component Audio Video Etc.
  • VIDEO CASSETTE RECORDER, Dolby Digital DTS, Surround Features!

I Really REALLY Like this Model. It Is Very Simple and Easy to use.

I Like the Simple to use read and easy to understand LED display in the orange Color. Bright Bold Display Letters.

You can Easily swtch from DVD to VHS at the push of a button as they both share the same controls.

I Lost my remote a long time ago with this unit and Never really used it in the first place But It can be utilized to the fullest without the remote.

REcording VHS IS Easy.

The Unit is Very Fast and Responsive as far as opening a button presses and overall It "reacts" Quick.

I have read some bad reviews on this but I totally disagree.. Maybe only people who had bad luck with them dcided to write reviews but this is a DURABLE UNIT.. as the Kids Have dropped it Twice.. Stuck mcdonalds Ketchup packets inside (I had to dig them out) and IT still plays great.. IT Does Scratch Very Easily on the top.

I Would say that is the ONLY CON of this, The Upper Top of the player is Very susceptible to scratching and denting.. But That doesnt matter to me how it looks It has lasted through alot of abuse and still works.

EVEN MY MOTHER CAN FIGURE OUT HOW TO USE THIS.. It really is great.. I bought the Silver Model that is SD-K220 But actually reads SD-K220U on the rear sticker, maybe this was an Upgrade.. and they made something better about them..?

BOTTOM LINE THIS THING IS STRONG, EASY TO USE, LOADS OF INPUTS AND OUTPUTS, and DOES THE JOB, AND HAS LASTED!

WOULD BUY ANOTHER IN a Second.. MY last Magnavox only last about 6months This is going on over a 1 1/12 of Abuse...lol

Well, I got this product as a gift, and it did work well for awhile. One day, about 2 months after I got it, I plugged the thing in and it just wouldn't turn on. I should've sent it back. What can I say, I was busy, I didn't have a receipt, I really wasn't thinking about it. I never dropped the thing, and I even opened it up to see if it was a busted fuse or something. Now I'm sure the warranty is expired. Sad thing is is that I can't even find any info about it on Toshiba's website, it's as if the thing doesn't exist to them.

So it's a neat concept, DVD/VCR, but buyer beware, it might fail after a bit. Maybe I'm a victim of planned obsolescence gone awry.

Sony ECMCS3 Clip style Omnidirectional Stereo Microphone

Sony ECMCS3 Clip style Omnidirectional Stereo Microphone
  • Clip style for convenient hands-free recording
  • Microphone rotates for flexible placement
  • Perfect for recording via DVR or PC

This clip mike is very easy to use, provides good audio, and is a very good value. I use it with my Sony digital recorder to record music practice and various live performances.

Buy Sony ECMCS3 Clip style Omnidirectional Stereo Microphone Now

It is a Sony, it is priced nicely...so I thought it would perform slightly better than it actually does. Decided to try this lapel mic for indoor interview shooting since it was inexpensive since my wireless system does produce a slight hum even with gain adjustments (can be removed in editing). As long as the mic is located very close to the speakers mouth it is acceptable without using too much gain (which increased the "noise" factor). It is perfect however for use with your computer for Skype, gaming, voice over, etc.

If you do work in the video interview or documentary field, save the $20 and use it towards a high end, wireless system or mic system with it's own power source.

Love the fact that this unpowered microphone picks up sound perfectly. I use it as a clandestine microphone in my shirt's pen slot. Most people never notice the difference. Pair it with one of the Sony digital voice recorders and you're good to go.

Want Sony ECMCS3 Clip style Omnidirectional Stereo Microphone Discount?

Well, it has great quality, yet the usability is quite bad since the wire that you plug into whatever your using is sooo short. I absolutely hate that. If you were to clip it on your shirt and put the wire under your shirt... You would barely be able to make it to the camera... To use this, you have to me almost standing directly in front of whatever the mic is plugged into. I would NOT recommend this product, the short wire is just a dead giveaway...

I use this to record class lectures at school, and I am very impressed. This is my first recorder and microphone, so know that I have no previous knowledge to compare it to. I always sit at the back of class, and this thing catches the lecture loud and clear still. It is multi-directional and picks up all sounds near you. It comes with some software called "sound organizer", which helps you edit and organizer your recordings. This helps a lot to clean up your recordings and even has options to cancel out background noises which makes a big difference. I would definitely recommend this product to my friends.

