Picture quality is poor. Color quality is poorer. Video is very blocky. For motion to be fluid, the video must disply at 17 fps. This camera appears to display at about 5 frames per second. The IR night vision is good to about 10 ft. Beyond that, depends on how reflective an object is. All of the above observations were made with the camera 6 ft from the reciever.

This is a CMOS camera. Now days you can buy a CCD camera (far superior in every way) for the same price or just a little more.

One positive note. The wireless range seems to be ok. I have used it at a range of over 200 ft with the camera outside and the reciever inside the house where the signal had to pass through several walls. Signal strenght was 4 of 5 at that range. The afore mentioned picture, color and video qualities were unchanged from 6 ft to 200 ft.

Decent system for the price. However, the camera mounts are extremely limited in your mounting options. The mounts in my opinion limit you to only a couple camera angle options, and in some installations I could see the mount having to be replaced with one that would allow you to mount the camera properly. Also ZMODO, why would you not at least include one or two Video Surveillance warning signs or decals in the box? That way when you have it installed you can be ready to go legally. Not having to order in or go purchase a sign off the get go, I can understand not sending a dozen signs in the box, but at least one or two would be of some help. The quick setup instructions are lacking, but if you have a day to kill and want to read the included complete owners and setup manual you have that option available to you as well. It's okay for the price, and with the camera's and warning signs in place hopefully it is more of a deterrent than a system I will have to call upon if needed.

Wow, you could use this for many things the designer probably didn't intend (or probably imagine). I am using it to connect my PC to my home theater receiver, and while I know that, like many things in life (I have been assured) size doesn't matter, when it comes to fiber optic... I wanted something substantial, not to mention red, to run along the wall in case there was another vacuum related incident, I mean if I somehow catch this with the vacuum I probably had one too many adult beverages, and you know what they say, friends don't let friends clean drunk... this is a solid cable, and quite attractive, not as attractive as the price, I mean, I have found cables half the thickness for twice the price (one went in my vacuum, but that is another story), get it, you wont be sorry, unless you are colorblind, then it probably wouldn't be a good choice for you!

Unit turned off after 5 seconds. Internal battery would not charge. Manual impossible to understand. Ended up getting a Vacron for $300. After looking at other dashboard cameras, it appears that you won't get anything reliable until you get into the $300 range. The $29-$59 dashboard cameras all appear to be junk. Some people apparently get them working, but the vast number of bad reviews on most of them should have been a warning.

Suggest getting dashboard cameras that record in H.264 rather than AVI. AVI is "freeware" whereas for H.264, the manufacturer had to pay for that software which suggests that the rest of the system is equally high quality. If you don't really need a dashboard camera, any of them will work, but if you really want one you can depend on, you'll have to step up...

Just got it today. So far its working great. It took a little to learn the functions, nothing difficult. At the 640 setting the picture is clear, can read plate numbers. So far I'm impressed. I'm using a 2gig card, and am recording a total of 16 min in loop mode. I've ordered a larger card. So far I'm very happy, I will update after more testing. Thus far I would give the pic a 8, the sound a 6, and the mount a 5. At this point I would recomend this to a friend.

Digital Foci Picture Porter 35 PPR-350 500GB Digital Photo Manager with 3.5-Inch LCD Display

I found the Digital Foci very simple to learn to use. I like that you can see thumbnails of the images, titles and some of the metadata. Very simple and quick to download a couple of hundred images from a 16 GB Compact Flash Card to the device and then download them to the computer when I got home. I bought the device so that I wouldn't have to carry my heavy laptop with me on trips. I highly recommend this device.

Bravo! This does the job when it comes to backing up and copying compact flash cards on the go. For added assurance, you can display the images on the built-in screen. The size is a tad on the large side, but still light and portable; build quality is OK; the screen is functional (though text is not very readable and looks like a badly resized bitmap); you can power it from a USB port; it has a battery; it works with NEF files amongst others; the UI is straightforward, functional and mostly consistent. All in all it just works. It would be nice if it could recognize memory card serial numbers or some such thing and do incremental backups without the user having to remember and select the right destination folder. And it would be nice if it was smaller. But in the category of "backup compact flash cards on the go" there's nothing to beat it, as far as I can tell. Update: I used the device on and off. After a while it died. Then it miraculously recovered, but the hard disk was corrupted. After reformatting the drive, it worked again, but repeatedly shut down in the middle of transfers. Turns out that the device does not support fast / UDMA compact flash card. It stands to reason that if you're in the market for a half-terabyte device of backup, you're probably going to be using high speed cards, right? The description now says "Note that some high-speed UDMA CF cards are not compatible. Typically, cards rated as 200x or 30MB/s or higher will not be compatible." and I'm pretty sure it didn't say that when I bought it. In any event given these reliability and compatibility problems, my Picture Porter is now a doorstop and I'll see whether I can cut my losses by returning it to Amazon.

Life as a photographer in the field has changed for me. Previously, I would take along my 64GB iPad 3G and a Digital Foci PST-251 250GB Photo Safe II on a photo shoot. The Photo Safe II would provide image backup and in studio input support for my photos. The iPad would be used with the Camera Connection Kit to view my CF cards images while in the field.

Sadly, that is no longer possible. Without warning, Apple has downgraded the iPad in IOS 4.2.1 so that many CF card readers no longer are recognized by the iPad. This is a result of the iPad's power limitation having been drastically curtailed.

