Memorex MB2190 Micro Cassette Recorder

Memorex MB2190 Micro Cassette RecorderExcellent tool from Memorex! I've had this for quite a while now and NEVER has it failed me. I've used this on trips, classrooms, photo shoots & have let my children use it for their school projects and it continues to provide service and is always a very reliable aide.

The knock on the battery usage is noted, but if you purchase the more expensive type, then it cancels the problem out. There is also the responsibility of taking the cheap batteries out when the unit is not being used. Aside from this minute hassle, the product is worth the money. Thumbs up!

MAGNAVOX DV220MW9 DVD Player VCR Combo

MAGNAVOX DV220MW9 DVD Player VCR ComboIt's a shame that a company like Magnavox, which used to put out some fine quality products, would put their nameplate on garbage like this. Bought for my 80 year old mother-in-law we found that the DVD plays and sounds fine, but the VCR is pretty much horrible. Terribly poor quality. It records only in MONO!...is ANYTHING mono anymore? And it doesn't play well with other machines. She has to blast the TV volume on any tape from another machine. That means when you turn off the player, the TV (now playing regular cable TV) is blasting. Mom-in-law jumps a foot. Many features which used to be present on VCR's are not here. No TV/VCR button to check on regular TV while watching a tape and nothing to tell you how much tape is left. No front line-in jacks for the grandchildren coming over with video games and now forced to pull out the TV to plug in their toys. And setting the timer is bewilderingly tedious...plus, mom-in-law is going crazy listening to the cacophony of noise coming from the VCR motor. Literally...whirls, squeaks and chatters...heard by her though she's going deaf. This is a 6 month old machine no less! All in all, a waste of bucks.

I understand that VCR is an archaic technology but there are a lot of older folks out there who will continue to use them...so if Magnavox doesn't mind taking their money, at least give them their moneys worth!

Just like the first reviewer said, these players are junk. Strangely, the DVD portion has excellent picture and sound, but the VCR portion audio is analog. It's taken off the linear audio track running along the edge of the tape, which is old school. So, the sound is weak and fidelity is very poor. You would think people buy a combo unit so they could still play their VHS movies. Evidently Magnavox figured people buy a combo unit because they look neat or something. The VHS portion of these players is nearly useless. Don't buy one if you plan on playing your VHS movies. Especially if they're movies with special effects or lots of music. There's no bass whatsoever, and very weak everything else. I'd rate it zero stars if I could, so that one star is way more than it deserves. I'm going to avoid any and all Magnavox products. They've shown their true colors with this unit.

Buy MAGNAVOX DV220MW9 DVD Player VCR Combo Now

I gave this a one star because there is no way to give a negative number of stars! We bought a total of 4 of these all the exact same. Less than 6 months later EVERY one of them has bit the dust. The first one the VCR went out followed by the DVD and all the others the DVDs went out. 5 months later, 4 machines and we have 1 left that the VCR works on (and not well!). 1 year warranty is a joke. The 800 number is a recording that will tell you that for that product number you have to visit the website. The website has the model number listed and when you click on it says that information is no longer available. I have kept boxes, receipts, and owners manuals and the only thing that it seems like they are going to be good for is the recycle bin! Sad that what used to be reliable brand names have fallen by the way side!

My parents bought this. When my father had trouble setting it up he asked me to try. Neither of us could find an input connection for the VCR. I finally found a notation in the manual about connecting a camcorder or other device to the recorder, but nothing about TV.

Want MAGNAVOX DV220MW9 DVD Player VCR Combo Discount?

I just got my Magnavox combo but I've already watched a couple of tapes and one DVD with none of the problems I'm reading here. Sound quality and volume on the tape is essentially the same as with the TV and the VCR motor is noiseless. I didn't have to adjust the volume when I switched from one mode to the other and the small speakers on my TV aren't exactly great for good bass no matter what. All I wanted was a machine to play my discs and tapes and this one fits the bill quite nicely so far.

It was really simple to hook it up and get it operating, the remote is easy to understand and read, and it looks tidy and compact. The operations buttons on the front of the unit are easy to see and read, too, unlike so many that have black buttons on a black background with charcoal gray labels to tell what they do. For right at 40 dollars including an optional one year money back warranty and free shipping, it was a super bargain. Maybe the outfit I ordered it from rejects any that are poorly refurbished. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is that I haven't had it very long so I don't want to be overly enthusiastic yet.

Toshiba SD-1600 DVD Player

Toshiba SD-1600 DVD Player
  • Dolby Digital and DTS digital output
  • S-video and ColorStream component-video outputs
  • 10-bit, 27 MHz video digital-to-audio converter with high-resolution filter
  • Video black-level expansion
  • DVD/CD Text compatible

I made the mistake of purchasing a Samsung player, which basically died within 2 months. While doing research on Amazon for a replacement, I noticed that lots of people had wonderful things to say about the Toshiba brands. So I decided to purchase one and hope for the best. Well I've got nothing but good things to say.

This little player is really light, but don't let that fool you. It has played all my DVDs with perfection, and hasn't failed me yet. The picture is wonderful, and the sound is pretty good as well. A couple of my discs that would freeze or skip on the Samsung player, work just fine on the Toshiba. That was when I realized that I made a good choice. I love the on-screen setup menus, which allow you to see the picture on the movie that you're watching while adjusting the settings. It's a nice little drop down menu from the top of the screen, with very nice icons that are easy to understand. Other players just blank out the picture while the setup menu takes up the entire screen. You can imagine how frustrating it can be when going back and forth repeatedly from the picture and setup screen, while fine tuning the settings.

The Toshiba SD-1600 is a great player to buy if you're new to DVD, or are looking to add a low-cost, reliable system to another room in your home. Toshiba is known for great picture and sound, so you can't go wrong with them. As an added bonus, they've got a good warranty for it. It's good to know that I can get my player repaired for free at a local Toshiba certified service center if anything happens.

This is a very good entry level machine, essentially an upgraded SD1200. Its not too complicated, just insert the disc and work your way through the dvd's menu. You are not paying for the extras like multiple disc play.

Overall, this machine is quiet and reliable. It get s lots of use in my house, and the only complaint is that the remote could be a lot better. However, from a practical standpoint we don't need to do all that much with the remote other than navigate through the dvd menus.

This unit will not be the one to select for a high end system, but if you are looking for a basic entry level unit then look no further

The Toshiba SD 1600 is a great entry-level DVD player. In terms of picture and sound quality this very affordable unit really delivers. In fact, from the moment I pulled my Toshiba DVD player out of its box, I've experienced 100% satisfaction.

Set up is a cinch. The owner's manual is easy to follow and I had my unit up and running in a matter of minutes. Initially, I hooked up the player using cheap video cables (included in box) and the picture was washed out. I immediately switched to a pair of Monster cables and was blown away by the clarity and definition of the picture (Widescreen movies look especially great when played through this unit). It's certainly worthwhile to fork over a few extra bucks for a pair of quality cables.

Perhaps the most exciting feature of the SD 1600 is the Virtual Surround Sound capability. With a simple click of the remote, an ordinary pair of stereo speakers will produce a lively (and loud) 3-dimensional sound. This feature is a blessing for those (such as myself) who don't yet have the budget, or the time, to shop for an elaborate home theatre sound system.

The remote control is laid-out fairly well and takes only a short time to grow accustomed to. My only complaint is that the remote is not illuminated and is difficult to navigate in the dark. The Fast Forward and Reverse modes are lighting quick --moving along at up to 30 times the speed of the original picture! Those who like to read tiny film credits will love the Zoom feature which greatly enlarges the screen image.

I've been a Toshiba owner for over a year (also have the similar SD 2109)and have never encountered a single problem with the player or any DVD disc. The picture quality and the Virtual Surround Sound are first rate. Overall, I think this is an excellent unit. I would highly recommend it to anyone seeking a quality DVD player at an affordable price.

Want Toshiba SD-1600 DVD Player Discount?