Stealth Cam Skout 7 Triad-Equipped 36 IR Scouting Camera

Stealth Cam Skout 7 Triad-Equipped 36 IR Scouting Camerait is a all around excellent camera to have, good quality video and pictures, the sound oickup is excellent, the only flaw is hooking it up to a PC sometimes it doesnt read through the usb and have to try a couple times for the PC to read the sd card from the camera, other than that i plan on getting another one

This camera is great for my purposes.

I used it for finding wild animals at night, and it worked very well. The range on the motion detector is very impressive, detected a deer at 50+ feet. The infrared flash works to around 40 feet, and is very clear for night photos. The quality is good on images. Video was alright. The battery life was decent. The casing quality was solid and and easy to set up. The settings for the camera were very customizable and easy to apply.

Cons would be slow shutter speed, there were a few images with blurred photos because the animals were in motion. Additionally the video quality was not as impressive.

Great camera for the price, far exceeded my expectations.

Very good camera for the price. It takes excellent pics and video. The battery life is descent on camera mode but it really sucks em down on video mode. I have used it for a whole year in rain, snow, warm weather, and cold weather and i got excellent pics in all of it. Now, i just hope the monster buck i got on camera all year comes back next year because he gave me the slip this year!! Also, the camera is very easy to operate. It is the first one i have ever had and had no problem using it.

My first Stealthcam quit working after six months in the field. I called Stealthcam to try to troubleshoot it and at the third call, I was solicting to buy their latest and greatest direct from them. I explained that I had two other trail cams and specifically asked if there was going to be a problem interchanging SD cards as that was the problem with my first Stealthcam. Wouldn't be a problem I was told. The second week in the field the camera switched itself from the custom setting I'd programmed to time lapse and took 5,000+ pictures of grass and trees. I called Stealthcam to return the camera and get a refund. I got a couple of runaround questions before I was told the 30 day warranty had expired. In my experience, STEALTHCAM DID NOT STAND BEHIND ITS PRODUCT. I have two Bushnells and two Leupolds which perform well.

Centon Movex MP3 8GB - Black (8GBMP3-001)

Centon Movex MP3 8GB - Black
  • Centon moVex MP3 8GB - Black (8GBMP3-001)
  • Hard-drive-mp3-players
  • Leather stand case 5 60 GB BK

EDIT: I have, since this original review was published, purchased another of these for my wife and was greatly disappointed. Not the same software as in the unit I reviewed, and in fact, there is a media management program on the drive that is a real P.O.S and difficult to get around. In addition, it lasted exactly one month and a day before it lost its programming, and Centon does not provide any sort of support for these things, so no firmware updates or even backup versions of the software are available.

The unit I reviewed was purchased through Comp USA, and the players now available are through another company, so I'm forced to conclude there were different versions sold through different companies. If you can get the Comp USA version, I'd say go for it. Otherwise, the COBY MP315-4G Coby Micro MP3 Player MP315-4GBLK (Black), while only a 4Gb player, not only uses the software I reviewed here, but is so much better made and so much more reliable that the smaller memory size really doesn't matter. ANY of the COBY 300-series battery powered MP3 players easily outstrip this CENTON, hands down.

END OF EDIT

Buy Centon Movex MP3 8GB - Black (8GBMP3-001) Now

I've used a lot of MP3 players over the past few years and this one is a piece of junk. The controls are poorly designed and it kept freezing so that it couldn't even be turned off without removing the battery. I'm going back to a Coby player they're better than any by Creative Zen or Sansa.

Because I like the form factor of a built-in USB connection, I purchased one of these and one of the jWIN audio players at the same time, to see if either was a good product. They both appear to have the same user interface/menu, and might be produced by the same companyhowever, I'm not certain of this. I am a seasoned user of audio players, and have been successful with a variety of products (Creative, Apple, Samsung, etc). Unfortunately, the menu/user interface and navigation capabilities of this product are virtually impossible to use, making it worthless as a music player.

Want Centon Movex MP3 8GB - Black (8GBMP3-001) Discount?

I was looking for a low small and low cost musinc player for running. Because of the abuse I give these devices, I didn't want to spend much, as any of the previous music players I have used only gave me about a year of service. Sweat, rain and regular impacts with hard objects take their toll. This one was as good as any I have owned before, was fairly easy to drive and is still working years later. At 8GB it will hold about 1500 songs, good enough for many miles of happy cruising.