With an upcoming photo shoot scheduled for early next week, I was in a fix. I sat here this morning trying to find a way around this nasty iPad limitation. Every CF reader that I used issued the same complaint from the iPad--too much power required for the device. So my collection of CF card readers proves rather useless.

I happen to own a brand new Picture Porter 35. I absolutely love the device, but in all candor, the LCD image quality, while useful, isn't quite good enough for client viewing in the field. So that option didn't seem to be feasible.

Just when I thought that all must be lost, on a lark, I took a CF card and used the Digital Foci Picture Porter 35 to copy the entire CF card's images to a formatted SDHC card. I then placed the SDHC card in the iPad's Camera Connection kit. The iPad immediately recognized the SDHC card and began importing the images.

This product is an absolute life saver. Now if I could only find a way to connect the Picture Porter 35 to my iPad...

I had a previous 80GB model, so was surprised that this newer one is considerably slower booting and responding. If you don't need the larger storage capacity, I recommend the older style if you can find it. That said, this is the best unit for digital photographers who travel for weeks at a time. It is easy to use and the display, though not very good definition, lets you know what you have in the can.

Also I'm very pleased with their Customer Service Dept. They repaired mine (I dropped it on pavement without the case on) for a reasonable fee and fast turn-around time.

I purchased this product on January 1, 2011. It has never worked properly. File transfers from my laptop to the unit crash before they complete. This often results in the hard drive becoming corrupted, requiring it be formatted again and me starting from scratch. My photos require 300GB of space. This unit has a 500GB hard drive. What's the point of having that available space, if you can't get your photos on to it?!?! During the past year I have tried everything as time allowed. I updated the firmware. I turned screen saver and auto-shutdown off. I tried it with the unit connected directly to my several different laptops. I have tried it with the unit connected to several different powered hubs, using several different USB cables from several different manufacturers. I have tried it when the unit is "cold", i.e. just turned on. I have tried it when the unit has been running for a while. I have tried it on battery power without the AC adapter attached. I have tried it with a different battery in it. Finally, I got around to e-mailing tech support a few days ago. They suggested I update the firmware. I already had. They suggested trying with the AC power connected. I had and have again. They suggested re-formatting the drive and trying again. I have and did again. I came home this afternoon to find the unit had crashed again during the file transfer I started when I left this morning. I haven't checked yet, but likely the hard drive is corrupted again. Since this product is not reliable, I cannot trust it with my photos. I wasted my money on it. I have wasted countless hours trying to get all of my photos transferred to it. Insanity is repeating the same thing over and over and getting the same results. I am not that insane, so I am done with this product. Like another reviewer said, it will now be a door stop. Do yourself a favor. DO NOT purchase it. I should be able to give it 0 stars.

WOW! I left for dinner tonight at 8:00 p.m. When I got home at about 10:00 p.m. my Picture Porter display indicated it was still connected. That was about 1-3/4 hours longer than it had ever stayed connected before. Trouble is, I shut my computer down when I left for dinner!

The video is clear to me and the sound is good, This Dash Cam is very easy to use, I wanted a HD camera to record both side of the road to capture these beautiful scenery of British Columbia during summer and fall without spending a lot of money. The swappable memory card on top is very convenient to change to save the videos. So far I get almost 9 hours of continues recording in 720P HD resolution from a 32GB memory, But you have to be careful not to touch the lenses or you have to clean them often, also its feels like a delicate equipment that may shatter when dropped.

Great camera for the price, small, compact and truly plug and play. I just plug the car charger to the lighter and starts recording. The remote controller should be re-labeled to OFF only, because its only turns off the unit but not ON. The rotatable lens is very handy so if you see something on the either side of the road or if you want to record when you get pulled over, its easy to rotate the cameras to point and shoot.

I love it so far. I have to merge both day time recording and 9PM dusk in one video to upload both scene. It looks like Amazon lowers the resolution to fit the file.

Failed miserably within the first hour but the vendor refunded the money. It worked for a little while and it was neat to have a dual screen adjustable dash cam. However, within the first hour the left screen developed a huge, green band down the side and the right screen flickered constantly. I would not recommend this product, but the vendor was fair even though it two-plus weeks to get refund.

I love this MP3 player. The only difference between it and the Ipod touch are the Apps and about $150 in the price. This player works smoothly with both itunes and windows media, and is a snap to upload music to. One thing to note is that it holds it's charge much better if you charge it through the USB port on your computer tower, and not through the USB port on a cable box or other things. The sound is much better with a pair of quality earphones, like Skull Candy. Bought this in November on another site, and so far no issues. If your player doesn't work properly, I suggest returning it for a new one. Every product has it's bad apples. I highly recommend this player.

Weak touchscreen, feels really cheap... but then again it was.

Music plays fine, havnt had any lag or quality problems. Built in speaker works well, nothing special but about standard built-in speaker quality. Camera is better than I thought it would be. Overall its a decent product, works well for music and video, navigation does not flow as well as i would like but is still pretty intuitive. Good price for a touchscreen with a camera, but only get it if you dont mind the lack of quality.

Compared to the Chinese imports (Apex, Initial, Cyberhome, etc.), the Panasonic DVD-LS5 is definitely a premium model, and both the price and quality show. If you just want to watch DVDs on the road and don't mind teeny sound or blocky images, the low-end models will serve you well. In fact I love my 8-inch Initial. On the other hand, if you want to truly enjoy a mobile DVD experience, you gotta buy this product.

