Sling Media Slingbox Classic

Sling Media Slingbox ClassicWell, I've only been using it for about 2 days now and I must say that I am pleasantly surprised and 99% satisfied! (1% is lost on the fact that only one computer can use it at a time.)

The quality is top-notch! I thought it might be pixelated, jerky, or buggy but it isn't. It flows and runs like a regular TV. It just feels like you're watching TV.

Let me also mention all of the features that it has:

* You can watch TV with a full screen and either have the remote on the screen, or not.

* You can hit a button and it will automatically dock to one side of the screen and re-adjust the size of your other windows. And then, you can even fine tune and adjust the size of that window.

* If you just want it to be on your screen and not be docked, you can do that and adjust that screen size as well.

* You can also create a list of favorite channel icons, so all you do is click onto your favorite channel's icon. If the icon doesn't exist you can create your own!

* It also works with channels like HBO On Demand and with TiVo as well (however, I don't have TiVo).

* If your workplace has a firewall, you can access your home computer using your home computer's IP Address.

This product is HIGHLY recommended!

I was amazed. On my home network, streamed very high quality (though small picture, since the TV signal is actually less than 640x480), and when I went wireless, the quality dropped (as expected), but it kept up with audio, didn't break up. Really amazingly well designed wizard to configure.

Ground-breaking technology. This device allows me to watch my Chicago cable TV service while in Paris. It converts the TV signal into an internet transmission. The image is only about 4 x 3 inches in size on my higher density 1680 by 1050 notebook screen but looks very clean and highly viewable. Sound quality is excellent. Transfer rates ranges from 400 to 700 kbps.

Another feature of this product is that it can be used as an internet based remote control. I have one in my mother's senior home apartment. It enables me to view her apartment, view her electronics, and send remote control signals to her electronics whenever she gets stumped. I'm sure there are many other ways to apply this unique technology.

SlingMedia is an exceptional company. The initial release of this product brought rave reviews -uncommon for release 1.0. They did not rest. Since then, they have released new versions which further enhanced the SlingBox.

I'm impressed with the concept, the technology, the product, the execution, the installation, the enhancements, the updatability, the reliability, the quality of the support, the people from top to bottom. The staff members are very active on avsforum.com. Great attitudes.

While Tivo enabled me to watch TV when I wanted, this product allows me to watch TV where it was otherwise impossible.

This may be the best consumer electronic product of 2005.

Update 15 Nov 2005: Wow, it happened! Time Magazine named it one of the "Best Inventions 2005" in November 21st 2005 issue.

Update 9 Jan 2006: Won PCMag 2005 Technical Excellence Award\

I'm in no way affilated with SlingMedia. I'm just a SlingBox fan boy.

I want to follow up on my first post about the SlingBox. After my review I was contacted by Blake the CEO of Slingmedia asking me if he could have his support Manager give me a call to discuss my problems. After explaning my story to Larry Lane he asked me if I would give the box another chance. He told me that if I ran into more problems that the box can be sent back no questions asked. I decided that since the CEO of the company can reach out to me as a customer that Slingmedia was concerned how they treated their customers! (How many CEO's reach out to the average customer??).

Larry worked with me personally in setting up my new unit to make sure things went right. After the initial set up I still had a few viewing issues. Larry and his team worked with me on the issues only to find out these issues were due to my router. To make a long story short I replaced my linksys router with a Netgear 624A. My entire network seems to be working much better and the slingbox is GREAT!!!!

I cant say enough how wonderful Blake/Larry and their team was! Without the email from Blake I can honestly say that I would not have a slingbox today or in the future. The people running the company are terrific and have completely changed the way I look at their product! I strongly recommend the product to anyone! The technology is amazing! I cant wait to the summer to sit outside on my deck, get some sun and watch the NY Mets play some baseball!!

Thank you Blake and Larry!! You and your team are great!

My friend explained Slingbox to me, and at first I just didn't get it. Then one day it hit me: I could be in a hotel room, get on my laptop, control my Tivo or cable box via remote repeaters, and watch the streaming video sent from my house. That was when I realized that the way I watched TV was about to change again (since I got my Tivo) and I couldn't wait.

I got a Slingbox as quickly as I could and have absolutely loved it. With the help of the great Dell Inspiron 700m laptop, I've watched and controlled my home TV in the airport, hotels, coffee shops, in my bed, at work, and even had a friend's wife catch up on her O.C. in Singapore! I've docked the SlingPlayer viewer while working on my desktop at home. After watching from work a couple of times, my boss bought one and streams the news all day he's hooked.

The Slingbox looks great, is exceptionally easy to set up, and the software works very well. I'm really impressed with the picture and the dynamic streaming based on bandwidth. Make sure you've planned how you're going to add it to your networkI used the netgear Power over Ethernet bridge to connect to my network from the living room, and I'd recommend it if your TV is far from your network (easy setup, high bandwidth, and no extra radio waves going through your body).

As a Slingbox owner, I highly recommend this product, especially if you've been thinking about getting a TV tuner or Video card with tuner supportthis is a more flexible alternative, and SlingPlayer viewer software can be installed on multiple systems.

P.S. Desperate Housewives was only used for the purpose of alliteration. It is not an admission that I watch it. I did actually watch T.V., although not South Park, from Switzerland, and it worked flawlessly!

Sony HDR-SR11 10.2-MP 60GB High Definition Hard Drive Handycam Camcorder with 12x Optical Image Sta

Sony HDR-SR11 10.2-MP 60GB High Definition Hard Drive Handycam Camcorder with 12x Optical Image Stabilized ZoomI write this review because I wish it had been written during the time I was purchasing my camcorder. I will summarize this review between the Sony HDR-SR11 vs. Panasonic HDC-HS9 as basically a toss up, but the little things of Sony leaned me to the SR11.

First, let me say that I really did not want to buy Sony HDR-SR11, granted a Bravia TV is my LCD of choice, but I cannot stand their proprietary memory. Since this camcorder was not purchased for photos this was not a big deal. Though I commend Panasonic for using SD that can be readily found. Sony is pricey (though some may say justifiably so because of the quality) but competition is good for the consumers as we benefit through new, quality, and innovative features.

A salesman from a particular store told me that Sony was good to get for camcorders, and I'd add Nikon or Canon are a way to go for digital cameras, anyway I digress.

Having to see it for myself, initially I purchased the Panasonic HDC-HS9 and after a tough decision I had to switch for the small things mainly from software which I'll get to later, but first let me give a side by side comparison between the two after testing out each product for a couple hours about the features that matter to me at least. I will refer to the products as HS9 and SR11 for the remainder of the review.