The Toshiba SD-1600 is an excellent entry level DVD player. For the price, it can't be beat, and it bests other models out there costing twice as much.

The SD-1200 was an acclaimed success for Toshiba, and the SD-1600 has a few refinements over that one.

The picture and sound quality are excellent. Though lacking an optical audio out, there is PCM/bitstream and analog outs, as well as a composite video out, an S-Video out, and component video outs. I'm using the analog audio and component video hookups (all with Monster Cables) to my 27" Sony Wega TV and it's brilliant.

Many people have complained about the remote, but I like it. It's not too awkward to get around, and the player responds to it well (as long as you're within a reasonable range). The menu system is good, if not spectacular, and all the options you'd expect from a standard player are there. The SD-1600 also features a Spatializer 3-2-2 3D sound option which provides an excellent surround effect with only two speakers.

Right now I have the player thinking it's connected to a 16:9 television (I'm using the 16:9 anamorphic squeeze option most Wegas have), and the picture quality is nothing short of amazing. I haven't found a disc yet that gives the player any problems, and it's also very quiet when playing.

It's a light machine, weighing only about ten pounds, but don't think it's underpowered because of it. Outside of a progressive scan DVD player (which really is of no benefit until HDTV is popular), this is one of the finest units widely available. Grab it up today.

I'm not really the one that is looking for all these bells and wisthles that many DVD players have today. It might be O.K. for film buffs, but it's not for me. Simply put, this player is worth it! Put in the disc and you have a movie. Unlike those bargain brands, it won't play discs messed up. So far, it has handled every one of my DVD's perfectly. Yes, it can play "The Matrix" "Men In Black and "Toy Story 2" with no problems. Although, it plays DVD's great, make sure that your TV has at LEAST RCA outputs (The yellow, red and white holes. You can't hook it up via coxial cable unless you have one of those RF converters, which is really a poor connection.

Teac W-890R-B Double Auto-reverse Cassette Deck (Black)

Teac W-890R-B Double Auto-reverse Cassette Deck
  • Variable Pitch Control
  • Bi-directional Double-deck Continuous Record/playback
  • Parallel Recording decks 1 & 2 simultaneously
  • Mic/Line Mixing Recording desks 1 & 2
  • Dobly B Noise Reduction HX Pro

This Teac double cassette deck is a replacement for a Denon unit that finally gave up the ghost after more than 10 years of service. Even though the price is similar to its predecessor, this unit is more sturdily built and has superior playback quality. I have a large collection of opera recordings, domestic and imported, which will be the job of this deck; for me it was an easier decision to upgrade the tape deck than to convert weeks worth of music to CDs, especially since so many are copy-protected and would have required a professional workaround.

Everything arrived in good shape, the Teac carton inside the larger, padded Amazon box. The multi-language manual is clear and easy to follow, and setup took just minutes, not hours. I have played back recordings in Normal, Chrome and Metal tape modes, and all three project solid bass; the latter two have a lot more bloom and extension on the high end. The Dolby noise reduction works just fine, so much so that I have to strain to discern any tape hiss at all. The adjustable reverse function works as advertised: you can play one cassette in both directions or set up a continuous loop so that each side plays in both directions--very helpful for three-hour operas. If one side is shorter than the other and there is prolonged quiet, you can always fast-forward to the end or just get up and take a snack or bathroom break while waiting for the next side to start up. Although recording will not be a big deal for me, everything is laid out logically and the keys are very responsive, as is the battery-powered remote control. The sound level meters and tape counters are easy to read, and there is a handy feature if you want to return to a particular song or passage. Just mark the spot by the count, click, and you get an encore. The manual suggests cleaning the heads and capstans every 10 hours of use with a bit of Isopropyl alcohol and a Q-Tip, so you want to be sure this deck is placed in an accessible location with good sightlines, so you can see what you're doing without a flashlight or standing on your head.

Certainly no complaints in terms of meeting my expectations, and better built than most I've seen, I'm looking to many more years of reliable service from this deck as I revisit my collection.

After going through both of my old cassette decks, buying a used one from ebay and returning it.

I thought I would try the ion usb cassette deck, the tape dragged and the frequency response sucked. Sent it back too!

Now I have a great tape deck! This brings back the quality of deck that I was used to.

Smooth eject tape door, noise reduction, play and record from both sides, quality buttons all around.

BUY this deck, it is TOTALLY worth every penny.

Like most Teac products it is 1st class quality. I use two of these for analog recording of live music and then transfer the final product to CD ( on another Teac product). The push button controls are smooth and accurate. It stops and starts instantly and I have used it to edit ( splice ) on occasion. The hi speed dubbing is outstanding. For analog recording this is the way to go.

Sanyo VPC-SH1R High Definition Camcorder and 10 MP Camera (Red)

Sanyo VPC-SH1R High Definition Camcorder and 10 MP CameraI just got the Sanyo VPC-SH1 yesterday so these are first impressions. But I've spent quite a bit of time with it already.

I'm a single guy who will primarily use this camcorder to share short clips online, and occasionally burn a DVD. I'm not filming family opuses, doing any kind of advanced video editing, or even plugging it into an HDTV. So for me here are it's pros and cons. They may not be yours. I'll go into detail later.

Pros:

1. Fits in my jeans front pocket. I call it a pocketcam (barely... and you ladies may not.)

2. Fantastic video quality for a pocketcam.

3. Large wide angle lens.

4. Manual settings for practically everything including ISO and focus.

5. AVC/H.264 format (for ease of use, file size, fast transfer, and because it's common and everywhere. Plus I'm a PC guy).

Cons:

1. Monitor doesn't close flush with the body of the cam.

2. The four way directional "set" button is too small for a guy's hands.

3. Anti-shake could be better.

OK we're off look out!

First off, the only thing I have to compare this Sanyo to is a Sony Webbie (the traditionally shaped one that's very similar in size) that I bought a year ago. Since anything would probably take better videos than that, you might want to take it into consideration when you read this review.

Size is very important to me, and this thing is small. This diminutive camcorder is not just the product of some whacked out Asian obsession with miniaturization. It really is a full featured camcorder with a decent lens that can fit in the front pocket of a man's jeans. And that means that I will actually use it. It would stay here at home most of the time unless I can slip it into my pocket. It's widest point is 1.6" and that's just around the lens area. Most camcorders of this type are well over 2" wide, which really disqualifies them as something you can slip in your pocket easily. The Sanyo VPC-SH1 is kind of a unique product right now, having more features for it's size than anything else currently on the market that I know of anyway.

I ran around for a couple of hours with the Sanyo in one hand, and the Sony in another taking videos outside, inside, up close, far away, and at night both indoors and out. I dumbed the Sanyo down to 720p so they would be on an even playing field. No matter what the conditions were, on my computer monitor the Sanyo videos looked much better. The differences were not subtle. They were dramatic.

It couldn't have been more dramatic than in very low light. The Sony videos would be nothing but a black screen while the Sanyo's would still be quite watchable. Grainy yes but I'll take that. I'm not expecting miracles out of a cam this small.

On it's own the Sanyo does all right in low light, but if you manually run the ISO all the way up to 1600 or 3200 things really brighten up. It won't go that high if you leave it in auto probably because of the grain issue but that's a trade-off I'll make anytime.

I set this up as a one button shortcut, along with manual focus, auto focus lock, and display info on-off. These shortcuts are user configurable to whatever you want them to be and it's simple to set them up. I haven't cracked the manual for anything yet, and I'm hardly a video nut.

Optical zoom goes all the way out to an astounding 30x. There is no way that this is usable unless you have the camcorder set on something solid or on a tripod. I tried zooming to some windmills five miles away and they were shaking in and out of the frame like we had been hit with a magnitude 8 earthquake!

But the cool thing about this zoom is that it's speed is dependent on how far you push the lever. If you slam it you will go to it's max in about three seconds, easily outrunning auto focus. However with a gentle nudge you can slow zoom way down.