Better styling and build quality aside, the Panasonic has at least three significant advantages over non-Japanese players: 1) the screen is clearer and offers better viewing angles horizontally, so you can share the joy of DVD with another person; 2) the sound is just incredibly loud for a small player like this, unlike the low-end players -in fact it feels almost like surround sound in a quiet room; 3) the tilting mechansim is really cool and allows you to adjust the screen angle freely.

The battery snaps to the back (and raises the player a bit) and offers a little over 2 hours of viewing pleasure. All considered, the Panasonic player is also much more portable than the other ones; even with the battery installed we are talking something you can just grab and watch, as opposed to carrying in two hands.

Is the Panasonic worth the extra money over the other players? I definitely think so.

For Christmas this year I decided on a portable DVD player as my present. I dont travel very much but I LOVE technology so I figured why not, and so began my quest. I went to various online sites and eventually went out to my local electronics stores to do some research and to see the different players. I visited the usual Wal-Mart and Target, which had decent amount of relatively inexpensive portables on display but none of which were working models. I went to BestBuy to find 3 models on the floor. The one which price wise, was close to the Panasonic, was a Toshiba sd-p1200. It was HORRIBLE, it looked like an Etch-A-Sketch playing a DVD. The other two models, one a Poloroid that wouldnt work, and the other a Mintek which like the Poloroid wouldnt work, looked very cheaply put together and not worth the money. So I decided to move on to Circuit City. Once there I came across this wonderful little DVD player. The Panasonic DVD-LS5. I didn't want something clunky or bulky, and this player fit the bill. It is about the size of a portable CD player. The screen resolution is amazing. It is like a nice LCD computer monitor (albeit a small one). But with just over 500 lines of resolution and a 5 inch widescreen display, it does the DVD's justice. It is lightweight and very quiet. I played two movies back to back (Terminator 3 and Indiana Jones and the last Crusade) and this bad boy didnt even work up a sweat. The entire unit stayed cool and whisper quiet 4 hours after I first turned it on. I used wall power as my battery was not charged yet. Later on I used the battery and got through one 2 hour movie. So the description of 2 hours per charge is accurate. It only takes 2 hours to charge the battery back up and since it is a lithium ion battery there is no need to fully discharge the battery. The swivel screen function is really very cool. It allows you to watch a movie in classic portable dvd player fashion (like opening a book) or you can adjust the height and tilt, or you can completely compact the unit by laying the screen flat on the player. Little rubber wheels on the bottom of the screen prevent the screen from scratching the player. Panasonic has thought of everything. I only paid $299 for mine and at that price I almost felt like I stole it! It is an amzing little machine that has phenominal sound too. I am a radio dj so I am all about sound. When the headphones are plugged in.. WOW!!!... I've heard sounds on the portable that I never heard on my full size DTS home theater system! The bottom line is, if you on a quest for a solid portable system, the quest ends here. I know that it is a little pricy, but considering some of the other models out there that are shotty construction and hit or miss as far as it working or not, for the money (and it was well spent money), the Panasonic DVD-LS5 is at the top of its class!

After reading all the other reviews on Amazon and looking at everything in a few of New York City's major electrical stores (J&R, Circuit City, Best Buy) I bought the Panasonic DVD-LS5 portable DVD player for $329 from Amazon.

It was the most streamline and compact, solid feeling, good looking and highly recommended DVD player of this size. The screen looked sharper and brighter than it's competitors including larger much more expensive models.

6 months later, several friends and colleagues have fallen in love with this portable DVD player and after doing their own due dilligence, all chose the same model. Panasonic really seem to have gotten it right and the premium one pays for this consistently strong and reliable brand is well worth the money.

Size? I travel a great deal and wanted a very good tough small well made machine for around $350. The LS5 fits the bill and seems to stand alone in it's corner of the market. Larger portable DVD players start approaching the size of a small laptop and cost around $600 and up. Moreover, this model is perfect for a tray table even when the seat in front is reclined in your face. Ideal for the back of a car. Sits on my knee in the airport lounge. In hotel rooms I either connect my DVD player to the TV using the supplied cables or usually prefer it's crisp clean screen and awesome headphone sound.

Extras? The battery gives just over 2 hours of juice basically one movie plus change. I recommend people buy an additional battery: Panasonic's CGR-H601A/B extended life battery is good for an extra 3-4 hours (a very reasonable $69 especially considering most batteries cost more than a hundred bucks).

Sound? The headphone sound is absolutely amazing and the external speakers in such a tiny machine can't match their sophisticated range and power. So I recommend a really good pair of headphones don't skimp the sound is incredible! I can hear a depth and nuance in a movie's soundtrack and dialogue which I've never noticed before. A headphone splitter is a very good idea. Additionally I recently bought Sony's small and highly touted SRS-T55 travel speakers ($47.50) so that a small group could join the fun. Two or three people can all view equally well without losing quality from being off centre.

I'm not much of an electronics wiz/enthusiast but I really love this machine. I do lots of travel by train and air and this device has been my constant companion for the past three months. I find I don't have much of a chance to watch the movies I want to watch at home (4 kids ages 2-15 tend to keep you busy) so investing in a portable DVD player was a must if I was ever going to see a real movie again. The picture quality is quite good, I'd recommend buying a good pair of headphones (good sound quality and comfortable!) since you'll need it if you're out in public.