Appearance: I'd have to give it to the HS9 for being noticeably smaller. But the SR11 is not big (especially not 90's camcorder big), as I have a man sized hand, but the HS9 wins the compact comparison in this case. While we're on the physical appearance of it, I was disappointed in the HS9 placement of the external adapter. The battery must be physically removed every time you want to connect the adapter as the cable connector is behind the battery. Therefore you cannot charge the battery simply by pluging in the charging cable as you can on many products that you can usually do this and as you can for the SR11. And the HS9 forces you to use the external cable when transferring a video, even though this may make sense, but when you have a short clip and just took the battery off the charger, it's annoying to remove the battery and find the external adapter every time to do so. Bad placement of the external adapter on the HS9 unlike the nicely placed (as is with most camcorders, at least with a previous Canon ZR200 that I own) with the HS9. If size is an issue for you, the HS9 may be your choice.

Video Quality: My opinion of the quality between the HS9 and SR11 was comparable. Between the two it's a toss up during daylight conditions as both are excellent, and the SR11 is stunning as your eye sees it, it appears on the screen, very nice. The HS9 records in a 1080p vs. a 1080i format, that may give the albeit slight edge in terms of theoretically video quality to the HS9. Though the software provided with the HS9 to play back these high quality videos ruins the superb video recording. I hate to say my eye didn't notice the difference between 1080p and 1080i though my correction lens aren't the greatest, mileage of your eyes matter perhaps.

In low light conditions, the HS9 seems to record slightly brighter images which are decent, the SR11 are a bit darker, though look extremely realistic. A true toss up, and really based on personal preference and would have to say they're evenly matched for you to decide.

In extremely low light conditions I found the HS9 surprisingly grainy. It seems to brighten up a extremely dark image thus resulting in grain. I have not recorded the SR11 in low light conditions other than finding a youtube video of a low light condition video and it seemed to keep it's realistic tone but remained dark. The HS9 seems to be on the right track to attempt to brighten up things, as the SR11 does not, but at this point I would have to say the HS9 was unsatisfiability grainy.

Both were grainy in bedroom light condition when displaying directly from the camera to the TV (not recording, just displaying through the cables) though the SR11 might have had a slight lead when panning or moving the zoom in and out a bit more responsive, though hardly noticeable.

Formats: The HS9 takes the lead in this regard as it has a 24 cinema mode, that records frames at 24 frames like some movies. Otherwise the HS9 records in 60 frames per second. However, the Pinnacle trial version could not handle the 60 fps mode and only the 24 cinema mode (though it said it was 30 fps). Though the HS9 software could handle its own 60 fps video fine, more later on software. The SR11 records it's videos in 30 fps

Night vision between the two the HS9 uses a blue illumination for night vision and the SR11 uses the commonly known green illumination as often seen on TV. I like the green better, but the blue was a nice change and this did not affect my decision either way, though it was nice to have on both.

Transfer to PC: Both transfer to your computer via a USB extremely quickly and at seemingly equal times.

Sound: Both are 5.1, the sound is acceptable and nice on both camcorders, I would say that the wind cut function on the HS9 was nice to have and did seem to work, the SR11 does not have this feature, though I'd wish it did. I'd give a slight edge to the HS9 in this one, especially if you record in windy conditions often (soccer games perhaps), which I don't.

Optical Image Stabilization: Both claim image stabilization, the OSI on the HS9 seems to slightly work better, though not noticeably. I think both still need to work on this.

Face recognition: The SR11 impressed me with the facial recognition as it just works. Turn the camera on a person and a white box appears around a persons face and moves as the person does, always keeping focus on that persons face. The focus on the HS9 on faces seemed very good, though I couldn't figure out the white box feature, it might have had to been enabled through a button a readily accessible button at the very top, so not that bad, but the HS9 was automatic.

Cables: Both have an ample about of cables that allows you to connect your camera to the TV with both RGB and Yellow and white/red audio cables.

Remote: Both had remote controls, a definite plus.

Software: This is where I must reluctantly gives this definitely to the SR11 or Sony. First, very few software handle the AVCHD videos at this time, so both Panasonic and Sony include their own software to retrieve the videos from the camera. The Panasonic software is a bit clumsy when it asks which folder you want to save it in, it's a bit manual where the Sony software detects when the camera has been connected, and simply asks whether you want to import all your videos, one click and it does, in a folder already created with an independent name. The Panasonic software called HD Writer had some additional editing capabilities to slice, merge, and delete unnecessary scenes and save to dvd and mpeg2 whereas the Sony had no editing features.

Playback software: I really hope panasonic gets this point. Their playback software most likely did not use directx, where the Sony PMB or Picture Motion Brower does. What this does is use your video card when the HD videos are playing back video. At one point I thought there was something wrong with the camcorder because the playback would skip using the HS9 playback software, but after encoding it to another format, my native video player kicked in and played back smoothly. This really scared me thinking that there was something wrong with the HS9 when there was not, however my x2300 dual core processor was not able to handle the playback of the native HS9 videos alone. This is in contrast to Sony PMB software for playback that installed directx that utilized my video card so that playback of the native format of the camcorder was silky smooth. What's more the Picture Motion Brower is a nice video playback software that throws in additional calendar features of when a video was imported and such, a nicety that should be used with backing up as it's insanity to store large amounts of precious moments on a computer instead of constantly backup up these priceless moments on DVD's and such, those who have had hard drive failures know. Panasonic included a copy of Pinnacle trial version 11 for HD cameras, it could import the HD 60 fps videos, but did not encode them properly. The 24 cinema mode (or 30fps) videos has no problem in Pinnacle. The SR11 videos also were imported into Pinnacle with no problems. Once additional nicety of the Sony software is that you can make a still picture at any moment making a jpeg without importing it into an editing software. Though the HD Writer software has nice features to backup your videos, hard to use in other cases like loading the HD videos stored on your computer. Sony's Picture Motion Brower software is very good to view and backup, though a register folder option was awkward, why not just allow the ability to just drag in folders to register, always room for improvement I guess.

Viewfinders: Both viewfinder display a clear image, though the SR11 has a touchscreen where the HS9 does not, though understandable with the price difference. I was disappointed I could not navigate to playback a video on the SR11 without using the touchscreen since the screen would get a lot of fingerprints, though there are less buttons to complicate things because of the touchscreen. Both have easy buttons to begin recording.

The HS9 had a feature to offer advice how to record like turn on the low light feature (should have had a feature that this would turn on automatically) or you're panning to fast, this advice can be taken as good or bad.

Zoom: The HS9 had digital zoom, but it would not work in 24 cinema mode, go figure, and was adequate. The SR11 had no such zoom, but the normal zoom was satisfactory, though not as far as the HS9.

Conclusion: If you can tolerate the size of the SR11, and wind is not a major issue and are looking for a camcorder with excellent video in all light conditions, good sound, facial recognition, and easy and nice software then SR11 is a fine choice that I am happy with.

The HS9 is a nice choice when size is an issue and windy conditions to utilize the wind cut feature, beware of extremely low light conditions and be wary of the battery having to be removed each time for the external adapter and native format playback skipping (it's not the camcorder, you're computer is too slow, just encode it to another format), there is no touch screen and there is a mini joystick that can be cumbersome as when engaging night vision is easier on the SR11 as opposed to the HS9 as well as low light mode.(though there is a price difference to offset the differences).