Speaking of auto focus, I think this Sanyo does all right most of the time. You can fool it in low light if you suddenly go from something near to something far, but for the most part if you behave yourself it does it's job. It also helped when I went into it's settings and changed the default multipoint focus to spot. You do have AF lock which can be engaged anytime if you need it. Manual focus unfortunately is not available when you are shooting, so you have to adjust it beforehand if you want to use it.

Image stabilization is electronic and pretty weak. I tried walking around with it on and off and it did smooth things out somewhat. But it seemed to have little or no effect at all when zooming in on something, and that's when things are really shaking.

The wide angle lens really does take in a huge panoramic view. I'll appreciate it more this summer and it should make for some great scene shots. The downside is that you end up having to use zoom for more normal stuff just to get your subject in the frame properly.

For the most part the OS is pretty intuitive, but there are a few head scratchers. You can delete a photo file from the set button, but in order to delete a video file you have to dive into the menu system. Audio wind reduction is not in "sound" but bunched with the video noise reduction settings.

I took a few pictures. It works but that's not my primary interest. Still I'm glad it's there because you never know when -

This camcorder behaved perfectly when I hooked it up to my PCs. On both it came up as an external drive named Xacti (a nice touch that Sony missed) and it was fast and easy to locate and copy the files to the hard drive for editing. On my Windows 7 notebook I put together a short video using several clips in Windows Live Movie Maker without a hitch. In fact this is going to be my video editing and sharing program from now on. It does everything I'll ever want to do (trim, join, add titles and music, fade out), and will send the finished video anywhere right from the program. You don't have to ask Youtube to go to your hard drive. This program goes to Youtube or anywhere else you want it to online. And the program is free what more can you say?

I also plugged the Sanyo into my desktop PC running Windows XP, and once again no probs. There I made another clip in Nero Vision throwing in some old files from the Webbie for good measure, and it came out perfectly. That's what's sweet about AVC/H.264 BTW.

I haven't installed the included editor and probably won't.

The biggest drawback this camcorder has (to me) is the hardware. In the interest of sleek styling Sanyo didn't make the body of the cam so it would be flush to the monitor screen when it's closed. The two back edges really hang out there. That's why I wouldn't recommend this camcorder for teenage kids. I don't think it would survive in one piece for long with a 14 year old skateboarder. It's really for adults who hopefully would be a bit more responsible with it.

The "Set" button, which is a four way directional and enter button, is also way too small and sensitive for a guy's thumb. The way I've found to use this very important button is to not put my thumb on it, but engage each direction by gently pushing it from the opposite side. It works but it's not optimal.

In spite of that, I'm giving it five stars because it does everything that I want it to do and very well. It really makes the videos I took on my Sony Webbie look like they were taken with a toy. It cost $150 more than the Webbie but is worth every cent of it.

My five stars may well be someone else's three though. If you prize optical image stabilization you are going to knock off a couple of stars right there. (I don't because optical stabilization adds bulk and size, and it isn't all that important because of how I'm using this camcorder. If I use two hands and hold it at my waist it's pretty easy to keep steady anyway.) It all depends on what you are doing with your videos. Experienced videographers my snub their noses at camcorders like this, but I love it!

-----------------------------UPDATE MARCH 26 2010------------------------------------

Since there seems to be a difference of opinion about what constitutes acceptable low light performance for a small flashcam in in this price range, I thought I'd put up links to a couple of Youtube vids of a low light karaoke bar to help people decide for themselves. I know it's Youtube but it will still give you a good idea. The first one I made myself and it includes both my new Sanyo Xacti VPC-SH1 and my old Sony Webbie MHS-CM1:Here's another vid of the same karaoke bar (with the same singer) made a few months ago by another guy. His camcorder is a Canon FS100:For the purposes of this vid, I left everything on Auto. I purposely chose the same singer (a mutual friend) because I knew the other vid was up.

My original enthusiasm for Windows Live Movie Maker has dampened a bit after using it for a couple of weeks (not worth going into that!) but not for this camcorder. It's just a champ!

I will qualify this reveiw by saying it is my first camcorder. I am a semi pro photographer however. The things I liked are the lens. It goes from 35-1000mm (in 35mm camera terms)with very little distortion at wide angle. Of course to take advantage of the 1000mm end of the range will require a tripod to limit shake. To be expected. The lens zooms fairly smoothly once used to using it. It also auto focuses while zooming reasonably quickly.

Another positive aspect is the build quality as compared to the lower priced Sony,JVC, and Panasonic units that are more expensive if HD than the Sanyo.

Apple users (like me) will find these easy to use with iFrame. Files are downloaded as MP4 files. Sony and Canon are just now coming out with iFrame compatible units this season, while Sanyo had this for a year. Previous versions of the Canon, and Sony had problems had problems with thier image stabilization being compatible (according to iMovie guide). So, credit to Sanyo for being a leader for iFrame compatibilty.

Now for the downside. I'm concerned with the ability of the Sanyo to do well indoors or heavy shade. I took some footage inside a moderatly lit building and the results were quite grainy. According to the specs, the unit switches between ISO speeds while in the Auto Mode. The max it uses in Auto is 400. If it is grainy at 400, the higher ISOs accessible in Manual would be aweful. The footage I would want are only going to be availible outdoors in full light. Too bad. A fatal flaw for me.

Also worth mentioning, The photos are not 10MP but 3MP interpolated to 10MP if you look closely at the specs. So its camera function has limited use.

In conclusion, if you want a camera to shoot high res video and pics and are using it mainly outside, consider the less expensive Sanyo GH1/GH2 or CG100/CG102 that have a true 14MP. If you want a camcorder that will shoot better indoors, the Canons have better low light specs.

Buy Sanyo VPC-SH1R High Definition Camcorder and 10 MP Camera (Red) Now

I just got the camera last night. I've only done a few tests on it. I'll play with it more this weekend. It appears this camera supports iFrame. This is an apple format that equates to 960x540 at 30p. The reduced dimension format actually takes up more space than the max 1080i setting. I think its a different flavor of mp4 that has less compression than the other HD formats supported on the camera. The idea is that if you bring this format into iMovie on the Mac, the files work natively with the app. On the video settings, this is the star symbol. I'll do a test later tonight, but I'm pretty sure this is so.

Without shooting, I can tell you that this camera is tiny. Like William, I also was looking for a camera that would not be a burden to carry around. I have been shooting on a Flip and an iPhone. The quality isn't great, but the iPhone is always in my pocket. I won't always have the Sanyo with me, but when I am going to an event, or know I want to shoot something specific, this camera's size is near perfect. It does not come with a memory card (The onboard memory is 50MBkind of a buffer i guess). But you would end up throwing away the small capacity card they give you, so this is not an issue. It comes with USB, but no HDMI, but this is not really a big deal either.

All told, without extensively testing the camera/video quality, this camera is pretty amazing. If you are spending over $150 for a flip with no features or controls, its a no brainer to get this tiny camera for $350.

More on the quality at a later date...

I was looking for a compact HD digital camcorder that also takes good pictures on SD cards so I don't have to carry a camera with me out on trips. After extensive research, I found this Sanyo Xacti VPC-SH1 is the only one in the ~$300.00 price range with large CCD. All others, including Canon, Sony, Panasonic, and JVC, have small CCDs which can't produce good quality pictures in low lights. This camera is also capable of taking 10MP pictures while others can't even come close. No wonder it is called a Dual Camera.

I have had it for a month. I took videos and pictures both indoors and outdoors. I even took pictures of fireworks on 4th. of July and indoor circus show. All came out good! To save memory space, I only set the camera at 2MP but the picture quality and resolution are every bit as good as those taken from a digital camera. This camera/camcorder also allows you to take snapshots while taking videos. Some expert reviews had issue with the on-screen menu but I find the menu to be easy to use. I am pleased with this purchase.

Want Sanyo VPC-SH1R High Definition Camcorder and 10 MP Camera (Red) Discount?