I have had the Panasonic DVD-LS5 for two months now. It is awesome! I did alot of research and decided to go with the Panasonic. I got it for $198 after using the Amazon Visa for $30 off and $50 rebate and then a $50 Promotional certificate. I couldn't beat that price. I basically have to agree with all the positive details everyone else has written because I would just be repeating all of their findings. I do have one story to mention. My daughter and her friend brought both of their portable DVD players on a trip. His was a Cyberhome and if you read the reviews on that one I can tell you the Cyberhome did everything they said it would do also. It froze, skipped, and had no picture but had sound. Cyberhome may be cheaper with a carkit included but the Panasonic can't be beat. They ended up using the Panasonic and put the Cyberhome away. I just smiled.I was glad I did my homework. I did receive the carkit charger it was $125. I thought it was rather expensive but the quality is excellent and the cord goes from the lighter to the back of the van. Can't beat that. The Picture is just as clear as if it were hooked up to a/c. We are thoroughly enjoying it hooked up to our TV also. Thanks again.

I was hesitant to purchase this product based upon some of the reviews that I read about it being buggy and freezing and things such as that, but I did anyway because it seemed that it would do exactly what I wanted for a good price.

Before making my purchase, I read reviews on this site as well as a troubleshooting forum and determined that most of the problems being experienced were user error and could be avoided.

When I received the package I immediately opened it and started looking through the manual for the portions that pertained to me and how I was going to use the remote. I entered the codes given for my listed devices and tested them. My TV however didn't have a listed code, but the instructions on how to find a devices frequency worked flawlessly and my TV was programmed with basic functionality within minutes. I had all of my devices (Technics receiver, Sony DVD, Phillips Tivo, and Sansui TV) all working on the remote within an hour.

Since I have had the remote about a month I have continually tweaked the functions of the devices controlled, often times using learning from my OEM remote to the Remote Commander (RMAV3100) and and continually satisfied with it's performance.

I upgraded my receiver to a Harman Kardon AVR series and have changed the AMP functionality over to it instead of the Technics. Just entering the code for the device didn't give me everything that I wanted to control with the remote, but with a little thought, tweaking, and remote learning I have programmed it to do everything and I no longer use the OEM remotes unless it's to learn a buttons function.

Information that I gleaned from forums to avoid problems:

When you change the batteries, remove all of the old ones and throw them away. Wait at least 20 seconds before installing any batteries. Then replace the batteries with all new and fresh AA's.

I did have the remote freeze up when I hit a newly learned button from the new receiver. When this occurred I removed the backing, removed the batteries, and waited 2 minutes before replacing them, just to be safe. Then I started the remote back up, deleted the offending button, relearned it, and have had no problems whatsoever since then.

I was disappointed. I should have spent more time searching for user reviews of this model and its predecessor. Briefly, pre-program commands were limited, the unit froze occasionally during programming, the buttons were not backlit, and the touch panel, although adjustable, didn't have sufficient contrast.

While the remote can be programmed to handle almost any piece of equipment, the pre-programmed equipment codes are limited. For those that are present, common commands were sometimes missing for my non-Sony equipment. For non-Sony equipment, no separate on and off commands were included.

The component selector buttons are pre-programmed with Sony codes. If your piece of equipment is not listed, it is best to clear the equipment selector button completely before learning the commands from your equipment's remote, as apposed to replacing the Sony commands on one by one basis using the learning function.

The manual is tedious but thorough. An overview of the steps needed to program the remote would have reduced frustration. If you haven't programmed a remote, plan on investing some quiet hours reading the manual.

Occasionally, the unit completely froze while erasing learned key commands or groups. Freezing was common during erasure of learned commands assigned to the remote's volume up and down buttons or the buttons in the ring shaped grouping. Battery removal/re-insertion cleared the freeze. Repeating the operation repeated the freeze. Erasing an entire group, such as TV, without erasing all the learned commands within the group sometimes froze the unit. Erasing all the learned commands within the TV group individually, before clearing the TV button, eliminated the freeze problem but the TV button then refused to accept a new equipment code. Clearing the ENTIRE remote proved necessary to resolve the problem.

On one occasion the unit froze when a button for a learned command was pushed. Clearing the entire remote was required was required to eliminate the problem.

After finding these defects, I found a user forum where users of earlier Sony models had complained about the same things. In my opinion, this new model is truly defective and should be taken off the market until fixed. Alternatively, these defects should be included in Sony's product literature so the public knows before they buy. If you buy one, I suggest you write your planned key assignments and macros down first. Do not attempt do to anything "on the fly" or you won't know what to avoid if the unit freezes.

At one point if I wanted to see a movie or watch TV or do anything else with my system I had to go through a tedious process of (finding! then) using up to 5 different remotes. Although each of my components had a "Universal" remote, I could change the volume with one, but not skip forward. Or change the channels but not turn anything off. Having a row of 5 remotes set up in front of me got a bit too tedious.

Months later, I can say that I would miss not having this remote around. It does everything I want it to, and it can do more.

The challenge is learing how to use it. Prepare yourself for a morning alone with your system, this remote, and the manual. It would help to have a laptop nearby so you can check for quick ideas online. It took me over two hours to do it correctly, and I consider myself pretty technologically advanced. Once it was set, I didn't ever really have to think about it again. Even changing the batteries was a snap. Take the old ones out, put the new ones in, all the settings remain.

I've seen this in big electronics stores for $200. At that price, it's not a very good value. At half the price, it's a great addition to your HT system and it will make the times you want to sit down and just watch the game a lot easier. It could use some extra features, but it does what it is supposed to do very well.