I am enjoying the SR11 and things are drastically improved over the miniDV of yester-years. The only thing that I battle each day is why I didn't get the SR12.

I have purchased both camcorders (I admit via BestBuy since returns are a breeze) to compare quality for about a week, and I must say Sony wins hands down. I was actually hoping the Canon will be the winner since I own the Canon 40D dSLR and wanted to stay within brand, but I've made my choice and purchased the SR11 from Amazon. For the record, I was using iMac 3.06GHz intel proc with iMovie/QuickTimePro none of the cameras offer any software for the Mac, but that did not seem a problem:

Sony won me over in the following areas:

1. Autofocus: Sony seemed more responsive. I have a 2yr old, which can't seem to stay put for more than a second and the Sony seemed to obtain better focus on him. Canon sometimes took over 2seconds to obtain focus outdoors at about 5x zoom.

2. white balance: For some reason the Canon did not look natural to me. The colours were off, with my son's pale skin looking greenish indoors at low light.

3. LCD + viewfinder. The Canon does not have a viewfinder, which I suppose contributes to its light weight. I found the LCD to be more than enough in overcast weather, but Sony's 3.2" screen is a pleasure to work with. It's larger(2.7" v.s 3.2") and much smoother LCD. The display is simply gorgeous. Videos show amazing on it and shooting is very pleasant. I found the touch screen to sometimes need a second push, but fingerprints were never a problem I got the same amount on the Canon too. The Canon has the joystick/func button which I found was a bit clumsy to use.

4. compression & low light performance. Since I was shooting mostly indoors, I found Sony to work slightly better in low light, focusing a bit faster and producing less noise. I was comparing Sony's 60i v.s. Canon's 30p mode. Canon in 60i indoors at low light looked too alien green for my liking. Sony produced a bit less artifacts too.

5. Storage: 60G v.s. 32G of space. Both are extendible via memory card, sony requires the card if you want to shoot still photos while filming.

6. Build quality. This was a big one. I'd like my camera for which I paid a good chunk of cash to look good and feel good. It is very sad to see Canon produce those cheap feeling and looking cameras, when their SLRs are built like tanks. Sony was impecable with every detail very well thought through.

7 Sound quality. This was also quite noticeable. Sony's sound was much clearer indoors. It also offers a zoom function on the mic, so that when you use the optical zoom, the mic will also "zoom-in" on the conversation.

8. Price. As it stands, HF11 is 150 bucks more and I can't justify it.

9. Both camcorders can be hooked with cables directly, but only the Sony includes a cradle, and it is much easier to work with just drop it in and pick it up when done. On the other hand, with the Canon I had to plug 2 cables each time I wanted to connect it to my Mac one for power and one USB (you can't connect to PC without the camcorder being powered by the adaptor).

10. Button operation. Canon has a bad design flaw in their quick start function. You see, if you stop filming, and just close the LCD, the cam goes into standby mode. However, by pressing the start button, you can begin filming again without opening the LCD. On the Sony, the start button is embeded in the middle of the on/off/mode ring. The Canon's button is a big blob sticking out the back. It is very easy to accidentally start filming. It was quite anoying to find that my battery has runout in the car because I've depressed the button. On the bright side I now have 30min of footage of my jacket's pocket.

11. better stills. Canon's 3.2Mpixel shots can't compare to Sony's 10.2MP. Also, Sony's flash is well centered over the lens. Canon's is offset and the light looks off in pictures.

12. Better OIS (Optical Image Stabilization). I found that Sony performs better while walking.

Now some people keep whining about 30p/24p etc. I am no pro, and to me 24p looked a bit blocky, and 30p providing very similar quality to Sony's 60i mode. I found the 60i mode to look very movie-like too (It kept reminding me of an episode of "The Office" for some reason.)

To keep things fair, the Canon's Pros were:

1. Lighter weight and more centered zoom lever position. Sony's HDD,3.2" screen and viewfinder seem to add a bit of weight and the lever seems to go too far back.

2. flash-based recording medium should keep things more durable, though I'm not sure flash can sustain as many writes as a regular HDD.

I like this camera. I like the size and the feature set, but to my eye, the AVCHD video quality isn't quite there. It's good, but there is still some "star-stepping" visible around light and dark points, particularly in lower light. I'm comparing this to HDV video shot with my HDR-HC1 and I prefer the less compressed HDV video. That being said, I don't miss the video capture process I had to go through with HDV to get it onto the computer for editing, so I will keep this camera. FYI, for those of you looking for software that works with AVCHD, I've had great success with Sony Vegas Platinum. Whatever you do, don't buy Adobe Premier Elements it doesn't support AVCHD and is very, very buggy.

Pro:

Easy to load video to PC

Good form factor; not as small as the Canon HF10, but small

Nice big screen

Viewfinder for those bright sunny days (HF10 does not have a viewfinder)

Able to hold lots of video

Cons:

Some compression artifacts visible in video

Some skipping in video during rapid movements/ fast pans

Slow focus lock in indoor lighting situations

I purchased thru Butterfly Photo (listed as seller by Amazon). It will change how you work for the better. The included software allows one touch burning to DVD's which is greatin high Def AVCHD. You can archive clips this way and then assemble them (I use Sony Vegas Pro) and not take up alot of Hard Drive space on your computer. You can the author a DVD/Blu-ray and its great. Only negative I have seen is in low light there is some artifacting when you pan fast. I have same problem with my Canon GL-2 but the quality of the image is so much better than GL-2 avi files.

Want Sony HDR-SR11 10.2-MP 60GB High Definition Hard Drive Handycam Camcorder with 12x Optical Image Sta Discount?

I bought this unit expecting great video quality, and compared to anything else I've seen, this is the best. My intention was to archive high quality ACVHD files, awaiting the date when my available time, patience, good software and processor power would make it feasible to edit.

I think that this unit captures about the best video quality that can be had today in a consumer camcorder. The images are great!

Unfortunately, I find the included Sony software to be deficient in its ability to deal with dual-layer disks.....and generally clumsy in copying files.

Nothwithstanding, I still give this unit an outstanding rating because it serves my purpose of saving high-quality images that I can archive on DVD disc or hard drive and edit later.

A nice feature of the native ACVHD that this unit saves in is that you can view it directly on the Playstation 3 without rendering. Given the size of HD video files, this is handy.

Edit as of May 3, 2005: Having seen comments re. other HD camcorder software, I must have expected more than the industry can deliver right now. So please revise my review to acknowledge that the software is about as good as can be had right now.

A good buy! My Grandmother's TV has only a CATV input so this combo works great without having to buy a converter. If I ever buy a widescreen plasma display for Grammy, I can use the progressive scan component inputs as well! Anyway, I just hooked up the rabbit ears to the input and the TV to the output. I was up and running in no time!