I bought this because we wanted a dedicated video camera instead of using the video function on our digital camera. The things that drew me to this:

* Low price

* HD quality video (though only 1080i I think, not 1080p)

* Small size

* Still camera function

* Big optical zoom

How did it live up? Well, for sure it is inexpensive, much cheaper that approximately equivalent Sony & Canon that I've been looking at. And it is small. It is scarcely larger than some dedicated point-n-shoot's. In fact, on a 2 week trip, I often just stuffed it into my shorts pocket, and it was fine even hiking through mild forest trails.

To really put it to the test, I almost exclusively used this camera on a 2 week trip, mostly for stills and some video.

* The battery life & startup time are excellent. At first I turned off the camera, but then, I just shut the viewer to put it to sleep. 2 weeks later, I still had battery left after video and almost 300 still shots.

* It was comfortable and easy to handle (I have relatively large, though not chunky, hands). Those with even bigger hands than me might find it a bit "cramping" to try and hold such a small camera in the usual camcorder grip. You may want to opt for the VPC-C* series with the unconventional format.

* Low light performance was not great (I understand Sony & Canon are significantly better), however, it still beat a Canon SD850 in real-life situations. Although it might be a bit grainy, it was at least fast enough to capture a shot without blur. In fact, comparing the the SD850, I only had 1 or 2 bad shots lost to blur or low-light, which is a LOT better. By low light, I mean bright dinner table candle-light.

* Lots of setup options, but a very easy to use system. Very nice. It basically stayed out of the way and let me do the shoot. The 2 dedicated still or video buttons in 2 positions are great.

* Solid! It got dropped on hard floor, rocks and pavement and it survived with barely a scratch and nothing broken or loose.

As a video camera, it did okay, it got the shots and met expectations for a camcorder at this level. Video's looked clear and no problem with the sounds. Even though often windy, I never noticed it in the shots, only the conversations.

As a still-camera replacement? Tougher answer, at first when I download the shots to my laptop, I was quite disappointed with the colour and "vibrancy" of the images vs. my memory. Some noise reduction artifacts are visible if you are looking for it. It is a "true" 4MP sensor only, so I mostly stayed at the 4MP size and the wide-screen 7MP format. I took some test shots at various resolutions, and sure enough, can't really tell much difference. I recommend you stick with the high quality 4MP setting unless you need the wide-screen setting.

The zoom works as advertised, it is pretty amazing (beat even my DSLR with a 28-105mm zoom) though it did not do as well as a decent pair of binoculars. And yes, you need a very steady hand to use the zoom. However, to be fair, in bright sunlight, I did manage to use maximum zoom in my hand and it grabbed the shots without blur.

When I put the photos up on a 42" plasma, and the pictures are excellent. If this is your preferred viewing format, then I would be very satisfied with this camera, especially for vacation shots. The image colour looked great, the images looked sharp and clear. Unless you're a hard-core camera enthusiast, it's hard to imagine being disappointed with this camera. If you are printing large-format paper, you may be disappointed as well, but I'm not sure. I took some test shots on the trip using a Canon DSLR and the Canon (with a significantly better lens) is sharper and clearer with better colour reproduction, but you have to be really looking for it or put it side-by-side to notice.

Things that are not so good:

* Holding strap management, the extra length is supposed to fold back on a little clip on the strap, but this is next to useless and the strap often flew out in front of the lense.

* The lens cover is "stupid", it only fits in 2 specific orientations, so it makes it finicky to put on.

* Low light performance could be better (but for the price...)

At this price point, I would highly recommend this camera. In a year or so, I might upgrade to a better low-light camera or the waterproof version, but for now, it is an excellent camera. I would even take just this and replace my still digital camera.

The unit could not be controlled from the iPod directly rendering useless to me. I found that a cheap DVD player and hooking iPod using the phone jack on receiver did the same thing.

The iPhone dock doesn't work. Right out of the box it doesn't work. As in, you plug it in and it says it's not supported. It plays DVDs, but don't buy it if you want to use the iPhone feature.

Want RCA DRC300iH DVD Player with Dock for iPod and iPhone Discount?

The dvd player its self is nice for the price nothing special. When it comes to the ipod menu its real sluggish and lags out to the point you have to click to enter menus and scroll around, you'll find yourself mashing the buttons on the remote a doven times before you get any response. All in all its worth the 70$, cheap and it does the job.

Sharper Image 720P HD345 HD Camcorder with 5.0 MP CMOS, Interpolation to 12 MP, MPEG-4 Video, 2.4-I

Sharper Image 720P HD345 HD Camcorder with 5.0 MP CMOS, Interpolation to 12 MP, MPEG-4 Video, 2.4-Inch LCD, 8X Digital Zoom, Music Player, Voice Recorder, Remote Control IncludedI ended up returning this item. It was not very user friendly and the manual that came with the product was a joke. I felt like I was trying to figure it out on my own because the instructions didn't explain things very well, and I became frustrated and just sent it back. I would not recommend this item and will definitely not purchase another product from this manufacturer.

every picture is either too dark, too bright, too blurry, or too yellow.

I might buy another one if they drop the price to $14.99.

Seriously, this is what its worth in my opinion.

Besides, with the built in memory, you can only take like seven pictures.

and good luck finding an 8gig "SD" memory card, not SDHC, SDHC can be found everywhere.

Try finding an SD card with more than 2 gigs go buy a lottery ticket, because it will be your lucky day.

I've always loved this camera, the only trouble I have is keeping track of the charge cord. (my own fault)

I didn't even look at the manual personally, if you're used to cameras and tech it's fairly easy to figure out. I've also found it's quite durable, I'm not exactly easy on the things I carry around in my purse and it's still alive and fine.. As for picture image quality, if you have good lighting it comes out perfect. It's not the camera made to fix your lighting problems.

Zenith DVD2201 DVD Player

Zenith DVD2201 DVD Player
  • Digital disc player: Single tray. Dolby Digital/DTS output. Last condition memory. Repeat play. 4X-16X moveable zoom.
  • Supports DVD, CD, CD-R/RW, and MP3 decoding.
  • Connections: Component video out (YUB) (1). S-video out (1). Composite video out (1). Coaxial digital audio out (1). Variable audio out (2).
  • Zenith SC201 DVD remote control.

If you just wanna play DVDs, this is a REALLY good player! It comes with the standard features plus a few nifty ones including a bookmarking feature. You can mark up to five points on a disc with one button and then when you want to go back, press another button and you'll be taken to a menu with screenshots of the scene you stopped at.

The user menu is also very nice-looking and would be a great player for a family with children because the menus are very kid-friendly.

This is the perfect player for someone wanting their first DVD players. It has enough to satisfy advanced users and not too many things to confuse a newbie.

The only downside is that you have to hold the chapter skip button to fast forward or rewind. The remote takes some getting used to but it's really nice-looking.

Micro Eyes DVR BallCam

Micro Eyes DVR BallCamBut that was then, this is now. The first CamBall I purchased would not start at all. I was able to contact the retailer who sold it to me and he gave great service replacing the bad unit immediately.

The second cam I received worked well, recorded well, had great resolution, but after a few months the on/off button stopped working correctly; the spring under the soft button just broke. Even so, I was able to continue using the camera for a year or so after getting it into on mode.

After only a few months of use, the recorder would not stay on unless it was plugged into a 12V source. Another disappointment, but it was still recording when plugged into the car.

I was not happy with the limited recording of the 2GB memory card so I purchased a 16GB memory card to extend recording time, but the Camball would not recognize the 16 GB card and continued to record only on the first 2GB. After a bit of reading I learned that the firmware would have to be upgraded to work with 16 gigs. However, no matter what site or software I tried to use, I could not get the camera to download or install any firmware upgrades.

Cut to today when I plugged the recorder into my home computer to look at the latest video. Nothing has been recorded and as far as I can tell, nothing had been recording on the Camball for an unknown amount of time.

If this was just a $50 unit, I would have been happy to just chalk this on up as a "failed effort" but this was not an inexpensive camera. At $200 I expected more and believe I should have had a better experience than this. Another poor quality Chinese product sold to a gullible American.