I bought this remote despite what I had read concerning setup, etc... Most of my components are Sony so I assumed that it would be a slam dunk as far as programming. The remote is supposed to be pre-programmed for all Sony products. It did not however control my Sony receiver (985). It was easy to have the 3100 learn the commands if you have your original remote.

I was disappointed that I had to program it for my PVR. You would think in this day and age the codes would be out there.

I did eventually get the remote to control all of my components, but ran out of patience trying to get the system control macros to control the misc functions.

I recently purchased the Logitech 659. It really is a much easier product to program and adjust. I would take a look at it before purchasing the Sony.

Preamble: I originally purchased a Harmony 659, it has interface to Internet, it's easy to use, well that's what all the reviews said. Anyway, Web interface was a pain and had it set up after a lot of hassle; it couldn't handle my Sony Multiple Play DVD, couldn't handle by Panasonic TV properly, and the multiple componants/system option always ended up turning off the wrong componants. And lets be honest trying to read that tiny screen to determine where I was was ridiculous, plus other problems stopped using it after a day.

Forward to last week: saw the new Sony NX7000 (500+ bucks no thank you, but lets check out the rest). Checked reviews on Amazon for the 2500 and the 3100 many people claimed hard to program, limited codes no PC interface, hangs doesn't sound to good really. Checked out remotecentral.com, very detailed review and cnet (this was the previous AV3000), interestingly punters like it better that the editor (who likes the previously mentioned 659!). So I was a bit skeptical at those reviews that really liked it and said how they had it up and running in 1 hour or so. Hmmm, Checked remotecentral.com in detail, and given the Amazon price thought I'd have another go at a 'Universal' Remote.

Well, I really did have it up and running with all my components, including programming the remote I bought for my Ipod, in less than an hour. And no hangs! Couldn't believe it absolutely ecstatic. Other remotes now in spare room in a box!

Upsides:

Bargain Look at the that Amazon price!

Down sides:

Screen contrast not too hot, but useable.

This DVD player was a perfect choice. We were looking to replace our old DVD player because it fritzed out and wasn't playing any of our Netflix videos, much less, any of our home ones. The price was right and I gotta tell ya it was a really good buy. It plays well on our flat screen and the picture is amazing. Not as amazing as the Blu-ray, but, much better than regular t.v. We had simple integration with our home theatre system as well. Overall this was an excellent value for our money.

At first, we couldn't figure out why it was playing our widescreen movies at full screen, but figured out that we had to stop the movie and reset our TV type in the DVD menu, and that fixed it.

It works fine for us. We have a non-digital TV and just want something to play our movies.

The DVD player is claimed to give you near HD picture. I compared to my HD signal from my cable provider and the DVD player does not compare. I am not sure how they can make this claim, most likely they found a technical way to legally claim this but I wouldnt buy this player expecting anything near the HD quality of a 1080i (and obviously not 1080p) output. Overall it is a good buy though. Looks good, slim, light. Good buy for the price.

Though technically correct, it has very small remote control with small buttons spaced out only 9 mm (less than 3/8 inch) horizontally and 10 mm (13/32 inch) vertically quite difficult for pressing with fingers even of average thickness of men in Europe or USA. It is lacking fast forward and reverse speeds between 4X and 64X, of which 8X and 16X are very useful, needed, and desired. It also does not have the search function and it does not show the total play time or remaining play time on its poor display. The graphical interface (menus) is substandard and scant. All together, it is poorly designed player though functional and quite sturdy. By far the worst is the remote control.

Instead, Toshiba SD4200 offers a better remote, but Toshiba SD7300 has an ergonomic remote, richness of functions, intelligent menus, and a legible display.

Does the job, but with little kids the remote is hard to keep track of sometimes. The unit does not have FF/RW buttons on it, so apaprt from loading the dvd everytime and sitting through the previews it is a good little player for the money. TAPE THE REMOTE SOMEWHERE SAFE!! :)

Hauppauge WinTV DCR-2650 Dual Tuner Cable Card TV Tuner

I just received this tuner today, and have had it running for about four hours, so I will edit if I encounter any issues in the next few weeks.

Preliminary review good tuner for its price range. If you don't need the four tuners in the Ceton InfiniTV, or the three tuners in the SiliconDust HDHomeRun Prime, this two-tuner box from Hauppauge is worth the look. As for me, I already had a card for ClearQAM, so I didn't really need more than two tuners. HD quality on my HTPC is equal to the quality from the cable company DVR (which is going back tomorrow!).

First things first don't even mess with the CD in the box, download the latest software and firmware directly from Hauppauge. The firmware has been updated at least twice in the last two weeks, and will probably be updated quite frequently as more features are added.

Following the instructions in the box, installation went smoothly. I did encounter a bit of a hiccup in getting my CableCard activated, but it is a known issue with activating CableCard equipment on Cox's network (short version just ask the tech to send two "cold hits" to your box, about five to ten minutes apart it seemed to work for me).

If your cableco uses SDV / tuning adapters, you may want to wait Hauppauge is still working on getting tuning adapter support. However, I don't, so it was a non-issue for me.

You'll probably want to run a clean line to this box no splitters just to make sure you have sufficient strength and quality of signal.

Overall, my early impression from this box is very favorable. If it continues to work well, I will be recommending that all my friends abandon the cable company DVR and build their own HTPC's.