Sony WM-EX190 Walkman Stereo Cassette Player with Anti-Rolling Mechanism

Sony WM-EX190 Walkman Stereo Cassette Player with Anti-Rolling Mechanism
  • Stereo cassette Walkman with Mega Bass enhancement
  • Anti-rolling mechanism minimizes distortion when the Walkman is in motion due to active use
  • Automatic volume limiter system (AVLS) conserves batteries and guards your hearing
  • Includes dynamic, over-ear headphones and a belt clip
  • Up to 24 hours extended battery life on 2 AA batteries

If you are just looking for a basic no-frills cassette Walkman and you are not a perfectionist sound aficionado -walk right on by, and buy something else. This Walkman has a nice price, but is a lot less than it sounds.

I had thought I could stand anything, since all I was looking for was a basic Walkman to listen to music and audiobooks. But I actually returned mine (And if I eat the shipping to return an item, that really says something!) What made it impossible for me was that the sound was extremely tinny and hissy, so much so that it hurt my ears. Using the bass-boost actually boosted the tinniness as much as the bass, so that was no help. Using the volume limiter did reduce the tinniness somewhat, but it still sounded terrible. I have bought inexpensive Sony Walkmans for years and loved them, and I bought a cheap Sony microcassette recorder a few weeks ago which is terrific, so I had felt confident enough to buy the EX-190. But the basic sound was unbearable.

To mention the good points, I really like the way it looks. The plastic is cheap, but light-weight. The buttons go on and off easily, unlike some which are too hard to press or which don't engage every time you press them. There is no auto-reverse, so you insomniacs will have to get up, flip the tape, and try to get drowsy again! Overall, I feel it *would* be a decent little machine, except that the sound is just too awful.

I use this Cassette Player while working out for 45 minutes on the ski exercise machine and believe me it helps pass a boring exercise time while using this device. I purchased this unit last August and use it religiously five days a week. Since that time, the batteries were renewed only once when the sound lost its quality. The sound is superb. Actually, I'm picking up more new sounds on this little unit than my boombox with its large speakers. Having over 500 audio tapes, I need a unit such as this and it fits the bill. I'm thoroughly satisfied with it.

This cassette player is well designed and well built. We have been using them for over four years in our elementary school and have had only one cassette player out of 25 stop working. Children (ages 7 11) use them to listen to recorded books as they read along silently. We power them with rechargeable batteries. I also use one to listen to music when I am walking, and it sounds fine to me.

I've been using the cassette player while doing cardio at the gym. In less than a month of use, the sound goes from non-existent to static to fine. It's still covered by the warranty, but Sony has informed me that they usually replace the faulty players with refurbished players and at this time, there have no refurbished players of this model.

I had some trouble fitting the batteries in the compartment, but I won't now that I learned the trick. Otherwise, it's easy to operate, lightweight, and has good sound quality for the price.

The camera wiped clean and worked like a charm the next time I went to use it. The camera is durable can handle being dropped I would not recommend it. But it has happened to me to my surprise it worked like nothing happened.

I would highly recommend this camera. I am a fan of SVP because my ir camera is that brand. So I knew the clarity of the pictures was a given. With what I do clarity definition matters. This is by far the best personal digital camera I have had to date. Its my first SVP camera that has not been tweaked.

I bought this camera to give as Christmas presents, they love it! It's a nice portable and small camera with fine quality. Great price for gifts.

The camera does as it says, it seems to be waterproof and does take pictures from both screens but there is a HORRIBLE DELAY from the time that you press the shutter button to when the picture is actually taken. There is almost 3 seconds in the delay. I purchased 3 of these cameras for Christmas Presents this year, 2 for the kids and 1 for my husband who is an avid hunter.

For the kids the camera would be ok. As long as their friends have a little paitents and hold the smile for 3-5 seconds after the shutter button is pressed.

My husband took it out hunting early in the morning when it was raining. The water didn't damage the camera at all, but the delay in the shutter was too much to catch wildlife in action.

PICTURE QUALITY is NOT AT ALL what other 18MP camera's generally produce. The shots are blury, grainy, too dark, or over exposed. No light meter I have in my collection seemed to help the problem. Used in my studio by the kids to "test the camera's out" we found it extremely hard to get even a few quality photos.

Escient FireBall ZP-1 Network Music Player

Escient FireBall ZP-1 Network Music Player
  • Use your TV to access and play all your digital music on your home theater system or in different rooms
  • Supports streaming PCM, MP3, FLAC (CD Quality), WMA, AAC
  • Built-in 10/100BaseT Ethernet networking; Wired IR, RS232 and Ethernet port for 3rd party external control interfaces
  • Web interface for remote control via web browser; PDA interface for controlling from any pocket-sized web device
  • Wireless network compatible via optional WiFi 802.11 network adapters

I have had two of these for about a year now. In that time, I've discovered these issues:

1. The Fireball PC software used to manage your music from a PC or Mac is kludgy, slow, and unreliable. I have never been able to get it to run without crashing on my iMac running Leopard. Escient claims it works on an iMac, but it doesn't, in my experience. (And I am running a brand new iMac purchased in December of 2007). As a result, I have to run the Escient PC software on a Windows PC rather than a Mac.

2. If you are used to music player software like iTunes, Escient's PC software will drive you nuts because it is so slow and crude. It feels like it was designed in 1996 and has never been usability tested or updated since. For example, there is no way to simply play all songs by an artist--which you can easily do in iTunes or Windows Media Player. With Escient's software, to queue up all the songs in your collection by an artist, you must first add all the artist's songs to a playlist, and then play that. For guests at your house who want to simply hear music by one artist, it's a perplexing, counter intuitive process. Also, the PC user interface is often very slow to load and refresh. (I am running it in a house that is wired throughout with gigabit switches and cabling.)

3. Escient playlists will not hold more than 500 songs.

4. When playing songs in a playlist, I found that the playlists often stop playing for no apparent reason.

5. With the PC software used to manage and play music from your computer, there is no way to scroll through albums and songs. Instead, you have to use a page down button, which only moves you through about six albums or songs. Because there is no way to scroll through your music library, it's a huge pain navigating extensive music collections using the PC software. I have contacted Escient about this, and they said they do not have an update to the PC software planned. Oddly, you can scroll through music when using the TV version of Escient's software. It's just that the scroll functionality is missing on the PC.

6. On the upside, Escient is extremely quick to get back to you when you contact them with support questions. I've contacted them about all the problems above. Unfortunately, the responses I have gotten to most of these issues is either that's just the way it is, or it's a bug in the software that Escient has not fixed. That or they involve complicated workarounds that defeat the purpose of installing a user-friendly system for managing and playing your music collection.