I bought this about a year a ago when it worked i liked it but now the buttons on it stopped working had to replace it

Philips DVD724AT Progressive-Scan DVD Player

Philips DVD724AT Progressive-Scan DVD Player
  • Plays DVD-Video, video CD, audio CD, JPEG image CD, HDCD-encoded CD
  • Compatible with CD-Rs and CD-RWs loaded with MP3 files
  • Includes progressive-scan compatibility with 3:2 pulldown for distortion-free viewing of 24 fps movies
  • Optical and coaxial digital-audio outputs pass Dolby Digital and DTS surround signals
  • PAL-to-NTSC format conversion--great for viewing non-region-encoded European discs

This DVD player is amazing.

Features

It has progressive scan, s-video, component video, coaxial and optical audio connections in addition to the RCA connection.

It plays different kinds of media. I tried regular DVD movies, an original VCD, a cheap VCD, a home made VCD (using Nero), a home made music CD (MP3 files), a CD that contain photos organized in different files (Jpeg files), I even tried a Mini CD filled with photos and a short movie (my digital camera saves directly to a mini CD), each and every one played flawlessly. I still want to try DVD+R and DVD+RW as soon as I do that I will post an update.

When using Jpeg CDs

-You can watch your photos as a slide show and change the transfer time between the photos with one push on the remote (very nice when you want to take your time watching photos you love or just want to go quickly on others).

-You can choose either that the player runs the all photos automatically or you choose which file contents to play (saves a lot of time when you want to watch a specific group of photos).

-You can rotate a photo (very important if you took the photo vertically and you didn't edit it).

-You can zoom in and out (it's beautiful to watch the face of my niece fill the screen).

-You can press next or previous to navigate (and you get a very fast respond).

-You can watch a thumbnail of all your photos by pressing preview on the remote control (although it takes a long time).

What I like about this player

The features I mentioned earlier.

The clean cut of the player and that it has the 4 most used buttons Play/Pause, Stop, Prev. & Next on the player itself just in case you can't find the remote.

When you turn this baby off, no lights remain on.

The feel of the remote control.

What I don't like

How slow it is when viewing thumbnails.

The player can't add effects between pictures when using the slide show (so if I want to watch a group of pictures with effects I make a slide show with my computer then burn it to a CD, but with the prices of the CD-R going down and the fact that with a slide show program you can make much better slide shows than any DVD player can and on top of that also add sounds the lack of the slide show is not a big deal, although it would've saved me time and effort if I can watch all the photos with effect just by using the DVD player).

I really recommend this player, if you just want a regular DVD Player you can't go wrong it plays movies beautifully with great sound for an amazing price.

If you have a top notch TV, stereo or surround sound, or might get one in the future it is important to have a DVD player that will take advantage of it.

If you don't use Jpeg CDs, it is also nice to have that feature especially that in these days a lot of people send each other photos on CDs, so if you have this player you can just pop the CD in and watch the photos on your TV no need to use the computer or be limited by your monitor size.

Buy Philips DVD724AT Progressive-Scan DVD Player Now

I bought one of these but had to return it since it would freeze up and/or stutter while playing the second layer (about an hour or so in) on most of my DVD's. The player seems cheaply made and the features are not that great. The remote, in particular, is very flimsy, with tiny buttons that you can't read in a dimmed room. Afer returning this, I got a JVC XV-S500BK for about the same price and I'm much happier with it.

This is a wonderful machine I have had it a month or two but I have tested every feature they work better than I thought they would.

I am using cables I bought later on that are gold plated plugs and shieled wire. There is such a difference in the quality of sounds and picture with the better cables.

PROS:

-Sharp clear picture

-Crisp clear audio

-Easy to navigate menus

-Easy to use remote that is not as cumbersome as other brands

-Quick disc loading time

-Component video, S-video, and composite A/V outputs

-Optical, coaxial, and A/V audio outputs

-Virtual surround sound for use with 2-channel audio systems

-Built-in Dolby Digital decoder with 5.1-channel analog outputs

-Compatible with MP3 audio files

-View digital still images (in JPEG format) from Picture CDs

-Easy to view and change images when viewing JPEG images from CDs

-Multistandard-compatible: plays both NTSC (American) and PAL (European) DVDs

-480p progressive-scan video output (courtesy of a Faroudja 12-bit/54MHz processing chip) with 3-2 pulldown

-Plays DVD-Video, VCD, SVCD, CD-DA, CD-R/RW, HDCD, MP3-CD and Picture CD formats

-Zoom feature so you don't have to watch it in widescreen

-Inexpensive, compact, and lightwieght

-I compared it feature for feature to a Toshiba SD4800 and it was much more inexpensive the only feature the Toshiba had that this didn't was an onboard DTS Decoder which I don't think is nessecary.