I would give the BallCam 5 stars if the microphone picked up sound better. Otherwise it's excellent quality video camera that's not hard to configure and get to use as soon as it's charged.

As much as I wanted this camera to work, it gave me 2 days of frustration. Too many dysfunctional items, and complicated steps & buttons. It would be nice to simplify this toy and actually make it work.

The disc does not update the new version for the camera. Then I tried to follow the poor instructions ( perhaps just bad translation) and set up the camera on stand by mode for the night after charging it 2.5 h. In the morning there was no recording. The only thing that this camera did: took nice manual picture shots and based on the clarity of the pictures I had high hopes. Then I tried to recharge it to see if I did something wrong for the night setup, but every time I tried to insert the USB cable it froze the computer. On another computer there was a message that said that the USB exceds the power, so back it goes. I am so disappointed! It looks like a nice toy with multiple acessories problems.

Panasonic VIERA X1 Series TC-P50X1 50-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV

Panasonic VIERA X1 Series TC-P50X1 50-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV
  • 50-inch plasma 720p HDTV with three HDMI inputs
  • 600Hz Sub-field Drive produces crisp, focused images for sports
  • VIERA Image Viewer lets share digital photos
  • VIERA Link Panasonic DVD recorder, Blu-ray Disc player, home theater sound system and HD camcorder
  • Contrast Ratio: 30,000:1 Native; Infinite Black Panel

Purchased for our master bedroom, the Panasonic TC-P50X1 50" 720p has true brilliant color, impressive blacks, great resolution (looks like a 1080p to me and I am a picky engineer), surprisingly good sound and great looks. It sports the lowest price per square inch of screen area and beats LCDs hands down with its 600Hz refresh rate (absolutely no motion blur) and looks the same no matter where you are in the room. After considerable research, the TC-P50X1 was the clear choice due to its price, performance and appearance. A super buy.

I was going back and forth between the 720p and the 1080p and I could not see a difference, they had both side by side, and for the $700 difference it was not worth it to me. I bought the TV at best buy because they matched a competitor online price and that also brought the 4 year warranty down to only $159! Once the tv was delivered (free!) and my HD from directv was set up (free!) I was blown away by the quality. Great color and sharpness, I have it hooked up via HDMI and it is great. My brother has the samsung 1080p and I can't tell the difference. The connections are conviently located on the left side of the back of the tv and the sd card slot which is a great addition is on the left side of the tv along w/ some more inputs. It took me about a week or so to finally customize my own picture setting, I did not like the preset ones that much, either to dark or the vivid is to bright and contrasty. There is no VGA input but I got the pc hooked up via the s-video. Only downfall is if you use the SD card slot to view pictures it is very very slow at processing them, I suggest using the usb slot or the cords that came with the camera. Overall I would definetly suggest this tv especially for the price, you cannot find a better deal on a new release plasma tv.

I love these Panasonic Plasmas, you can't go wrong. I tried this 720P version this time. I have a 46" Viera in 1080P plasma and this 50" has the same picture quality, I cannot tell the difference and I have great vision, and am very picky about picture quality. This is a great product and you can't beat the price.

I purchased this from amazon. Initial delivery was scheduled for 7 days after I placed the order over the weekend. First call from shipper moved the delivery up 3 days, second call moved it up one more day. Delivered on Wednesday, just 3 days after placing the order.

Truck showed up with just the driver. Was expecting two people, but one was enough to get the job done. Brought it in and unpacked it. I had the wall mount ready to go, so he attached the brackets to the TV and hung it on the all mount. He hooked up the cables from my Dish Network receiver and checked it out. Very happy with the whole procedure, and tipped the driver $20.

I was a little disappointed at the initial picture quality. On both Fox News HD and CNBC HD the faces looked a little muddled, like the resolution was not exactly right. Movies on HBO HD looked ok, but still not a good as I thought they should be. I thought about putting my 32" LCD beside it to see if I could see a difference, but never got around to it.

After two day of viewing, the picture is now perfect, just what I was hoping for. The only change I made was to switch to Cinima mode for the TV settings, but I don't think that is what made the difference.

Not sure why it took a couple of days for the picture improvement, but all the problems I noticed initially are history. I couldn't be happier with this TV, especially the price and delivery. Best Buy had this TV for $989, but free delivery only applied to $999 and above.

I write this so someone esel can feel safe taking the plunge on PLASMA, and feel safe about a 720p as well.... this TV is fantastic so far.

Ok, so I used to sell Mitsubishi back in the day when plasma was new, and yes they were nice, but they were also ten thousand dollars. The cinema experince of them was great tho, so much more depth than the new LCD, and much better black levels. And believe me, that makes a HUGE difference in overall picture quality.

Well I have run 1080i on my Vizio 37" LCD tvs now for a few years, and was extremely satisfied with them. The picture was very vibrant and colorful etc.

This TV is a FIFTY INCH.... and it blows the DOORS off the 1080p Vizio 37 inch I had in its place. The viewing distance didnt change, so its actually TOO close for a 50 inch, and its still just stellar. The red is a bit bright, but I know TV images and there is ZERO blooming ( fuzzy glow) to the reds ot other high contrast images like whites and reds. Imagine white credits on a black screen... if they are hazy, contrast is bad, if they can remain very bright but still have crisp edges, you have yourself a very nice TV. Like this one. There is full adjustment to picture and color temperature, the sound is pretty good, def nothing to complain about. Its a classy TV, piano black etc.

I was VERY concerned about the 720p issue, and I have to tell you, the fact that its plasma seems to completely soak up that fact and make it disappear. Again, the look of PLASMA is far better than what I percieve on the 120Hz LCD models. I was completely ready to have a bit worse picture quality to have a 50 inch in my living room, and it far surpasses my other tv's/ I seriously go to sleep watching my 1080i 37 in the bedroom ( hooked up to full hi def mind you) and it looks like im watching a mobile audio sytle LCD monitor in the back of a car headrest in comparison. And just a few days ago, I thoght it was just great.

Complaints? It is HEAVY. Big time heavy. Its do able as one person, but Im a pretty big guy... otherwise its a 2 person gig to move it. Keep the box as you will need it to move it to a new place etc. And the fact that the cables attach behind the tv all the way to the left side sucks..... hard to hide cables that way.

Im not a fan of the remote, but this TV is sick.

ALSO: the SD card viwer.. very cool. It somehow ( I never read manuals anymore) blows up the images and displays my phone pictures ( 3.2 m pixel) in 50 inch with amazing clarity.. dont know if its upconverting them etc.. but they look friggin hi def too.. crazy.

I looked hi n low, this was THE best deal avail, in town or otherwise.

Securityman ClearCam Wi-Fi Interference-Free Mini Wireless Color Camera Kit with Audio

Securityman ClearCam Wi-Fi Interference-Free Mini Wireless Color Camera Kit with AudioNormally video cameras have automatic gain control that turns up the sensitivity in low light. This camera does the opposite. In any light lower than bright office light it produces very dark and noisy pictures. In fact, instead of turning up the gain in low light it turns it down. I pointed it at a slightly dark area and then slid in a white piece of paper to see how the extra bright area affected the rest of the picture. A normal camera will reduce the gain when a bright object in introduced into the scene. In this case the background should have gotten darker when the white paper was put in the scene. But, it got brighter! It turns up the gain when the light level goes up! Either this camera was defective or it has a serious design flaw. In any case I'm returning it for a refund.

I couldn't really see how this cam works, because I dropped it from about 2 feet and it stopped working properly.

Be careful, this thing is fragile..too fragile I might say. Despite my general knowledge about electronics, I couldn't bring it back on line.Something went wrong with the ccd. From what i got to see, the angle of view is narrow, about 60 degrees.Receiver works ok.I guess for the money (around $50) seems like an ok product.