Sony CCD-TRV138 Hi8 Handycam Camcorder w/ 20x Optical Zoom

Sony CCD-TRV138 Hi8 Handycam Camcorder w/ 20x Optical ZoomI bought this camcorder 4 months after the sound on my other one stopped working and I was impressed. The optical zoom is good at 20x and the digital zoom (which is completely pointless) is 990x. The second thing I noticed is that the LCD screen moved to more places and that there was 2 record buttons. One was on the LCD screen, the other was next to the off button. The viewfinder can also move to different places but is still in Black and white. Another feature that this camcorder has is Nightshot Plus. This feature allows you to record at night with a brighter picture than with a flashlight or lamp. There are also many DSEs or Digital Special Effects that you can play with in recording or editing. They are:

Sepia: adds a brown old tone to the screen

Black and White: the way films used to be

Negative Art: reverses the colors in the picture

Pastel: makes the picture look colored in with a pastel crayon

Solarize: makes the picture out of basic colors

Mosaic: the picture made out of squares

Slim: stretches the picture vertically

Stretch: a lot like widescreen

When filming out or indoors there are different Program AEs you can use when the light in the picture changes. If you dont like switching them, you can set them to AUTO. The PAEs are:

Sports

Spotlight

Portrait

Beach/Ski

SunsetMoon

Landscape

If you want to buy this camcorder because it has great battery life, don't. It doesn't have a great battery life but it is still a great camcorder.

I bought this to play back old Hi8 tapes so I could transfer them to DVD. However, there is no S-Video out and no stereo out. Video quality was bad: output was noisey and reds were over saturated. I imagine this is because there is no S-Video out. I returned it and have ordered a Sony GV-D200. Hopefully it will give me better quality since it was more than twice as much. There are some cheaper used options available, e.g. Sony EVO-250.

This is your basic video camera. I'd say it's good for those who just need a video camera for occassional video recording. It has the basic features, with NightShot as an additional bonus. The picture quality isn't as great as I thought it would be (it's a bit grainy on my 36" WEGA), it doesn't record in stereo, and I wish it could hook up on my computer, but there's no USB port. I guess for the price you pay, it's expected. I'd recommend it if you're not really looking for something too hi-tech. I wish I could've gone with something better, maybe the next model up, but hey, it gets the job done.

Like other reviewers, I bought this SONY after my old machine refused to play back my antique but loved tapes. I was shocked at all the DVD complaints I read here.

Although I like to edit tapes on my computer, its a job or two sometimes. I burn DVD easily in real time with a free-standing Sansung DVD burner that cost me 100 dollars. Its got a list of about 125 or so. At the time I bought it at Fry's, and loved it so much I got another a few weeks later. ALl you do next is get Audio and video out from the itty bitty combo plug, and then use the round rca plugs to go to the burner. Yes, a totally free standing burner. Plug it in, and go to the bathroom or what-ever. Automatic performance once started!!!! Now I also use this burner to record TV shows and such. Its like a VCR for DVD media.

I use this for several formats of video. Now I am sure there is a loss of quality, but it does an excellent job of video transfer. FAR superior to recording to VHS tape.

Want Sony CCD-TRV138 Hi8 Handycam Camcorder w/ 20x Optical Zoom Discount?

I purchased this camcorder knowing it was not digital "state of the Art". I have a Sony Hi8 camcorder vintage 1993 which no longer functions reliably in the playback mode, and I saw the TRV 138 as means to play my existing tapes and transfer them to DVD's. I found the TRV 138 to be half the size of my old unit and the batteries seem to last 3 times as long. Thus it functions well and is much handier to use. It has the fold out color viewer, my old one did not, plus some additional features such as a variety of fade modes. The only negative is my old unit recorded sound in stereo, the TRV 138 does monaural. This is not really a factor in my recording needs. I have recorded music performances and found the sound to be satisfactory

Nokia 6300 Unlocked Triband Camera Business Phone (Black)

Nokia 6300 Unlocked Triband Camera Business PhoneI had to wait for 1 month to get it! They never mentioned that it would be shipped from China, there were no 3 or 4 days delivery options. So I waited. I received it in 30 days. I used it for 3 days only. It kept on turning off by itself, specially in the middle of conversation. My friends complained that they couldn't reach me. I decided to send it back (note that time for returning the item without being charged is 30 days and I had been using it for 3 days after 30 days delivery). I wrote Amazon and they said it was too late. I contacted the seller, and the seller started to bargain with me saying that they would send me an extra battery and a charger. I refused because the problem was with a phone itself. They bargained again to send me a replacement phone. What??? To wait for replacement for another month??? Thank you!In the end I sent them the phone back and they supposed to refund my money. It has been 2 months now! I NEVER GOT MY MONEY BACK! INSTEAD I LOST MY TIME, MY NERVES AND MY MONEY AGAIN TO SEND THE ITEM BACK TO CHINA!!! FANTASTIC!

I've use this phone for 5 years. Now just changing battery. It's true that you can use it for 3-4 hours. But it's not a problem for me.

Blue Microphones Spark Digital Studio-Grade Condenser Microphone for Apple iPad and USB 2.0

Blue Microphones Spark Digital Studio-Grade Condenser Microphone for Apple iPad and USB 2.0
  • Features Blue's legendary studio condenser capsule and electronic components
  • iOS compatible with iPod touch (4th Gen), iPhone 4/4S, iPad/iPad2/iPad (3rd Gen)
  • Use the Apple Lightning Adapter (sold separately) for compatibility with iPhone 5, iPad (4th Gen), and iPad Mini
  • Work with Garage Band and other recording applications
  • Focus Control switch offers two sonic signatures in one mic, plus onboard control for volume, gain and instant mute
  • Headphone jack for zero-latency real-time monitoring

This is the best mic. on the market for the money. It is truly a studio quality product that produces studio quality results. If I worked for a competitor, I would give it a bad review. It is a plug and play that is so easy to use. The results are far beyond what any other mic. under $500.00 will achieve. You will not regret this purchase.

The sound quality I get from this mic is the best I've had so far in a usb mic. The best mic you can get at this price. For people who are having trouble with the low input levels, you need to hold down the microphone button for three seconds to switch over to the mic input level. I was surprised at the average of three stars this mic got in reviews and reading over them, I must shake my head at these silly people. It does come with an adapter to use with an iPad, but the sound quality you get with an actual computer doesn't compare and the high quality mic just goes to waste.

I love Apogee and I love my MiC but when I saw that Amazon had this Blue Spark for a mere $155 I jumped all over it (even added the mere $3.99 for next day shipping cuz gear lust has a way with me).

I am in my third decade of project studio singer/songwriting and God only knows how much has been siphoned off the family budget for "tools". Along the way I have sang through expensive microphones and also through telephone receivers. One lesson learned is that it takes a good tune to grab an audience. Another lesson is that we live in an incredible time period.

What used to cost hundreds, thousands to record and produce can now be (somewhat clunk-illy) recorded on the go with a "smart phone". I realize it's not for everyone, but if you wish a fairly portable, nearly high-dollar sound...then order the Blue Spark Digital.

Combined with a USB OTG cable, this puppy makes me SO glad I returned my iPhone and got the Galaxy Note 2. That said, it comes with the 30-pin if you still am an iPerson. I have also connected to an i7 Windoze laptop via USB and it works great with Mountain Lion as well.