CONS:

-To use the menus and other features you have to use the remote there are no buttons on the player besides Power, Eject, Skip Backward, Skip Forward, Play, and Stop.

I highly reccomed this player for a great DVD Player with incredible audio and picture at a much lower price than any other player on the market.

Want Philips DVD724AT Progressive-Scan DVD Player Discount?

This machine was nicely priced and has a lot of features. I noticed at first that it skipped and froze and assumed it was defects on the discs. The same with new discs. It got to the point it was impossible to watch a movie. I tried cleaning it only to have the thing completely konk out. My warrantly is expired... Be warned.

This little guy appears to be a great value for the price... but as the saying goes... you get what you pay for. After roughly three months (as soon as the warranty expires), the unit starts to do random things... things... things... like repeating sections. Stoping suddenly, and then restarting, and just ending the movie you were watching. It would cost more to repair then to fix... so needless to say I won't be buying a Philips DVD player again. UPDATE (May of 2003) The warranty and customer service are amoung the WORST I have ever incountered. I took the unit back to where I had purchased it, they in turn sent it to Philips (who had it for 5 weeks because they were "back logged." and then sent the unit back to the merchent stating "it couldn't be fixed (they stated they couldn't get parts). It was less then 4 months old! When I called customer service to see what to do they were curt and told me to mail it (at my cost) to them with a check ... and they would send me a new DVD player. I opted to ask the merchant I bought from if they would swap it out which they did... I might mention, they let me choose another manufacturers product... and I bet Philips sales tank at this particular store (I made sure every salesmen on the floor knew what happened and how I was treated). Its a good product if it works... but if it doesn't... watch out!!

PowerShot A2500 16.0 MP Digital Camera with 5x Optical Zoom and 720p HD Video Recording (Silver)

PowerShot A2500 16.0 MP Digital Camera with 5x Optical Zoom and 720p HD Video RecordingGot this yesterday and like it, had Canon PowerShot A2300 IS 16.0 MP Digital Camera with 5x Optical Zoom (Black) before. Just to note, PowerShot A2500 is an entry-level pocket camera which is very similar to PowerShot A2300: 16-megapixel 1/2.3" sensor, DiGiC 4 processor, and 5x zoom 28mm wide angle lens, 2.7" LCD. Even 720p HD video capabilities are the same.

Pros:

1. What really distinguishes it from its predecessor is Smart Auto Mode recognizing 32 shooting environments and adjusts settings for better quality. It automatically selects the best shooting settings for optimal quality based on the environmental factors (lightning I guess) to provide point'n'shoot simplicity.

2. 16.0 Megapixels, with loads of resolution pictures are still clear. High resolution is also good for producing biggest printouts.

3. 5x Optical Zoom is sufficient in most cases.

4. DIGIC 4 Image Processor. Not as fast as DIGIC 5 though fast and powerful enough to give you advanced system options, provide quick-shoot with reliable performance and low battery consumption. As far as I know DIGIC 4 is currently Canon's most efficient processor for budget cameras. BTW it has some Eco mode, that is said to be providing even faster warm-up times and saves the standard NB4L battery, but I haven't tested it yet.

5. Very lightweight, just put it into your pocket, can take it everywhere.

6. Price tag $99. You can't get any better camera for the price.

Cons:

1. Like A2300 it lacks optical image stabilization, though it's got digital image stabilization.

2. 1/2.3" sensor. Well, entry level CCD providing good pictures, not of a DSLR quality, that's all I can say.

Summary:

Sure this is not the best camera in the world. I definitely knew it when I bought the camera. BUT, I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of pictures I shot.

If you're like me (not a pro) and looking for a budget point-and-shoot camera taking family photos and events, mostly shoot in daylight or good lighting, I'd definitely recommend it, taking into account its price tag of $99 just about right.

This is my first digital camera and it's so easy even I can take great pictures. I especially like that I can take stills and videos with the same camera. I highly recommend this camera.

DIGI TECH Replacement Wall + Car Battery Charger for Vivitar DVR-545 CameraI searched for this item at several electronic stores and could not get one. As always, I went to Amazon and they had it in stock and I purchased it and it was sent quickly. This was an excellent purchase. No matter what, Amazon either has it in stock or has a referral on an item.