EDIT 11/8/2011: I've been using the WinTV-DCR-2650 for about two months now. In that time, Hauppauge has released several firmware and driver updates, and the tuner appears to be quite stable now. In the two-month period, I did miss one recording, but that was due to issues with Windows Media Center moreso than the tuner (the tuner and WMC didn't communicate very well on whether I could record a "copy once" flagged channel); the issue was resolved by reconfiguring WMC. If two tuners are sufficient for your needs or you are using in combination with a QAM tuner, I continue to recommend this tuner.

EDIT 3/3/2012: Almost six months since I bought this tuner, and I still highly recommend it. By my calculations, it will have paid for itself in another month over Cox DVR rental rates. The firmware has been stable for about three months.

I bought this mainly for the price... it was $75.00 cheaper than the HD Homerun Prime by Silicon Dust. It has one less tuner (2 instead of 3) and lacks the network sharing feature of the HD Homerun. Basically, you plug it into the wall, and connect it to your computer (via USB). Then plug a coax in for your cable line. You have to have an M-Card from your cable company. I have Comcast in South Jersey and I was able to go to my local Comcast office and pick up a cablecard free of charge.

Once you plug everything in, you go into Media Center and run through the setup. At one point during the setup, you'll get a screen with three numbers that you have to give to Comcast to activate the card. There's a self-install line that you should call instead of the general number. It's mentioned in another review on here, so search the reviews for Comcast and you should find it.

After I called, I completed the setup in Media Center and I was good except I didn't get any of my premium channels. A follow-up call the same day resolved that issue.

All-in-all, the device worked well for the first few days. Eventually though, I started getting "turner unavailable" messages in Media Center on startup and also while the device had been in use for a few hours. The only solution was to unplug the unit and plug it back in. It's not that big of a deal but if you are buying this to get rid of your cable box (like me), this can get annoying.

In the end, I ended up returning it to Amazon and ordering the HD Homerun Prime. As I said, it costs more but it has an extra tuner (which is nice) and you can view it from any computer on your network (like a slingbox). I didn't think I would need more than two tuners, but if you are recording something and watching something else, you need an extra tuner if you're watching on a second computer. Also, if you want to record two things at the same time and watch tv, you need three tuners.

In sum, it works pretty well with the exception of the error that causes it to loose connection ever now and then. If you are looking for something to use in addition to your cable box (like, for instance, if you only want to use it as a DVR), this is probably your best bet, but if you're looking to replace your cable box, I'd go for the HD Homerun Prime.

Depending on your carrier and computer configuration, this device can be anywhere from plug and play, to some tinkering required. If you are willing to put in the work to set up, this is a great device. If you can follow instructions and minor tinkering does not intimidate you, you can successfully install this device. If that thought overwhelms you, this product is not for you. The device works with SDV (with a cable card and tuning adapter). I have installed with Time Warner Cable and the Hauppauge tunes every station that my cable box tunes including premium movie stations.

Start with the directions in the box. Make sure you follow them closely. Do not use the CD though. enter the following url to download the updated software from the WinTV-DCR-2650 Digital CableCARD receiver support page at . Download, unzip, run setup and execute step one and two.

Now, if you are using a tuning adapter (I am using the Motorola MTR700), you will want to enter the following url to download the tuner adapter update from the 'Tuning adapter' tab of the support page. Make sure that you follow the five steps in order.

So once that is completed you should have your cable line from the wall to your tuning adapter 'in' port and then out from your tuning adapter to your receiver. Both the tuning adapter and receiver should be connected via USB to your computer (NOT TO EACHOTHER LIKE TIVO).

At this point you should be ready to go, unless you are using an NVDIA GPU. If that is the case and you are tuning audio but no video (the infamous black screen syndrome), then you are having a driver issue. Either roll back your driver, or download the beta driver released On 1/31/12 by entering the following url (http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us) and selecting the appropriate download from Option 3. I am running the Beta Driver and it is working well.

My experience with the device so far has been very good. WMC is using 150mb of ram to run in the background or 210mb when not and very little processing power either way. Recording with both tuners simultaneously did not significantly increase ram or cpu usage.

Please note: While I am reporting smooth usage, I am running an i7 on an EVGA X58 SLI3 MB with 3x4GB of 1600mhz or ram, an EVGA GeForce GTX 550 Ti as my primary video card, and a TB allocated from a 7200rpm SATAII storage drive with 32mb cache. I am running win 7 64bit. I have no clue how this device performs on a slower system, but I am very happy with it on mine.

$2.00 cable card/tuner rental versus a $22 dvr rental, and I now have all of my channels on my computer.

Firmware fixes (2 releases in September) have made this much better, still drops occasionally, but now this with WMC is a viable HTPC and a good vendor STB replacement. Got this a a couple weeks ago, setup was easy; cable card activation a breeze. But after anywhere from 1-30 minutes tuner loses signal (tuner light flashes), WMC freezes, and the the device becomes unknown as a USB device. Half the time the PC then locks up; power cycle of both HTPC and DCR-2650 is required, but then again next time only works for ~10 minutes so wash-rinse-repeat. Opened support case, got essentially a one line response of "updated firmware." That would have been my first troubleshooting step but from 8/22-8/30 (first week I had the device) there was no updates on their support page. Firmware update (from 8/30) has NOT fixed the issue. Only saving grace is that it looks like it heavily based on the SiliconDust HDHomeRun Prime which has reports of similar experiences, and they seem to be actively pushing out beta firmware to address these issues. Hopefully Hauppauge will quickly leverage SiliconDust's work to get functional units. Has promise, but in its current state unusable. I had to break down much of my HTPC and extender infrastructure and just revert to provider issued STB to placate family.