Now, for brass tacks...the Apogee MiC isn't a Neuman. I know. I'm not stupid. Neither are you, though. So, if you like Apogee and want portability--buy both! You'll find good use for them. I am sure of it. The "focus" button you will either love or loathe. I personally am afraid of how much I love it. It is best for voice podcasting but I've recorded vocals on a song just to see which camp I am in.

All serious musicians are bleeding cash. Bleed some toward Blue this time around. You'll never miss it!

Want Blue Microphones Spark Digital Studio-Grade Condenser Microphone for Apple iPad and USB 2.0 Discount?

I enjoy working with this microphone, but it took some time for me to learn how to use it. I often get better results when I use the focus feature and keep the gain low to get a cleaner sound. It is definitely a step above the previous usb microphones by Blue. Would not recommend for professional use if you are making music. This is good for demo making. If you are singing you MUST get the pop filter.

I bought the Blue Spark Digital as a way to quickly lay down rough tracks & demo quality recordings for an upcoming record I wanted to have professionally done. The Blue Spark met and exceeded my expectations so much, that I'm considering making my album using this microphone and my iPad!

Sounds great for acoustic guitar and vocals (no other instruments attempted).

For less than $200 and $10 purchase of Garageband or another premium multi-track recording app on your iPad, it's tough to recommend a product other than this one for on-the-go or quick recording.

(Used with iPad Mini and the 30-pin to lightening adapter worked just fine.)

This DVD player was a perfect choice. We were looking to replace our old DVD player because it fritzed out and wasn't playing any of our Netflix videos, much less, any of our home ones. We weren't prepared to spend the several hundred dollars for an upgrade to a more expensive Blu-ray player. So we started looking around and found this player. The price was right and I gotta tell ya it was a really good buy. It plays well on our flat screen and the picture is amazing. Not as amazing as the Blu-ray, but, much better than regular t.v. We had simple integration with our home theatre system as well. Overall this was an excellent value for our money.

We bought this DVD player after our other one started having all kinds of problems after several years of serving us quite well. This DVD player works well. At first, we couldn't figure out why it was playing our widescreen movies at full screen, but figured out that we had to stop the movie and reset our TV type in the DVD menu, and that fixed it.

It works fine for us. We have a non-digital TV and just want something to play our movies.

The DVD player is claimed to give you near HD picture. I compared to my HD signal from my cable provider and the DVD player does not compare. I am not sure how they can make this claim, most likely they found a technical way to legally claim this but I wouldnt buy this player expecting anything near the HD quality of a 1080i (and obviously not 1080p) output. Overall it is a good buy though. Looks good, slim, light. Good buy for the price.

Though technically correct, it has very small remote control with small buttons spaced out only 9 mm (less than 3/8 inch) horizontally and 10 mm (13/32 inch) vertically quite difficult for pressing with fingers even of average thickness of men in Europe or USA. It is lacking fast forward and reverse speeds between 4X and 64X, of which 8X and 16X are very useful, needed, and desired. It also does not have the search function and it does not show the total play time or remaining play time on its poor display. The graphical interface (menus) is substandard and scant. All together, it is poorly designed player though functional and quite sturdy. By far the worst is the remote control.

Instead, Toshiba SD4200 offers a better remote, but Toshiba SD7300 has an ergonomic remote, richness of functions, intelligent menus, and a legible display.

Does the job, but with little kids the remote is hard to keep track of sometimes. The unit does not have FF/RW buttons on it, so apaprt from loading the dvd everytime and sitting through the previews it is a good little player for the money. TAPE THE REMOTE SOMEWHERE SAFE!! :)

When I received my MP3 in the mail, I thought it was a small and slim cute thing. The only irritating thing about this MP3 is that you have to access the volume button through the inner circle bottom';when pushing the button to turn it down,it it turns it up and you have to play around in which direct spots to push that'll turn it. The same goes for going through your list if music. Otherwise, it works and plays well. They come with a great quality earplugs.

  • Motionflow 120Hz technology delivers natural motion )
  • BRAVIA Engine EX fully digital video processor
  • Advanced Contrast Enhancer circuit (ACE)
  • x.v.Color technology

This is my third LCD set. The first being a 32" Sharp Aquos 720p (touted to be the best at the time of that purchase). The second being a 40" Sony V2500 1080p unit. This third being the 40" XBR7. Oh my have things changed over the years.

In the comparison of apples to apples (V-series from 2 years back against the current XBR7), the difference in picture quality is amazing. The color contrast is better (without the need to be in 'torch mode'), and the "blurring" is almost gone.

If I am comparing the unit to another, please assume it's the Sony KDL-40V2500 unit unless otherwise specified.

Menus:

The XMB menu system is great. There is a bit of lag when switching from category to category though. It's just in the animation. The function isn't hindered. The adjustments (that make everyone's heads spin) have some added comments to help you decide which setting is best. It's a nice added feature, but I would still use the best tool to adjust the set: your eyes. Many home theater "elites" will criticize all of the added "picture enhancers" Sony has added. I would ignore their advice of "turn if all off" and simply adjust the set to what looks best to you. Of course, a simple calibration baseline does do wonders: Digital Video Essentials: HD Basics [Blu-ray]

Source: DirecTV HR21 HD-DVR Connected via HDMI to Receiver, then to TV

The HD content has a more crisp and clear look to it. The "MotionFlow" should be either set to Off or "Standard", as the "High" setting is a bit dizzying. It gives a smooth "flowing" visual effect which makes content look great OR horrible (depends on your eyes and personal preference). Many movies (HBO HD, 1080i broadcast, I think) look fantastic. It's almost as clear as having the actual BluRay. The SD content PQ has slightly improved, but nothing amazing.

Source: Playstation 3 (60 gb Launch model) Connected via HDMI to Denon Receiver "Pure Mode" (bypasses any receiver processing), then to TV

Stunning. That is the word that best describes the quality. The first thing I watched after setting up the TV was Batman: The Dark Knight. The detail in the dark scenes were quite impressive. Most LCDs will produce a very dark gray since it's near impossible to reproduce black. This unit get's VERY damn close in my opinion. Details can actually be seen in the dark scenes now (the V2500... couldn't distinguish much). Film content (24p) is best viewed with MotionFlow OFF. With the feature on, it looks like the main subject(s) on the screen are slightly popping out from the rest of the scene. It's an interesting look, but it's not for me.

When gaming, there is no motion blur (1080p and 720p) that I noticed. The V2500 had some blur issues. The colors are crisp and vibrant. Details can be seen even in the darkest of rooms. This is definitely a noteworthy contender if gaming is the main function of this TV.

Intel on-board graphics test... will test ATI Graphics at a later date

Everything looked fine. I was running the native resolution for the notebook's screen (1600 by 1050, or something in that ballpark). The text was easy to read. I haven't been able to do full resolution (1920x1080), but will try the next time I connect it.