I absolutely love it! It works like a charm. If I'm on the road and my camera's battery is dead, all I need to do is plug it in and within a few hours it's charged. Made it a whole lot more easier for me to charge my battery.

Zmodo PKD-DK0863-NHD 8 CH H.264 Surveillance DVR 4x Outdoor Night Vision Cameras w/ Bracket 4x Cable ***No Hard Drive ***This item won't work long without buying a SPECIAL kind of hard drive. "NHD" means "no hard drive", and the one from your old computer has error checking, which is BAD on a DVR. Being constantly on, and trying to correct every drive error, will burn out a regular computer-type drive. Once you buy the right kind of drive in 3 months, you've paid more. Check the cost of a Western Digital AV-GP or Seagate Pipeline drive. Doubles the cost.

KGuard BR401-4CW154M All-in-One H.264 Surveillance Combo Kit with 4-Channel DVR and 4 Weatherproof

KGuard BR401-4CW154M All-in-One H.264 Surveillance Combo Kit with 4-Channel DVR and 4 Weatherproof Day/Night CamerasI bought this system primarily for the purpose of keeping an eye on my house when I am away, and recording any theft that might happen. I had the DVR set up and cameras installed in a about 3 hours and it worked fine on the monitor. I spent about 40-50 hours trying to configure the DVR for remote viewing on my iphone. I finally gave up and paid the Geek Squad $89.99 to come out and do it for me. They stayed 2 hours and gave up and left without getting it to work. I then launched into a study program in which I read several long articles and learned how the itnernet works. Then I systematically tried 30-40 different settings until I landed the one that works. Their customer support is not great basically because they don't seem to understand english enough to respond to your emails. THe system would work fairly easily if you have a static IP address. However most all ISP's use dynamic IP's which change each time you get off the internet. I had to connect an old windows XP computer and run a client on it, which I found as a free download somewhere, and set up a free domain name at kguard.org, such as sadsteve.kguard.org. If you contact customer support they will send you PDF files that are outdated and have conflicting information on them. If you write back and ask a question about the PDF they will just send you another copy without answering your question. All these standalone DVR's seem to be built on similar platforms. This is my 4th system. One of my "weatherproof" cameras lasted until the first rain. It stopped working, and I can see water standing on the inside of the lens. I've filed a support ticket with customer support, but haven't heard back from them yet. These things are made in Taiwan and are sold all over the world. They seem to be better at marketing and sales than design and support. I do like H.264 video format, which is a good standard. Some brands have their own proprietary formats, which make it hard to share video with the police department if needed. I don't know if I would have had better luck with another brand like Swan, sold from Walmart or Sam's. I have a feeling the quality is about the same, but maybe the American support would be better. I spent a few hours on the phone with customer support out of California. They would occasionally answer their phone, but usually would have to call me back. Their help guys are not IT professionals and are just there to help you follow the manual. When it doesn't work they can't problem solve. I joined numerous forums to discuss my issues with IT pro's. I spent time with my ISP provider (who was no help), and also called and emailed Actiontec, who makes my router/modem. So there you have it. I feel I could install any of them now that I've learned how to port forward in my router, created a DDNS and deal with PPPoe ISP. When I read "easily connects to the internet via your smartphone" I really want to kick someone. So good luck, you will need it.

Two hundred bucks is a great deal for a 4-camera surveillance system, so I suppose we can't ask for everything. The system itself is very good. The 113-page instruction manual is not easy to read and worse, some of the instructions do not match the system's programming--I suspect a last minute upgrade occurred after the manual was printed. However, it's possible to just ignore the manual and fiddle with the interface and figure it out.

A worse problem is the resolution at night when the infrared kicks in. They claim that it works up to 30 feet, but I'd say only about ten feet is truly clear. If that's good enough for you, the All-in-One is the system to buy.

Thats sports cam seems like a toy, but its real!! The wide angle is perfetc for first person shoots in open places. Good when there are a sunny day. No recomended for nigth recorders....

Buy Midland XTC-200VP3 720p High Definition Wearable Action Camera with 4 Types of Mounts Included Now

Pros: Inexpensive, easy to use. Has just an OFF/ON switch, and not much else. Charges via USB cable or 110V adapter. Movies can be easily viewed or edited on laptop or desktop computer.

Cons: Cheap construction. Microphone cannot be turned off. Only suggested solution is to stick a piece of tape over the hole. Manual is very succinct and lacks detail. No viewfinder, and aiming is by trial and error, mostly the latter. Has single focus wide angle lens, which gives a fish-eye view of the world. Accessories provided are of limited utility and a puzzle to use. Camera is not waterproof.