JVC Everio GZ-MG50 1.33 MP 30 GB Hard Disk Drive Camcorder w/15x Optical Zoom

JVC Everio GZ-MG50 1.33 MP 30 GB Hard Disk Drive Camcorder w/15x Optical ZoomPlease note that since there have already been many user reviews written, this may not seem like much of a "review", but I thought I would touch on a few things I was wondering about myself before buying the camera in case it might help someone else.

This hard drive-based camcorder is wonderful. Well done JVC! I was going to buy the next model up, the MG70, but since I don't use it for photos, I don't believe I would benefit from the increased megapixel CCD. Besides, the MG70 only had 10x optical zoom, and was missing the video light and F1.2 bright lens. I'm happy with the MG50.

In case you haven't noticed, this camcorder has no viewfinder so you must use the flip-out LCD screen.

Video quality: The hard drive feature is brilliant! The only quality level you should avoid is Econo (37 hr mode), since it reduces the resolution by half and also records only about 15 frames per second. Ultra-fine (7.25 hrs) is the best, but I couldn't notice much of a difference when I lowered the quality level to Fine (10 hrs) or Normal (14 hrs). On the highest 3 modes (ultra fine, fine, and normal), the camera records full 720x480 resolution. As far as I can tell, it really is sampling that many lines of resolution. Other digital camcorders I've used (mini-DV) have had very noticable "stair-step jaggies" in parts of the picture, especially along the borders between high-contrast elements of the picture. On this hard drive camera, however, the resolution is significantly higher and these jagged lines (aliasing) are rarely noticeable at all, if ever.

As for how the camera records files onto the hard drive: It creates a new .MOD file (it's an MPEG-2 video file with Dolby Digital audio) every time you start/stop the recording. So, all your clips are conveniently seperated, but of course you can combine them with your video editing software later if you prefer. The camera will record for 12 hrs continuously if needed, but will create a new .MOD file for every 4GB of footage.

You may have read in other reviews about the following trick: rename the .MOD files that the camera records to .MPG for increased compatibility. Well, I tried it and it works like a charm, regardless of whether your video footage is in 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio. This makes it easy to use your favorite DVD-burning or video editing software with this camera, as well as ensuring future compatibility. I haven't found even one program that couldn't play the files perfectly after I renamed them. Even Windows Media Player 9 had no problem. If you leave them as .MOD, then you won't find many programs that support it (at least not yet). The only ones I found that did were the one that came with the camera (Cyberlink), and Adobe Premiere Elements 2.

One thing I should mention about the files that the camera saves. It numbers them in hexadecimal (1-9 then A-F (eg. MOV009, then MOV00A...)), so some people may find this a bit annoying. Also, my Windows XP computer alphabetizes the files A-Z, then 0-9, so they end up being displayed in the wrong order. I'm not sure why my computer is doing this and don't know if all windows XP computers will do it (it worked fine on my Windows 2000 computer), but you can always list them in chronological order if you need to correct this. I believe most video editing software will, however, list the files in the correct alphanumeric order (1-9 then A-Z). Mine all do.

The camera has a handy feature called "File# Reset". Every time you activate this, it creates a new folder on the hard drive and begins saving all future clips into it. This is a handy way to seperate your recorded "events", in case you tend to fill up the hard drive before copying it to your computer, and you may have months worth of footage on the camera. So you can have your daughter's birthday party in one folder, your trip to the zoo in another, etc...

Playback: Playback of sequential clips on the camera (either on the LCD or onto a TV) is seamless. There is no pause between scenes it plays back just like a tape would with clean cuts between recordings. Also, you can locate specific clips by viewing thumbnail images (9 per screen) or by listing by recording date. Then, of course, after playing back clips, there is no need to fast forward the tape back the next available blank part for recording. When you go to record again, the camera will not overwrite previous material.

The camera allows for limited editing (deleting or rearranging of clips). Also, in case you delete a lot of clips and then continue recording, the hard drive may eventually become fragmented. The camera has a handy utility built in that will defragment the hard drive. I haven't used it myself because I haven't needed it, but it's nice to know it's there.

Low light performance on this camera isn't the best I've seen, but it is still pretty good for such a small camera. My previous camera was a JVC as well (mini DV only about 3 years old). It was slightly brighter in low light, however, I find that this hard drive JVC camera has much better autofocus performance for low light or fast movements. All recent JVC cameras (including this MG50) have "Night Alive" mode which reduces the shutter speed to about 1/2 second. This is useless unless your camera is on a tripod and your subject is not moving at all. You might as well take a picture then... However, the MG50 has adjustable shutter speeds in between as well. I find it useful in low light situations to change the shutter speed to 1/15 sec. This brightens the image considerably. It does reduce the motion a blur if things are moving too fast, but I still consider it a reasonable trade-off for the amount of extra brightness in the scene.

The built-in light is useful under some situations. Be aware the effective range of the light is only about 3-5 feet, so unless your subject is within that range, the light won't make any difference. It does have it's useful moments though (like filming a pet on the floor in a dimly lit room) Also, using the light consumes less than 10% more power because it's an LED, but of course that's also the reason why it's not very bright.

Photos: Image quality for still photos, in my opinion, is terrible. Not only is the resolution inadequate for most uses, it's extremely difficult to depress the shutter button without shaking the camera and blurring the image. The start/stop button (doubles as a shutter release button in photo mode) is quite stiff.

Startup time: This camera has poor startup time, but I guess that's to be expected being that it's a hard drive camera. From the completely off position, it takes 10 full seconds (based on my own tests) before you can actually begin recording. Even this is only about double the typical startup time for a mini-DV camera, it might mean you'll miss that special moment you're trying to record. Even if the camera is in record-standby mode, it still takes 3 seconds from the time you press the start/stop button until the camera is actually recording.

Camera noise: The camera does produce a faint hum while the hard drive is spinning, but I found that this is less noticeable on the recording than the sound of the tape machanism on the 3 mini-DV camcorders I've used. Of course, some mechanical noise is expected on compact cameras like this one. Without an external mic, it is unavoidable. Unfortunately on this camera, you cannot connect an external mic. The zooming motor is also slightly noticeable, but no more than other similar-sized camcorders. Besides, unkless you're in a completely quiet situation these sounds won't even be an issue at all for you.

Lens cap: The lens cap stays in place nicely. Since it only covers the lens itself and doesn't extend any further than it needs to, it tends to stay in place (unlike other cameras I've had where the lens cap pops off while inserting/removing it from a bag or pocket).

Drop detection: you may have read that this camera has a feature that senses a freefall or other motion that could potentially damage the hard drive, and automatically shuts the camera off. Well, just so you know, there is an option on the camera to turn this feature off, in case you want to make a video on your favorite rollercoaster. I'm not saying I recommend this, but I just thought I'd mention it. I myself have not personally witnessed this feature work yet, but then again I haven't tried dropping it!

Overall, I highly recommend this camcorder to the casual videographer (great for vacations!). It seems to really stand up to competing cameras in it's class on most points. However, if you're a more serious videographer you might want to consider a larger, 3-CCD camera with a bright light and external mic. Otherwise, have fun!

I gave this review only 4 stars because of these few issues: lack of viewfinder, slow startup time, and poor image quality for still photos.

I've been waiting for this technology for years. So when I found out JVC was planning on coming out with their 4 GB microdrive version, I had to have one. The $1500 price tag was too much though. Then I found out the GZ-MG50 was coming out, and would be about a $1000. I thought it was still a little pricey, but I couldn't wait any longer.

So far, the camera has performed great. It's been easy to use and easy to transfer the files to my computer then to DVD. However, the video editing software that came with it seems a bit cheap, but it gets the job done. Maybe the next gen version will be an improvement.

The movie quality is very good. I won't give it a "Great" because I occasionally see pixel blurring when watching my burned DVDs.

Don't bother taking pictures with this, unless you only plan on emailing them. The quality is far too low to use to capture those precious moments.

I recommend getting an additional battery (the three hour model). The one hour battery just doesn't cut it, especially if you want to review your scenes while you're out shooting.