Overall, this is a great unit. There were very little gripes I had about the unit. It's near flawless. Some say the XBR6 quality is the same. I unfortunately didn't have the luxury of a XBR6 and XBR7 side by side for a true comparison. To save a few bucks, I'd recommend checking out the XBR6 also. The only difference that MIGHT exist is a 8bit (XBR6) versus 10bit (XBR7) panel... but Sony never indicates what the XBR6 actually has. Rumors have it that they both use 10bit panels and it's just hidden in the XBR6 documentation so the XBR7 will have a larger arsenal to market with.

I've held off on buying a 1080P set until I could get what I wanted, and not just get what was just within my generally limited price range. My spouse set the size limit at 40" because of the room size (I would have pushed for a 46" but in marriage you have to choose your battles...) When I've gone to Costco or Best Buy the Sony Bravia XBR series has always stood out. Since my television sets generally last me 15-20 years, I wanted the most up-to-date version of the best I could get.

The color and definition of what I have seen on the set so far are wonderful. Razor-sharp imagery has always been important to me, both in my years as a film exhibitor and as a photographer. One of the first things I checked out on the new set is one of the "Planet Earth" Blu-Ray discs -dependably gorgeous and detailed. Next, a Blu-Ray disc of 1938 "The Adventures of Robin Hood". The definition holds in the action scenes when men and horses are streaming across the screen, while the sense of dimensionality is frequently beyond what would have been technically possible with the best film printing and exhibition at the time the film was made. Then I looked at a standard definition disc of an early 1940s comedy (Criterion's edition of "Heaven Can Wait"); the upscaled presentation on this television set is beautiful. I grew up on nitrate prints from the UCLA film archive; for the first time since then I feel like I can see film imagery with a comparable (or better) sharpness and luster. As great as this set will be for HBO High Definition broadcasts and Blu-Ray discs, this is also a cinephile's dream television set for something like the new Fox release of Murneau and Borzage silent films due out next week.

I'm thrilled. This was worth the wait.

Everyone seem to start a review with " i don't usually write reviews" but honestly i don't.

I am an IT guy and i love electronics. Music and tv are my passion and this is why i decided to write about this tv, because i care.

Now as far as the 40-xbr7

Looks: Wow the most gorgeous, slickest TV i have ever seen.

Sound: Great sound even though i am planning to get a high end surround system later on this year.

Picture quality: I am very happy with the deep levels of black on this set. I like the work that 120hz does with the 3 different types of settings it has ( even though you can't chose a 120Hz ON or OFF option per say)I have ATT U-Verse which i absolutely despise and i think offers the worst quality of picture to day and i can't wait to change it. Having that said, the xbr7 has a ten times better quality then the 37" Visio that i have right next to it.

Overall positives: Great deep black levels, unbelievably warm colors, tons of options to adjust the quality of the picture, excellent gui etc etc.

Negatives: there is white "halo" on both top corners of the TV when changing channels and the screen is all black. This got me worried in the beginning and i hope it will not get worst in the future but for now it is just a minor detail. ( i don't know if the warranty will cover it or not"

Would i recommend it to a friend?

Yes i would.

Would i recommend it to a family member?

Of course i would.

Conclusion: Overall a great TV that does a very good job with regular channels and a superb job with HD channels. For the amount of $ that i purchased the TV it is well worth it. Ah and one more time: if you learn anything from this review besides the fact that this TV is just as good as it looks, Learn from my mistake and don't get ATT U-verse because you will definitely regret it.

---------

Update:

I have had the TV for few months now and it has surpassed my expectations. My primary objective was to find a tv that will do a good job at non HD channels and boy did i find one. I changed the Cable provider and now i have Cox. What can i say i still keep on smiling when i look at every channel wether it is HD or not because the quality is just superb.

Even the "Halos" "Clouds" they just disappeared and i have not seen them for over a month now. I would definitely give it a 5 star without any hesitation.

I love this TV and i would not hesitate to buy it again in a heartbeat and i am glad i stuck with Sony brand.

I bought this TV on March 2nd and it was delivered on March 9. Ceva did a good job, but the guy told me that he wasn't supposed to help me to mount the TV on my stand. Whatever the TV picture is spectacular; there are no words to describe exactly the picture quality, I live in a condominium where the TV signal from Comcast is free, the picture quality is great but note that you get 3 different kinds of signal when you have cable; analog, digital 480 and HD 1080i and the analog and digital makes a big difference, I repeat a big difference, now HD channels are awesome, completely breathtaking incredible....and Then I connect my indoor HD amplified Terk antenna and that's almost another word the image is perfect , incredible perfect. But the day after I received my TV I found on the hallway one of the cable company techs and I asked him about the signal quality from his company and we started talking about their service, the guy was very nice telling me ...never order cable service if you have a HD TV only use Satellite company , because the quality it's so obvious , he told me that the cable signal lose quality thru the cable instead of satellite everything is thru the air and the signal is 100% digital and 100 % HD. That's why I'm ordering direct TV. But I do recommend this TV to anyone looking for the best TV and the best quality TV, why I put it this way? Because I started doing my research to buy a TV like 6 months ago and I found that the best picture quality is with Samsung series 600,700 and 800. BUT there is so many complaining about quality, like features that doesn't work as promised, the frame peeling off etc etc and Sony Bravia processors make the image looks so great in standard signal or HD. BECAUSE when you are shopping around for a HD TV in your local stores note that almost all TVs looks great, almost every single one have great picture , WHY? Because those are connect to a HD air antenna, Satellite or Blu ray (which those 3 are HD signals) but when you take it home, the history is 100 % different because in the real world we don't have all the channels in HD the majority are standard digital signal. That's why a good TV and a good TV processor are extremely important, the capacity of the TV to make those standard definition channels look like HD channels, most of the HD TVs now, the picture looks excellent in HD signal, but when you watch standard channels on a HD TV is the biggest test your TV will pass or not and believe me most of the TV out there look terrible in Standard definition, because the processor of the TV doesn't have the capability to upscale the signal near to 1080i. Tell the salesman to connect the TV you are interest in to an standard definition signal and you will see that he will tell you that they don't have standard definition signal in that store. And be realistic.... You can find out there a 40'' TV for 649.00 but also there some TVs that's cost $6,716.23 or like the Sony XBR7 40 that the price list is 2,100.00 but you can get it here in Amazon for 1,400.00, Why there is such price difference in TVs ? Because technology cost, you get what you pay , if you want quality you have to pay for it, if you don't believe me , look right now for the cheapest TV here in Amazon . Recapping...you want the best picture? , well my best advised for you is to go for Sony but also get ready with your wallet because their best ones are expensive. Also I bought this TV because the price was the same that the XBR6 40. And the XBR7 have even a better processor and a woofer not a sub woofer. I hope this review help you to decide..Sony Bravia XBR KDL-40XBR7 40-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV

This is an update from my previuos review and my pictures that I upload recently. Im so happy with this TV. that I have already for like 2 months. Im 100 % satisfied. two of the best features I like is that I can see my baby pictures from the USB memory stick or also my TV connected to my computer and then I can surf my diferent folders in my Pictures folder from the pc, its incredible that if my pc is off my TV will turn on my pc, I love this tv , the pictures in HD look awesome , like real life... Buy this TV , you will never regreat

We have had our Sony for a couple of weeks now and have enjoyed it very much. This is our first flat screen TV and after a lot of Internet research and multiple visits to our local brick and mortar stores we chose the 40XBR7 as the TV that best fit our needs. We decided early on that we would rather spend more money on picture quality rather than a larger screen size. We do not have cable or dish, only broadcast TV and the quality of the picture is excellent. There is no jitter or jagged edges on fast action sports, skin tones and overall color is excellent on TV dramas. The sound quality is more than acceptable with DVD movies and broadcast TV.

