before i post my review, i want to say that i spent alot of timegoing over various mp3 players with video, looking for something
that was around $50 or less, but with a decent screen size that
your eyes wouldn't fall out from staring constantly at.
with this product, the Sylvania 4 GB 3.6-Inch Touch Screen,
for the price, screen size, extra memory slot, its more than
a deal, its a steal, comparing to all the other players at this
price, and its a brand name most of us know.
the video aspect was my main reason for purchasing this player,
most reviews haven't really covered what it really can do, hopefully
i will be able to share some insight, i will list below what i was
able to achieve.
this player can play avi/wmv video @ any bitrate, and i mean
any bitrate, weather its 1000 or 5,000, the decoder on this player
streams it perfect, no stuttering, no lost of sync issues ive found.
the aspect ratio : i had to do a lot of research on this player,
since its not listed on the actual video size it can play, at 3'6 inches
i assume the playback would be 320x240 (which it does play this just fine
with no pixel loss) but i was able to encode bluray video source to
400x240 @ 2000kbps and it was beautiful, sharp, and in sync.
was able to have it play both avi & wmv in both those aspect/ratios
just fine in the player, ive read on some players aspect ratio is really
sticky because if its too big or too small, it just wont play, and people
usually spend hours trying to figure out what's the right size.
you can actually throw in 720x480 video (which i did test) there was some
slow playback, so i wouldn't suggest it, i would probably keep the video
at 400x240 just for the sake of having clear crisp quality.
i know this isn't an apple product, or even an Archos, but its pretty
impressive, video playback is always a big issue with people for those
who want something decent, and not worrying if it will play the right
format, sure it would be nice if this could decode .mp4, but im happy
with the avi/wmv format.
the encoders i tested are :
AVS-Video-Converter
Xilisoft Video Converter
Ultra video joiner
the package did not come with a disc, or any software to encode video,
which is fine, because usually those encoders are really bad, and they
dont let you tweak or set bitrates/frames/cropping to your liking, and
if you cannot afford a decent video encoder, there's alot of open source
ones found at video help.
i hope this review helps those who are on the fence about this player,
as for the music, i had no issues, playback, volume was fine, but the
video was my main reason for purchasing this product, and for the price,
screen size. you cannot find a better player on the market.I got this player in black and it came with a USB charging cable and earphones as a gift i think it was December 2008. A couple months of using it and the on/off button broke. I was so disappointed.
Pros:
It's light
It was easy to use
The players case is soft, gel like, so it wont slip easy from your hands
I was able to read my books and save bookmarks for them
I had no problem loading media files through Windows Media Player or just drag and dropping them into the folder
The touchscreen was easy to calibrate
It has to headphone jacks
A hold button, so you can put it in your pocket and forget about it.
there is an expandable memory slot, I had 4gb micro sdhc that works as a separate memory
3.6" Full Color LCD Touch Screen, which is an ok size for viewing movies.
Supports MP3, WMA, JPEG and TXT files
Built-In Rechargeable Battery and speaker
Voice Recording, i never tried this out though
Cons:
As with most touchscreens, it needed a few taps to finally respond.
In sunlight it was hard to see the videos I was trying to watch
The extra memory slot did not combine with the memory from the player
I couldn't play some of the movies/tv shows I loaded, I'm not sure what type they were maybe I was loading the wrong type
The build in speaker was not loud enough so it made it hard to hear as I moved around the room
Like I said before it broke, I went to turn it off and the button broke inside and my friend tried to attach it but the copper strip was not working anymore.
All in all, for my first player it was great. I would still be using it if it hadn't broke. Not too bad of a player and is easy to use and set up , but the touch screen doesn't always work so well even when you calibrate it.
But for the price and ability to add a SD micro card for more storage not a bad player. If the the touch screen were to work better I would give it a 5 star rating.I bought this item back in july of 2011 for my 3yr old daughter. we're always in the car and Although we previously had a portable dvd player she always preferred my ipod since it was her size and she could hold it. I purchased this item because of the price. i've had no problems with it and my daughter totally loves it. The display is Nice; the sound quality isn't too great on its own but she always uses her headphones so its not really an issue; and It has a screen lock so she can't mess it up while i'm driving. it also comes in handy because i can fit about 7 movies onto 1 8gb micro sd card. Its been dropped; stepped on; spilled on; and played with and it still works. The only real negatives i have found with this product is the battery does die after 1 or 2 movies but i keep a usb charger in the car to fix that problem. All and all this item exceeded all my expectations and was excellent for the price.pro Good clear music easy to download too the touch screen works beautifully. Con The external memory does not sync with the internal memory. Screen should give the choice to enlarge the print.