In summary: You get what you pay for. OK for a beginner, but if you plan to do serious filming you'd better invest a little more in a quality product.

Pyle Home PHDMRCF3 HDMI/3 RGB/RCA Component Combo Wall Plate

Pyle Home PHDMRCF3 HDMI/3 RGB/RCA Component Combo Wall PlateI used a couple of these for a home theater installation to apply each HDMI wall plate in multiple gang installations: 1 in a dual voltage box(120VAC/HDMI) behind the TV (2-gang), the other, also dual voltage, 4-gang(120VAC/speaker/speaker/HDMI), behind the AV components. I picked the Pyles since they seemed to be the best value & I was in a rush to order something to have something to install & stay on schedule.

During the installation, I knew from previous experience, the 2 piece 5.1 speaker terminal wall plates I typically use were a tight fit but would work with a little force. So this was anticipated. My progress came to a screeching halt when trying a dry fit (align the plates) before screwing the trim plate on. The trim plate would NOT fit around the HDMI wall plate no matter what ugh.

Using a box knife & different files, I had to enlarge the hole big enough to go around the HDMI wall plate while my customer watched for an hour or so. By the way, I always use nylon trim plates so I can trim them in times like this standard (hard) plates shatter. I have plenty of custom fabrication experience from my car-audio installation day so this was a problem I could manage but I hate wasting time. What does one do if there is no other option in order to finish a job?

Also worth noting this wall plate does not have the ears at the top & bottom of the yoke to keep left & right sides even for a perfectly flush installation. What a pain if the drywall behind is not perfect.

These ship with their own single gang Decora trim plate. If you plan to use in a multiple gang installation I'd stay away from these & keep looking.

I had it for my music system and projector TV. The pin got pushed back in and had trouble installing it but now it works and for the price I paid, I did not expect much.

CP TECHNOLOGIES CP-UC-108 10-IN-1 I-series Card ReaderI've had this card reader for many years and it still works as good as the day I bought it. I had only on device back then but I knew that I would invest in other image capturing devices. Since this card reader has multiple sizes of card accepted, I have not had to worry if I could retrieve my data. Plus it keeps my desk clear of clutter only having one card reader.

Vizio VBR135 3D Smart Blu-ray Player with Wireless Internet Application

Vizio VBR135 3D Smart Blu-ray Player with Wireless Internet Application
  • Wireless (Wi-Fi): Wi-Fi 802.11n
  • Up to 7.1 Digital Audio via HDMI
  • Apps Capable, Including: NetflixTM, VUDUTM, Pandora®, Hulu PlusTM, Amazon Instant Video, YouTube®, Picasa
  • Resolution Supported: Blu-ray Disc Resolutions of 1080p / 1080i / 720p / 480i / 480p
  • Package Contents: Blu-rayTM Player, Remote Control with batteries, Enhanced Quick Start Guide

We bought this player as a 3D upgrade for our Vizio TV. While we have been very pleased with the TV, the player was a disappointment.

Blurays (both 3D and standard) look sharp and clear, but colors are slightly dull compared to our older LG player. DVD up-sampling is not at all good, very soft edges, very dull colors, and an overall "VHS" look to the image.

This was reason enough to return the player, but the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back was the remote. The remotes for the TV and Bluray conflict with each other. We'd be watching Netflix or YouTube or cable TV and try to make a selection with the TV remote, which would inadvertently activate the Bluray player, initiating HDMI control of the TV, and kicking us out of Netflix or whatever we were watching. It would take seven minutes to turn off the Bluray player and regain control of the TV, so we would have to pull the HDMI plug out of it to speed up the process.

The player came with lots of interesting apps, but I never had a chance to check them out because I knew I was going to return it. The YouTube app has better buffering than the same app on Vizio TVs, although again the image is dull and soft. Some of YouTube's 3D content is still incompatible with the player/TV because you can't swap the left/right images like you can on the website version of YouTube.