If JVC gave the camcorder a larger CCD and included better software, I would have given this a 5 star rating, otherwise I think they are on the right track, and in a few years, the MiniDV may be as forgotten as the eight-track.

Buy JVC Everio GZ-MG50 1.33 MP 30 GB Hard Disk Drive Camcorder w/15x Optical Zoom Now

Finally! I have been waiting for a video camera that takes good quality video (not mpeg4) and does not use tapes. Everyone that I know has a minidv/digital8 camera, and when they shoot something, the last we all ever see of it is when they hook up the camera to the tv at the end of the day. After that, no copies, no sharing, most of the time no one ever sees the video again. The whole point of recording memories is that you can watch them easily whenever you want and be able to share them with friends and family whenever you want.

First I have to say this is my first camcorder ever (yes, I have been waiting 30 years for this camera). I have used plenty of other camcorders that people have let me borrow, but this is the first camcorder I ever buy for myself.

I went to Cancun two weeks ago and I made the decision that I had to buy a camera for the trip. This camera was a great choice and I love it! I didn't have to lug along my digital still camera, because the everio takes 1152x864 pictures as well which is more than enough for me (for those out there that think they need 6 megapixel pictures, wake up and smell the marketing).

When I got back from my trip, I decided to sit down and get everyone a copy of the video. I was a little apprehensive because I work in advertising and I know how cumbersome and slow it can be to work with large video files if you don't have a computer specifically made for that task...I decided to use my home computer because I didn't want to wait (2.6ghz celeron with 512mb of ram). I didn't really like the DVD authoring software that came with it (seemed to complicated and unintuitive), so I used the Nero VisionExpress that came with my Nero Ultimate Edition software. It was soooo easy to get this done. Within one hour I had already completed a dvd with all the footage from trip, with thumbnail menus, and chapters automatically set for each time the camera stopped. I shot some footage of tropical fish in the water at Cozumel and I used that as the video background underneathe all of the menus. On a separate DVD I also created a compilation of photo slideshows (with music) from all the photo cameras everyone took (including pictures taken with my Everio).

I had the software "burn to hard disk" so I could make as many copies as I wanted of both dvds. I made 5 copies and was totally done with the project in 2 hours. This would not have been possible without this camera, capturing from any other minidv camera or other video source would require hours upon hours of video conversion to dvd compliant mpeg2. But since this camera shoots in mpeg2, that is not a factor.

I love this camera and highly recommend it for most people. If you are one of those videophiles that worries about the number of lines of resolution of your video, or how many ccd chips your camera has, then this camera is probably not for you. If you want great looking video and the convenience of being able to share it EASILY, CHEAPLY AND QUICKLY then definitely check out this camera.

On another note, I have used the software that came with the camera to convert video clips to quicktime, windows media video and realvideo. This is very useful for emailing clips, posting them on websites, or putting them inside your windows media center (or other home theater pc) for easy access.

Also, when getting this camera, be aware that there are two models/versions out there that only do 640x480 pictures...I almost made that mistake.

Love my new JVC Everio. The original model just used compact flash cards, but the new Everio GZ uses an ipod like hard drive that lets you store a year's worth of video on it! Tape is definitely dead, and DVD camcorder's 30 mintues a disc doesn't hold a candle to the Everio.

The only issue I had was that the software that come with it was pretty basic, but all the other video editing software programs didn't recognize the Everio video files (.mod files which contain MPEG2 Video and Dolby Stereo Audio).

I did finally find Adobe Premiere Elements 2.0 which supports this new file type natively. It has made editing a breeze.

[Below is my recent review of the JVC Everio GZ-MG40, which has a 20GB hard drive rather than 30GB. Becase GZ-MG50 seems to be identical to GZ-MG40 save the hard drive capacity, I thought this review would be useful to those considering to buy GZ-MG50.]

----------------------------------------

I have been using this camcorder for almost two weeks now. And here are my impressions:

PROS:

A) This is a tiny camcorder and I can easily carry it in my pocket everyday.

B) It records directly on a [30GB] harddrive. This is probably the most amazing feature of this camera. It has the following amazing benefits:

(1) A huge recording space

(2) Random access to recorded videos when browsing

(through a thumblist of videos)

(3) Super fast transfer onto your computer through USB 2.0.

(4) No tapes, no CDs, no DVDs to worry about while recording video.

(5) Facilitates easy archiving/organizing . For example, all the recorded files on the camera's harddrive have "creation date"s as a part of their file information. When the camera is connected to your computer, you can sort all files by date and easily separate all recordings by date to different folders by simply selecting and dragging. (This is extra, but if you want to index and be able to search your video files, say with google desktop, simply enter a list of keywords in the file name about the contents of the file.)

(6) The harddrive on your camera can double as additional portable storage mediathis is unlikely but If you wanted you could even install linux on it and carry with you an operating system on your camera.

C) Video quality is good for a consumer level video camera. The sound quality recorded through the internal microphone is good: i can hear the lectures I record very clearly and there is no annoying noise generated by the camera.

D) The charger that comes with this camera is very small. So you can carry that around as well and worry less about running out of battery.

CONS:

A) No mic jacks.

B) manual focus and light adjustments are done through menus.

C) The editing software that comes with it is limited.

D) The battery life is a mere hour(but you can buy a 3 hour battery for 70-80 dollars).

As with all camcorders, the still images shot with this camera are not at the level of quality you can get from a good still camera. It produces reasonable snapshots in well lit situations.

The video files recorded by this camera have a ".MOD" extension in their name. I replace ".MOD" with ".MPG" and most of my standard video viewing software automatically recognize the files.

Within 6 weeks of purchasing this item, I could no longer record TV shows as the audio no longer worked. I could not return it to the store so I called Sylvania and was told I would have to send it back as it could not be fixed. What a piece of junk! I can't wait to buy a new one (which will NOT be a Sylvania model either!). We could not turn the timer on or off using the remote either.

I use this cable to give me a TV display on a spare LCD panel in my office. I ran the cable from my Directv box in a nearby room. I have to go to the other room to switch channels, but I don't tend to channel surf much.

The video and sound are fine.

Sony DCR-SR80 60GB 1MP Hard Disk Drive Handycam with 12x Optical Zoom

Sony DCR-SR80 60GB 1MP Hard Disk Drive Handycam with 12x Optical ZoomJust bought this camera from Circuit City about two weeks ago. The first camera I had to return the next day because the image on the LCD was stuck upside down. The camera powers up pretty fast and you can begin recording in just a couple seconds. I love the fact that you can browse through the video and play anything on the fly. I would have thought at this price point it would take better still shots (only 1mp)but that wasnt really the reason I bought it anyway. Low light is ok.. it's no better or worse then my JVC Mini DV. I like the Sony 'night shot' feature. It allows you to take video in total darkness with a built in infrared mode. Do yourself a favor though and purchase an extended battery. The one that comes with it is pretty worthless at only a 1 hour rated life. I purchased the extended 9 hour battery and can realistically get about 4-5 hours without having to charge. The touchscreen is a little different but you get used to it quick. Kinda wish it had a viewfinder but that's on the next model up.

Mainly I purchased this because I was sick of dealing with tapes... I have a whole box of VHS and Mini DV tapes that I now have to take the time and convert to usable formats on my PC. The beauty of this camera is that all that goes away and the video is going to be in it's purest form for this level of camera. It doesnt take hollywood level video but at least you are removing one step out of the equation when having to re-render it. The software that comes with it is pretty worthless. about the only thing I liked was it has the ability to archive any changes from the camera whether video or photo and auto back it up with one click.

Don't buy the SR-40 or SR-60 you will be disapointed with the features vs. price. If you are looking to upgrade from tape go with this one the SR-80 becasue it is the best value over the two lower models. If you can afford it (i couldnt) Get the SR-100 becasue it has the better camera (3mp) and a viewfinder.

Compare the reviews of Sony vs JVC before you buy a HD Camera!!