As most of the reviews on these cable card tuners go the tuner itself works great but dealing with the cable company to get it setup was a huge pain. I had to call Comcast around 10 times before they finally got the card paired and initialized correctly at the same time. If you are a Comcast customer don't waste your time calling the normal phone number to setup your card. Call 1-877-405-2298 that is their cable card department and you get connect to a person right away. Most of them still don't seem to know what they are doing but eventually you will get bumped up to tier 2 tech support where your chances are higher. As of now I have all my digital channels working and working well. What they don't make clear in the description is this is a DIGITAL ONLY tuner so if your cable company still has some analog only channels you won't get them with this tuner. All my basic channels are still analog only so I'm going to have to buy a regular tuner so I can pick them up too. Took me a while to figure that out. On the plus side that will give me 3 tuners kind of. Channels changes are about the same speed as my Comcast box which isn't great but at least this isn't even slower. I'm using my xbox 360 as a windows media center extender and that is working well too. Once I get my analog tuner I'll be able to ditch my $18 a month comcast HD DVR box.

Just wanted to ad I installed a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-1250 to take care of my analog basic cable channels and all is working well together. Windows Media Center integrates all three tuners seamlessly. It even knows to record a show using the 1250 if the two tuners on the 2650 are busy automatically.

I bought this one because it seemed like the best value for the money. But in the end I was pretty disappointed with it. I would have thought that Toshiba was a dependable quality product but I was wrong. I ended up returning this player because it kept freezing up. It wouldn't respond to anything, even the off button, and I kept having to unplug the darn thing and plug it in to get it back to normal again. It would do this with both DVD's and CD's. This gets to be a pain in the butt when your entertainment centre weighs a couple hundred pounds and the plug is way back there behind it. I was also disappointed with the random feature. You could play 5 CD's at random but it had to be 2 songs from each CD before it would randomly pick the next. Why 2 songs? I wanted random, not pairs. Otherwise, it seemed to have great picture, but even the cheapest DVD players have great picture. I'm not sure which brand I'll move onto but I think I'll pay a bit more this time.

I have a daughter (3) whom uses (w/o assistance) the DVD player more than I use the stove. I am very unhappy with the frequent "pausing" and the problems I have ran into with several videos (the Toshiba doesn't recognize it until a power cycle...sometimes not at all). I can honestly recommend that a user looks at a different unit instead of purchasing a Toshiba. A friend has an AIWA and another a JVC, each without problems.

Good overall quality (plenty of capabilities), but the freezing conditions (1 sec to 1 min) cancel every other nice feature out.

This DVD player has changed my complete feelings regarding Toshiba, from DVD players, to laptops, to cameras...now out of the equation (still rank "slightly" above Packard Bell)

I purchased this particular machine, after I had a hellish nightmare with the Hatachi c605u (That's A diffrent story with in itself). Now I have a owned the Toshiba sd1200 dvd player for about a year, and I was very pleased. But I wanted to upgrade my home Theater system to a changer, So I decided on this model, becuase I was so use to the name of Toshiba, (and had major problems with the hatachi c605u) The Quilty of the picture was very good especially with an S-video conection. The Sound was Just amazing, (but you must have a Dolby Digital Connection via Coaxial Or Optical). But If you don't the, simmulated surround works just fine with the 2-2spactializer (thats simm 3d sound). This Means that it will sound like you have a full surround sound system with just 2 speakers. The Video connections that are; available are S-video and Componet, but even if you have an older tv the video out will work just. fine. The remote is easy to use, a little small, but that's a miner problem for such a major machine. It also plays video cd, cd-r, cd-rw. it does it all. So if you are in the market for a 5 disk changer (Just In time for the Godfather Trilogy). Then the Toshiba sd2705 is the right one for you So sit back and enjoy the show.

Other Toshiba products have performed reasonably well but this one's a dud. It's a good value featurewise but the control actions are agonizingly slow and the panel input went out after 4 months (after the labor warranty ran out). AND there's a strange sound distortion when playing half of the CD-audio discs that I've tried. Avoid.

I bought this thing approx 1 1/2 years ago for $75 here at this site . . . little did i know what a piece of junk it is.

I buy on average, 1-2 DVDs a week would bring them home, play them and 1/2 the time they wouldn't play at all (even the menu unaccessible) OR I'd watch 3/4 of the movie just fine & then the whole ending would skip through to the very end. Like an idiot not thinking, I thought I had just hit a bad pile of DVDs kept bringing them back to the store complaining . . . sometimes even 3-4x for the same exact one wondering why kind of goods these stores were receiving.

Little did I realize that the whole time, it was THIS player Toshiba is junk. My realization? The paperwork that I had just received in the mail for the CLASS ACTION SUIT that's being filed against Toshiba for just this reason . . . supposedly Toshiba KNOWINGLY made defective players that were not up to code/ standards and sold them anyhow all the people in the class action suit have all had the same playback problems, etc.

Thank God I only ate $75 compared to what some of them paid . . .

Vivitar 410 Digital Video Camera

Item pictured is actually the vivitar 410. not the dvr 925. I just ordered the supposed "dvr 925" and I received the 410.