If you want to have the largest screen size you can afford then a 40" TV is going to be too small... but if you need to have one of the best LCD pictures available, good sound quality and Sony reliability then the 40XBR7 is a tough TV to take your eyes off of.

Panasonic DMR-E20K DVD Recorder and Player, Black

Panasonic DMR-E20K DVD Recorder and Player, Black
  • Record to DVD-R and DVD-RAM digital media
  • Time Slip Playback allows you to watch any previously recorded show while simultaneously recording from the TV
  • Direct Navigator function makes it easy to find a desired program on a heavily used disc
  • Rapid Random Access lets you jump directly to any spot on a disc and begin playback or recording immediately
  • Choose between five recording modes for better quality or longer playback; full-function DVD-Video player as well

You can record up to 6 hours on one side, then afterwards delete

unwanted sections (e.g. commercials and PBS Pledge Breaks),

The deleted parts become free to record over, at the end of the disk.

(Works like a computer disk.)

Also, Memorex makes an afforable 9.4GB disk that works on this

unit (#32025900 Double Sided DVD-RAM Type 1). (...) They need to be formated when first used, but that only takes about 1 minute (on the DMR-E20 machine).

They are equal to the more expensive brand names.

I purchased the DMR-E20s about 3 weeks ago. Let me start off by saying that you will not be sorry if you purchase this machine, it is amazing. You can record DVD-R which is playable in most current DVD players, (HOWEVER these discs can only be written to once) or you can record DVD-RAM, which is much more versatile and recorded programs can be edited without losing the time (any part of a recording that is erased is then RECOVERED in the total remaining time). Having the DVD-R option means this machine will never become obsolete even in the unlikely event that DVD-RAM does not become a popular format(one of my biggest concerns).

There are many many options, but expect to use the 2 or 4 hour speeds the most (6 hour speed is not a quality picture---to me at least!). If you are stockpiling your favorite sitcoms and want to keep them commercial free, then editing all of the commercials out of 4 half hour episodes will give you enough room for a fifth half hour episode on the disc in 2 hour mode. The setting of the timer is easy because VCRplus is included on the unit. You turn the unit off to "set" the timer to record, you dont have to put it in a "timer" mode.

The price of the discs has also dropped dramatically, but even a DVD-R at the current market price is still alot for a recording you weren't planning to keep. I hope to soon get a laptop with DVD-RAM capability so I can watch my discs on the road then ERASE and REUSE them.

As for picture quality, it is very good, however you have to have a clear sharp picture for the recorder to capture a clear sharp recording. If the broadcast is grainy, the recording will suffer and look even more grainy. But if your cable quality is good, this will be a non issue.

I bought this machine because my VCR was on its last legs (it really was a great VCR) and I just could not see myself buying outdated technology again when this amazing piece of equipment was available. It's alittle pricey, but if you are used to this kind of quality like I am, nothing less will do.

The Memorex 9.4 GB double sided DVD-RAM is an VERY VERY ECONOMICAL alternative to the other brands ... I have 4 of the Memorex 9.4 double sided discs. The only problem I noticed was the little sliding door on the cartridge will sometimes stick when it is being loaded into the machine. I could imagine that because of their fantastic price (usually being less than 15 bucks each), that maybe Memorex is still working out all the quality control bugs, but in my experience with all of the different discs I have used none has refused to format. I seriously doubt this problem would be caused by the machine itself.

Someone mentioned a PANASONIC DVD-RAM not formatting. That might be because there is an older generation of DVD-RAM out there---easily recognized by the size (2.6 GB single sided and 5.2 GB double sided) that are from an earlier version of DVD-RAM, and these are NOT compatible with this new unit, which only accepts 4.7 GB single sided and 9.4 GB double sided discs.

Have had my 2nd DMR-E20S for about 2 months now. This unit formats perfectly, unlike my first one (See my 1st post>April 20, 2002). If you have a unit that doesn't format correctly, return/exchange it! You spent a Lot of $$$ on the recorder and if you're gonna spend your $$$ on something-Get a unit that works perfectly {You deserve and are entitled to a Completely working unit, John P.} I don't use 6 hour mode. My 3 year old Panasonic S-VHS records a better quality picture than the DMR-E20S 6 hour mode does. 4 hour mode is what I use most for everyday recording, very good quality. Picture quality in 1 hour & 2 hour mode is excellent. I can only give this product 3 stars because of it's price, the Total lack of a Response by Panasonic's Supp. Dept. to my Call(s) and you Must have very good finger control to use the Joystick Control on the remoteforget it if you have any arthritis! Be aware that some units don't Format properly or at all! And don't count on Panasonic for help!! I read somewhere on the Web that something like 3 other companies are coming out with their own DVD-Recorders > Check out the new Philips DVDR985 Progressive-Scan DVD Recorder and the others before you buy a Panasonic.

When I first purchased the Panasonic DMR-E20, its performance was excellent. Picture quality was outstanding. The only negative comment at this time was the "way over complicated switch actions required" for different functions and the silly joy stick on the remote control. But soon, the switch actions became second nature and all was well. For awhile. When the unit was three months old, I discovered it would no longer play RAM discs I recorded on this unit. When I questioned Panasonic tech support on this, I never received a reply. Thinking it was a flaw with RAM discs, I switched to DVD-R discs. At five months, the unit would no longer record on those either. The unit just shuts off with no error code. Still have not receive a reply from Panasonic tech support. Last night, I ran a complaint report on this unit and discovered this is a common read failure with the DMR-E20. The unit is still under warranty and I'm sending it back for repair/replacement. I understand that DVD recorders are new and I expected some bugs with the new machines. What I didn't expect was the lack of support or answers from Panasonic. Due to this, I can not recommend the Panasonic DMR-E20 as a good buy. 2 stars, buy at your own risk.

I had the same format problem as "Reviewer: An Electronics Fan March 23, 2002 review" and called up Panasonic. (Could only format 2 out of 15 Memorex DVD-RAM 9.4GB Disks, then bought a "Panasonic DVD-RAM Disk" and that wouldn't format either!!) Phone Tech. said only problem people have called about is how to set unit up. Figuring it was a fluke, I returned the unit and ordered another which should be here by April 23. Unfortunately, I didn't see the other review until just now. A "Fluke" or a "Machine which should be Recalled"? I'll know in a couple days. BTW Still have not heard Anything from Panasonic about this problem, going on 4 weeks now.