This camcorder does capture good video. But the main drawback is that it records in MPEG2 format (DVD quality). Initially its nice and easy to capture video and watch it on your computer by downloading the files using the USB 2.0 connection. It gives you instant gratification. But after capturing 4 or 5 hours of video, you will notice that your videos aren't so great as you expect it to be. Its not the fault with your camcorder. Its because all of us shoot extra footage, unwanted scenes, shakes, etc which we want to edit. You may want to add a title or two, add transitions, add backgroud music, combine your photos with the video, etc. Basically you may want to edit your footage. Its here when you find the major drawback of this camcorder. The MPEG2 quality video is not good for editing. The video quality is so compressed that you won't have sufficient bandwidth to edit the video.

MPEG2 is a LOSSY compression technique used to compress large video files into smaller files that can be fit into a 4 GB or 8 GB DVD. Since the camcorder compresses the video and then writes to the hard disk, the source file that you download to your computer is already compressed and has lost much of its data during the compression. If you edit this already compressed file, you lose more data during the process thus resulting in poorer video quality.

When you edit these videos, add some transitions or special effects, increase/decrease brigthness or noise, etc, the newly edited video loses further clarity and thus makes your video look ugly and pixelated.

In summary please don't buy this camcorder if you are serious about your videos and would like to edit them. But if you are not bothered about editing and want to watch your unedited footage forever, then go for it.

That said, if you still think you want to go for this camcorder, please read the review on its other features:

1. Super NightShot Infrared System: Not a useful feature. Its amazining to initially see how this camcorder is able to "see" using infrared light. But the moment you shoot your subject using infrared light, you never want to shoot again as they will appear like devils when shot using this infrared light. Remember infrared footage appears almost black-and-white and not color. And the subject's eyes really look like devil.

2. 2.5-inch wide SwivelScreen LCD display with touch panel capabilities: Sony convenietly "forgot" to mention that this screen is NOT widescreen. Most of the camcorders now-a-days come with widescreen LCD. Its a good feature if you always want to shoot in widescreen. In fact I would suggest you to shoot in widescreen only as all future TVs and current LCD/Plasma TVs are widescreen. You can future proof your video by shooting widescreen. This camcorder DOES support widescreen video but the LCD is NOT widescreen. So when you shoot widescreen, you see black bands on the top and bottom.

3. Digital still photos: Please don't rely on this feature. The best photos from this camcorder as as good as the worst photos from any popular digital camera. Technology has still not matured to the point where a camcorder can shoot as good as a digital camera and vice versa.

4. 20x optical/120x digital zoom: Optical zoom is very good. You can handle upto 10X optical zoom without a tripod. Any more zoom requires the use of a tripod. I was able to zoom in and read a car tag from the top of Sears tower, Chicago. I love the zoom feature in this camcorder. Don't use the digital zoom feature. Turn it off. As mentioned above, MPEG2 compression already makes the video bad in quality. The digital zoom further makes it worst.

5. Professional-quality Carl Zeiss lens: Yes its good. The image quality is truly great. No doubt about it.

6. Super SteadyShot picture stabilization system: Good enough to avoid small vibrations caused when going on a ship for example. But not good enough for the shakes encountered when walking with the camcorder. Don't expect to get great footage in such conditions. For great footage, you must still rely on a steady hand or a tripod.

7. On-screen zoom and record buttons: Not an useful feature. The camcorder tends to shake more when you use these zoom buttons on the LCD because the LCD is always projecting outside when shooting video. Hence you shake the camcorder more when you touch the LCD than when you touch the camcorder's body.

8. USB 2.0 interface: Good interface. Fast enough to download 30 GB in 1.5 hours. Firewire interface would have been great. But USB 2.0 is also good enough

9. Image Mixer Software: Very useless software. The free Picasa software from Google is far better in organizning your videos and pictures than the software that comes with this camera. Forget about this software.

10. InfoLithium battery with AccuPower meter system: Great battery life. I could shoot for upto 1 hour 20 minutes with one battery. Remember we always don't shoot continously in everyday life. We turn the camcorder on and off repeatedly when shooting. This battery last for 1 hour 20 minutes during normal shooting as explained above. If you shoot continously you may get longer battery life.

11. NOTE: This camcorder does NOT have an Active Interface shoe. Other Sony camcorders do have this feature. This allows you to add other Sony accessories, for example, extra flood light. If you are not planning to add any accessory, then don't worry about the absence of this feature.

12. DVDDirect compatibility: This feature allows you to directly burn your video and photos to DVD. I don't think this is a very useful feature. Its always better to download to computer, and burn only the good files and photos to DVD instead of burning all of them.

Overall summary. Buy this camcorder only if you are not serious about editing the videos. Its a good buy for point-and-shoot-and-view pleasure only. In my opinion, a mini-DV camcorder (DCRHC42 for example) is still a better bet than a DVD or hard drive based model. The only inconvenience in a mini-DV model is that you have to be a bit techy to download video to computer. If you are ok with that, the mini-DV still provides good value for money as its far cheaper than DVD or hard-drive models.

Buy Sony DCR-SR80 60GB 1MP Hard Disk Drive Handycam with 12x Optical Zoom Now

I agree with the previous reviewer. The low light performance of this camera is pretty bad. Deeps reds are more like deep pinks...but other colors are quite natural, though a bit flat.

It is a nice camera otherwise: very compact, HDD makes a world of differenc in ease of use. Handgrip takes some getty used to.

Stills are useless. No built-in flash makes situation even worse.

Would have liked to have component video out so that we can get widescreen output diretly from the camcorder to TV.

I may end up trading this for the big-brother DCR-SR100....

This camera is working out great for me. I love that I can play back movies instantly. The microphone works very well. Better then I expected in fact. I would agree that shooting in low light is not great, but it is adequate. It is also annoying that the image is shot in 16:9, but the LCD is 4:3. When I playback on my 16:9 TV I find that there are things in the shot I didn't see on the viewfinder. That's good actually, because the image on the TV is better than what I thought I was going to get.

Overall I am very happy with this camcorder and would certainly recomend it.

Want Sony DCR-SR80 60GB 1MP Hard Disk Drive Handycam with 12x Optical Zoom Discount?

This Handycam is Great for only one reason the 60gb hard disk. It means never having to worry about tapes or DVD etc. It's small and light.

I returned a Sony DVD handycam which malfunctioned within the first 30 days of receiving it and bought the SR80 instead.

I'll focus on the negatives:

a) VERY POOR low light performance. Shooting indoors is a pain. For example you try to shoot a dance floor in a night club forget this camera can't deliver. I am about to purchase the light attachment hoping to alleviate this problem. The only way to get halfway decent low light shots it to shoot in a party mode where the image loses all sharpness.

b) The original lens that comes with this camera ahs a very narrow focus it's like you have tunnel vision. I bought this in time for my daughter's 6th birthday party and the results were terrible. It was impossible to get a decent shot unless I was at least 10 ft away from the subject and I am talking about trying to get more than one person in the frame. I bought the wide angle lens for about $40 and this has made a lot of difference. The lens however is not sharp when you have zoomed out to the max. I also found that I cannot use the camera in most conditions without the wide angle lens. Why Sony would sell a camera with such a poor lens is beyond me.

c) Sound is OK. It's supposed to be Dolby Surround. It provides only mono sound with the Bluetooth remote sound attachment.

d) Super night shot is useless beyond a few feet. Trying to shoot our Christmas tree was a nightmare. The wide angle lens also blocks the infrared light that is supposed to light up what ever.

e) 1 mp Digital stills: Why do they even have the option? Results are terrible. There a cell phones which shoot better pictures?

Pros:

1) Image stabilization is excellent.

2) I already mentioned the benefit of having the large hard disk.

3) Good battery life.

4) Nice wide LCD makes it easy to operate even for people with big hands.

5) Easy to navigate interface.

6) Hot shoe for external attachments like additional light and Bluetooth microphone device is necessary.

7) Day light shots are great.