Cons:

-has terrible video quality in both low light and daylight conditions.

-Extremely cheap build quality [plastic which is pretty much found in a little kids toy.]

-there is no protection over the lens.

EDIT: Looks like they fixed the product page and now shows the correct item.

I bought it because it was cheap. It's a great camera for the money. It's expendable for this price so I can take it anywhere without fear of damage. It can be replaced. Videos look crapy on the camera's screen, but much better of my computer.

This product is the vivitar dvr 410 not the dvr 925! It does NOT shoot 720p HD videos which was one of the features I wanted in a pocket HD camcorder. This may be good for a kid's birthday gift but is not what I was looking for. I left mine in the package. I'm going to the post office next week to return it. If you want the dvr 410 go ahead, but if you want a HD pocket camcorder DO NOT buy this.

Bottom line: throughly review what you are getting and do not get the cheapest thing out there.

Hotel TV's are always a gamble; you can end up with a 37" HD TV showing everything under the sun, or an old 20" tube TV with nothing but adverts. I stumbled on the MediaMatchBox entirely by accident when I saw it pop up at the bottom of my Amazon homepage. I have a Western Digital WD TV Live Streaming Media Player WDBHG70000NBK-HESN which gets used at home and I love. All the streaming features and networking are perfect for home use. However, it's a little bigger and because it's wired up to all my equipment at home, disconnecting everything whenever I want to take it places is just too much of a chore.

Enter the MediaMatchBox, which is tiny and fits perfectly inside the AmazonBasics Universal Travel Case for Small Electronics and Accessories (Black) which I also purchased at the same time. Everything fits perfectly inside the case:

I was really pleased to see the composite cables come with the MediaMatchBox. Not many hotels have old tube TV's, but it's nice to know I can use it with them if I have to. I purchased the HDMI cable myself, I got a 3' one which seems like it'll be long enough to get round the back of any TV while still fitting inside the case.

The menu system is basic, but functional. There wouldn't be many ways to reduce the number of clicks needed to start playing video. I really like that you can control everything from the unit itself, rather than having to rely on the remote. It's one less thing to have to carry if you don't want to. Also, it won't render your player useless if the battery in the remote dies. Speaking of the remote, it's fine, but sometimes the buttons register two presses rather than one. It's easily fixed by one of the countless $10 "learning" remotes you can buy on Amazon or in stores, but it doesn't bother me, as I use the D-pad and "OK" button on the unit itself for almost everything.

As for file compatibility, it plays everything I've thrown at it. Feel free to ask about file formats in the comments and I'll do my best to get back to you. I've also tried it with 1tb and 500gb hard drives, as well as the 32gb USB stick that I generally use and they're all fine.

I was informed by my friend that a gadget is available, which could play any damn video format. First I did not believe it, then after reading abt the product, I decided to purchase it and voila, there it is as promised it plays any damn format u throw at it. I am slightly disappointed by the remote, really need to press hard to get to function, overall the product is great.

I received my MediaMatchBox last week and I love it! All you need is an external USB flash drive or HDD to plug right in and you're in business. I recommend a plug & play drive such as a 1TB WD Passport or any size flash drive. I currently use a Kingston 64GB flash drive. It plays any file format I throw at it and it's small and compact. It even plays BD-ISO! I'm quite impressed by it's performance. My only criticism is with the remote. It sometimes takes multiple attempts at pushing the buttons for the MediaMatchBox to respond to it's commands. However, that could be due to the where the placement of the MediaMatchBox is exactly. I've used WDTV, Boxee, Dune HD and Roku before and I've enjoyed those as well, but they're quite big and bulky and a bit of an eyesore in my opinion. Those media players may offer wifi connectivity to Netflix or Hulu, but if you own a PS3, Xbox, Wii or Blu-Ray standalone player that offers those very same streaming applications then it isn't necessary. This is a simple inexpensive media player.

I searched all over the internet for a way to loop a 4 minute video on a display we host at conferences. Other solutions I found cost in the $300-$600+ range (Usually calling for the purchase of a bulky PC to drag around). The Media Matchbox 2 loops our video straight from a USB Drive, which we can easily hide behind the monitor. At $75, we worry less about it being stolen. It ended up being the perfect solution to our problem.

As a note, there was one issue I had with it at first, which we found a solution to. The repeat function displays a small 'play button' on the screen at the beginning of each loop. After poking around a bit, we discovered a 'repeat title' option which does not display the icon. After changing to this setting the looping is seamless.

Seriously though, A+ overall -small, light, valuable for the cost; runs off USB (or SD card) with a HDMI (and coaxial) outputs.

Great piece of equipment. It would be nice to have a larger remote control that worked with this unit, but once you learn the position of the keys, the remote works well. It also seems to handle all types of files used by most media enthusiasts.

Disappointed. The indicator would verify that it was charged, but the camera would never power on. Tried numerous times would plug it back in to charge more, but would never power on.

The instructions have a erroneous translations. At the time of putting into operation a second but recorded manually. the sensor does not work or does not indicate how to put the camera function automatically. simply does not work.

The instructions are hard to understand, first of all, and secondly, I haven't had a chance to use it. So I can't really give an honest account at this point.

But the company selling the product is amazing. My first purchase of the camera was a disapointment and I gave it bad reviews. A company representative contacted me and expressed his concern and wanted to make it right. I didn't want the hassle of packaging it up and resending the defective item back, so he made it very easy on me and immediately sent me one that was in working order.