Samsung DVD-HD960 Up-Converting DVD Player

Samsung DVD-HD960 Up-Converting DVD Player
  • Upconverting, mult-format progressive scan DVD player; measures 16.9 x 1.77 x 9.8 inches (WxHxD)
  • Transforms standard DVD to near 1080p HD-quality video (as well as 720p, 1080i formats)
  • Compatible with DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD-R/RW, VCD, SVCD, MP3, WMA, JPEG
  • Outputs: 1 HDMI, 1 component, 1 S-Video, 1 composite, 1 coaxial audio, 1 optical audio
  • Supports both Dolby Digital and DTS encoded DVDs

I am continually amazed at how often people blame new technology rather than their own shortcomings of knowledge regarding HD television. To the reviewer with the JVC 61" 1080P television who is "unsure about the upconverting technology" on this player...your JVC tv is a 1080P upscaler and does not have a direct 1080P input. Many people fail to realize that there is a difference between the two when buying their 1080P tv. They see 1080P and assume it's all the same. Most Sony & Samsung 1080P televisions have DIRECT 1080P signal capability built in through the HDMI inputs. Most 1080P sets by JVC and Toshiba, while "compatible" with 1080P, must perform a separate upconversion to achieve 1080P format imaging. I guarantee if you connect this 1080P upscaling player to a Samsung or Sony tv with 1080P direct connectivity, you WILL no longer question the value of the upconverting technology. Right now 1080P upscaling players for regular DVD discs is the way to go. Think of this Samsung player as a bridge to the Blu-Ray/HD-DVD players. You can get a significantly improved picture from this player that takes advantage of your 1080P display unit. This will allow consumers to bide their time until prices drop on the Blu-ray/HD-DVD players, more HD DVD titles become available for purchase, and allow one format or the other to win out.

Let me be the first one to admit that I am no video expert, but I do have a decent untrained eye. Prior to this player, I was using the Phillips DVP642 (a great little player and a bargain at $60) via it's componenet output on my Samsung LN-S4092D. I was pretty pleased with the output (minus a couple of minor annoyances including a persistent blue band of pixels at the top of the image) but when I saw Samsung announce this new player with the much-hyped Faroudja de-interlacer I couldn't resist.

First the good -this player supports virtually anything you can put in it including DivX (unlike the HD950). The menus are also nice although the player cannot adjust color, brightness, sharpness, saturations settings without first stopping the disk -making it hard to compare differences. Also the player supports a good variety of output formats via its HDMI port and pre-packaged cable including 1080P (despite indications to the contrary on Amazon's site). The DVD also includes Samsung's handy EZ View button that allows you to dynamically adjust the aspect-ratio of the image (widescreen, full-screen, and various stretches). Finally the remote has been redesigned bringing it in line with Samsung's new design used on Samsung's new TVs.

Now onto the negatives: Despite hype to the contrary, HDMI offers little-to-no image improvement over standard progressive scan players outputting via a component cable. I had hoped that Faroudja's chip would give an edge to this player (having heard hype about Oppo's drive) but I just can't honestly confirm this in my informal tests. I have no doubt that during controlled lab tests this drive performs great an de-interlace tests but whether this translates into real-world improvement is unclear. A second downside is this drive its slowwww to load times. Disks take a full 20 seconds to spin up before being recongized.

Overall this is a nice player that makes DVD's look about as good as standard definition source material can. If you are in the market for a DVD player this is a good choice although I can't entirely justify its price over the much less expensive Phillips DVP642 given their near identical image quality. One final thought -this drive offers a rock-solid screen-saver mode for those affraid of inadvertant "burn-in." A minor, but important feature.

I upgraded from the Samsung HD860 which upconverts to 720p and 1080i. I was fairly happy with the 860 since it was a huge improvement over my progressive scan player. Since I have a new Samsung HL-S5087 1080p HDTV, I thought the 960 should be the perfect match. Ten minutes out of the box with the included HDMI cable plugged in and the Revenge of the Sith loaded and I could tell a definite improvement. Breathtaking from the start, the blackest black and clearest details. Must be the DCDi Faroudja chip I have read about and expected to do just this. No need to buy blue ray yet. Wow, a great DVD player and handles so many other formats as well. I have not seen anything to complain about and I am a keen observer. I am very happy with this purchase.

Want Samsung DVD-HD960 Up-Converting DVD Player Discount?

Upconversion works much better than I expected. The pictures are superb on my new Samsung DLP HDTV, and yes, the provided HDMI cable works great.

However, the player's control software is frustratingly slow.

---

Item How many seconds should it take for the system to boot up?

To get ready to display the DVD contents?

My Sony DVD player is much faster than this player.

---

Item How many seconds should I wait until I can get back to the DVD menu, and change scenes? or run a special feature? or select a different setup option? Or enable commentary?

This player responds to the user inputs way too slowly.

---

Another issue:

The Samsung TV came with a feature called AnyNet, and an AnyNet cable. When I selected the player, I had expected to be able to control the DVD player using the TV's remote control through this AnyNet interface. I am disappointed that the DVD player does not have the AnyNet feature.

Yes, the DVD player's remote can run most of the features of the TV. It can not, unfortunately, run some of the TV features that I was already accustomed to. Now I must either do without those features, or have both remotes on hand.

I was drawn to this unit by its high-tech specs, particularly the upconversion to 1080p format, being one of very few which do this. In normal operation, the unit works well, upscales very nicely. I use it with a top model Sony 46" LCD, and it still looks good. I do not see much [any?] difference in upscaling between 1080i and 1080p. The unit has some operational qwerks which are minor negatives.

When starting up both TV and DVD player, the unit sometimes fails to sych with the TV, resulting in sound but not picture, or image scrabbled. The correction is to restart the player or cycle the player back to 480i>720p>1080i>1080p. Either technique is a minor hassle which is required [by me] several times a week.

A reviewer commented on an image processing flaw: a near white spot in a near black field will generate [he says] a ring or "doughnut" image flaw at the image contract boundry. I noticed this effecty once in a very minor way in the 300+ hours of use to date. I judge not an issue.

The tray open/close botton is micro-small w/o an color contrast from the front panel. It's a bit of a nuisance, and I wonder "what were they thinking"

On less than full width image DVDs, it's default starting image is "normal wide", which distorts the image horizonatly and requires you to cycle through the options manually to find the correct image setting. The starting image format is user set in a menu, but if you set for wide image format DVDs, you get this issue on less than wide image starts [older movies].

Good Points:

Imaging is just fine; overall, as good as it gets.

The remote is uncommonly well organized and functional [but no backlight].

Menu system for setup is user friendly and the manual is sufficient.

-Its a pretty good deal, particularly since its the only HDMI compatible DVD player I know which packs the requisite HMDI cable in the box a $35+ value added.

Will remember your break point in a DVD, even if you shut off the unit and [in some cases] pull the disk. Restart that DVD and it automatically returns to where you left off without noticable delay. Nice touch.

Final comment: some reviewers comment on "slow loading". My experience is that it is slower that my 6 year old 480i DVD player, but does not seem slower than other upscaling units.

I just sent this camera back!

When I opened the crisp box, I was expecting a crisp new camera like I had ordered. Instead, I received what looked like a refurbished unit. There is a scrape on the side of the camera and wear on one of the wire leads, which looks like it had been mounted and used before.

Never again with this company.

Since this records infrared to blue, black shirts look extremely faded (because they don't absorb infrared.) Fantastically clear picture at night with minimal light. Fairly easy to install. (Recommend wrapping cord around lower piece when mounting to keep it from dropping. Did handle a drop to the ground, but not recommended. The only thing I wish this could do is pan and tilt. Price is fantastic. (sells for double on store shelves.)

  • Package Included: 1 x USB Cassette Capture, 1 x User Guide, 1 x USB Cable, 1 x Headphones, 1 x Software CD (Includes capture and edit software and user guide)

This unit does exactly what it is supposed to. It makes superb copies of your audio cassettes as mp3 files. The included software works flawlessly if you just follow the included instructions. After transferring over 20 tapes it is still perfect. The only things I might suggest is to not touch the unit while it is playing-the controls are very sensitive. Also make sure it is off when you are done-the motor can run with or without a tape in the device and it runs so quietly that it can be easily left on. The auto-reverse works great-makes it easy to start copying and come back later when both sides have finished. Unit works fine unattended but you do have to stop it when it is done.

It arrived on time in a neat little package and included everything in the picture (headphones, a USB cable, and the converter) as well as a small data disc with the conversion/uploading software. The disc fit perfectly in my laptop's drive and downloading the software took less than two minutes. Unfortunately, the USB cable that came with the supplies did NOT connect to the converter. I've been looking online for a replacement cable but as is I paid $20 for a cassette walkman. Not the experience I had anticipated.

I have asked to return this item. It might work just fine, if I could get it to work. First issue was the installation CD for its software. I came on a small CD not the regular size. My CD player is sideways mounted, so it won't hold the small CD. When I contacted the seller, they were kind enough to email me the installation file so that worked. The next problem was that the instruction PDF did not show information for my Win7 system. None of the picture examples matched up and I am not computer savvy enough to figure it out. I just plane lost patience with it.
